‪Are you in the market for an Ammonite Fossil?‬
‪Welcome to Dan Weinberg's world‬
والآن في 824 West Superior Street ، عند زاوية شارع Superior and Green Street ، غرب شارع Halsted وشارع Chicago.

‪Over the years, my wife and I have purchased new, rare and first-edition books, autographs, original oil paintings and other historical documents and artifacts at Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago. But an Ammonite Fossil? That's a first. "One of the oldest artifacts we've ever handled," Weinberg said. An ancestor of today's nautilus and other mollusks, this long-extinct cephalopod lived in the ocean during thee Jurassic era, about 200 million years ago. The shop was established in 1938 by Ralph Newman, who hoped to serve the passionate collecting needs of a small circle of friends devoted to the study of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. Weinberg entered into a partnership with Newman in 1971, then purchased Newman's interest in 1984 to become the sole proprietor. We met Weinberg at the original book store address on Chestnut Street near State Street in the 1970s, then followed him when he opened a new shop on West Chicago Avenue near Orleans, then again when he moved to his current address at 824 West Superior Street, west of Halsted and Division. It's a must-see for Civil War and Lincoln buffs, a museum where you can purchase a pardon signed by Lincoln and future President Andrew Johnson for $12,500 or a Civil War Ambulance Guidon for $12,500. A collection of eight signed photographs of Lincoln's cabinet recently sold for $115,000. We purchased an original oil painting of the battle of "The West Woods" at Antietam by well known Civil War artist Keith Rocco. The next day, the Mellon Library in Pittsburgh to offer to purchase our painting to pair with Rocco's sister painting of the battle of "The Cornfield" at Antietam. We still have our painting. When you buy something from Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, you don't often part with it.‬

‪Over the years, my wife and I have spent a lot of time and expended a considerable amount of money in purchasing newly published books, rare books, original oil paintings and autographs at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. First, the shop on Chestnut Street east of State Street. Then the shop on West Chicago Avenue, west of Orleans Street. And now at 824 West Superior Street, at the corner of Superior and Green Street, west of the Halsted Street and the Chicago River. We recently made our first visit to the new shop and to renew acquaintances with Dan Weinberg, the book store's long-time proprietor. I must admit the new shop isn't as accessible as the others. But if you're a historian and you are interested in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, this is the place to find it. But that's not all. I'm also interested in World War II, the Old West, biographies of famous people, the history of Hollywood and motion pictures and ancient Roman and Greek history. So what did I find at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop? Signed books by Dwight D. Eisenhower (Crusade in Europe, 1948), Douglas MacArthur (Reminiscences, 1964) and Omar Bradley (A Soldier's Story, 1951). They are a great addition to my collection. A visit to Dan Weinberg's shop is always good for an hour or so of enjoyable conversation, a history lesson or two and some expensive but valuable business transactions. Dan always has something on display that wasn't there the last time you were in the shop. That's the fun of going there. The Abraham Lincoln Book Shop is more of a museum than a book store.‬

‪Have visited this store many times over the years, but hadn't been there for a couple years. Was surprised to find that it had moved from its old location on Chicago Ave about half a mile west to a kind of hard to find location on Superior. After a couple loops around the block, we finally figured out where it was and parked. Upon getting rung in by the sole clerk on duty (everyone else was apparently at a book show or something offsite), the first thing we noticed was that the space was much smaller with much, much less stock on display (it seemed like maybe 1/10th the stock, but we were so shocked that we had a hard time making a dispassionate estimate). Anyway, we looked through what they had and noticed that, while they had a few interesting books, they still weren't giving them away by any means. We also had a hard time finding copies of books in a condition that would justify the prices they were charging. In the end, we picked up three or four books, all current titles - in years passed, we would probably have picked up a dozen or more, including one or two rare books, but alas this store is not what it used to be. Very sad.‬

‪As a Civil War buff, I have purchased dozens of books over the years at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop's three locations--first, the original store on Chestnut Street, then on Chicago Avenue, now at 824 West Superior Street, about five block west of the Chicago Avenue address, at the corner of Superior and Green. Proprietor Dan Weinberg and his staff have more space to showcase one of the most comprehensive collections of Civil War-related books in the country. But Weinberg's pride and joy is much more than a book store. It is a museum of autographs, original oil paintings, photographs, rare books, ephemera, documents, even statuary. Weinberg once displayed a rare copy of General Robert E. Lee's Order No. 9, his farewell address to his troops at Appomattox, worth at the time over $100,000. Over the years, my wife and I have purchased several historical items from Weinberg. Perhaps the most valuable is a first-edition, two-volume copy of Harriett Beecher Stowe's classic Uncle Tom's Cabin, with a handwritten letter by Stowe. Not to mention dozens of first-edition books, including Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's personal copy of the Rev. Theodore Gerrish's Reminiscences of the Civil War. And a statue of Lincoln by a 14-year-old sculptor. And five original oil paintings by Keith Rocco. And a copy of Custer's farewell to his troops. And autographs of every major figure of the Civil War. Most of them were purchased at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. For a Civil War historian, a trip to Weinberg's shop is like visiting Little Round Top or the McLean House or walking from Seminary Ridge to the Angle on Cemetery Ridge, the site of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg.‬

‪On our travels, my wife and I love to visit book stores, especially independent shops like Haslam's in St. Petersburg, Florida, or Parker's in Sarasota, Florida, or Bookery Limited in Lexington, Virginia. We love searching for rare books. Most of all, however, we are Civil War buffs and there isn't a bookstore in the country that boasts a more complete collection of Civil War books and Abraham Lincoln books is Dan Weinberg's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago. It is the next best thing to a museum with considerable Civil War paintings and memorabilia on display. Over the years, we have purchased several first-edition and rare books and original Keith Rocco paintings and other historic artifacts and autographs from Weinberg. If there is a significant Civil War autograph that we don't have, I don't know who it is--and most of them came via Weinberg. Established in 1938 by Ralph Newman, the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop serves the needs of collectors and scholars, professional historians and independent writers, dedicated first-edition hunters and casual history enthusiasts. Newman founded the shop in part to serve the passionate collecting needs of a small circle of friends devoted to the study of the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. They include poet Carl Sandburg and author Bruce Catton. In 1971, Weinberg entered into a partnership with Newman. In 1984, he purchased Newman's interest to become sole proprietor and moved the store from its original Chestnut Street address to new digs on Chicago Avenue. Weinberg and his assistants, Tom Trescott and Bjorn Skaptason, are Civil War experts. But its specialty is Lincoln and Weinberg has PhD-like knowledge on the subject. Books range from the very expensive, out-of-print, first-editions to the very latest titles and most recently published material. From time to time, Weinberg publishes a catalog that details all of the signed new books and historical memorabilia (pictures, books, autographs, letters) that can be obtained at his bookstore. How about an autographed picture of Lincoln for $9,500? Or another one for $8,500? Or an autographed manuscript note by Lincoln for $10,500? Or a history of Lincoln by his personal secretaries, John Nicolay and John Hay, for $4,500? You also can purchase a book on the lives of Nicolay and Hay for $29.95. It's all about what you are looking for an you can find it somewhere at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop.‬

‪After you unpack or park your car, walk 9 blocks west on Chicago Street to "The Abe". You will see the greatest collection of books and friendliest people at any bookstore you have visited. Tom and Bjorn are Civil War experts and Daniel is PhD smart on Lincoln. I was looking for a book on a small lndiana regiment, which Amazon did not have and there it was! You can sit and read, or look over the vast collection of Lincoln and Civil War related books. Every so often an author is there signing her or his books. Tip: ship your selections and save the huge Chicago sales tax. After spending an hour there, go to the Chicago Historical Museum and see the deathbed of Lincoln from the Peterson House....or shop the Mag Mile. You will love this bookstore gem.‬

‪This is without a doubt my favorite bookstore! Anyone with any interest in mid-19th century America needs to visit this shop. Besides books on Lincoln and the Civil War, the shop also specializes in the American Presidency. Books range from the very expensive, out-of-print, 1st editions, to the very latest titles. In addition to books, there are also certified autographs of our nations leaders. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, patiently answering questions ranging from schoolchildren working on assignments, to scholars gathering materials for a new book. Truly a unique shopping experience, and one I highly recommend.‬
