If you do nothing else in Chicago go to the Neo-Futurists. A laugh out loud highlight collection of 30 acts in 60 minutes with contemplative, weird, ridiculous, sweet, and moody pieces. Bring your shouting voice! Dynamic and interactive, I went every year for four years in a row, that's how much I love them! Plus if you are feeling risky, you can wait in line for a token and call upon lady luck when you roll dice for your final ticket price. Never a dull moment and tiny pizza slices in celebration if they complete all 30!

i have seen this show twice and loved it each time. The plays are different each time so you can go see this show every month! Some plays are funny, some are poignant, all are amazing. The cast are incredibly creative and talented. Please go see this show!

So very very glad I went here on my visit to Chicago. A tiny very cool venue with wonderfully outlandish structured improvised avant-garde (for lack of a better word) theater. So entertaining risky and daring and most of all fun. Go!!!!!

We spent 4 days in Chicago and did all the major museums. Probably too much for our 8 year old. This was the highlight of the trip. I didn't know what to expect from "That's Weird Grandma" and I'm still not sure what to think about except it was awesome. Kids loved it. It was almost surreal, but in a good way. I highly recommend this show.

Wife and I took our 9 year old and 11 year old to see "that's weird grandma" and it was a great night of theatre.
All the stories are written by children from CPS schools and the troupe turns them in to imaginative, fun, entertaining skits. Lots of singing, quirky musical instrument, and costumes. Lots of genuine laughing and just pure entertainment.
I highly recommend this for your family. Try something different that supports a good cause.
We will be back !

The Neo-Futurist group of writers, actors, etc has been putting on their "30 Plays in 60 Minutes" since 1988. Every week, for most of the year, they put in new plays in the line-up of 30, based on the roll of two dice by audience members, so can be 2-12 new plays each week. December they typically do "best of" from the hundreds done that year. The plays are written by the cast and must be based on something real/in their life (the young adult daughter of friends took their classes, they and she were so impressed). I've mostly been awed and laughed but sometimes I've been moved to tears... all of it done quickly because gotta get those 30 in.
You're handed a numbered list of the titles of the plays when you go in. Numbers are hanging from the ceiling. At the end of each play, the audience shouts out a number, a cast member jumps up to grab the number, see what the play title is, they quickly hustle to get props together, then do the play. A clock is ticking down the minutes and the plays stop at 60 minutes, whether all 30 were gotten in or not. The plays are short and maybe I won't intensely like every single one of them, but, hey, any particular play is soon over and onto the next play. I've liked so very many of the plays and the experience overall that I've been many dozens of times. Warning: there may be profanity or whatever necessary for the play but those things are not the purpose of the play, just incidental to it.
If they "sell out", they "order out", meaning that if the house is full, then before the start of the plays, the audience shouts their pizza order into the held-up phone, and at the end of the plays the one delivered pizza is cut up and the audience can grab the pieces of whatever the order taker heard at the other end. Nowadays, it's so popular that they sell tickets ahead on line and often are sold-out and the line can get long waiting at the door, people hoping to get tickets at that show. 1130 pm shows Friday and Saturday are a bit late for some people, but a good way to quality end the evening for some others. Sunday 7pm is more available for some and sometimes not as readily sold out.

These performers, can manage 30 plays in 60 minutes if you are speedy and clever. I took my super conservative friend and she was delighted by the crazy endless fun!

Assuming you can get up the very steep stairs to the second floor above the funeral parlor, you are in for a treat. Innovative company with remarkable players, I have never seen a bad show and you may think it is going to be funny, but I have often left in tears. Their Burning Bluebeard deserved a Pulitzer. They believe in audience participation, so make eye-contact if you dare, and you may find yourself on-stage. The audience sits on one side of a room, and the other side is the stage (usually bare or with minimal sets, as you have to walk through the state area). Absolutely first rate in all aspects. Not for young children and no wheelchair accessibility.

This theater is located in the Andersonville (swedish) neighborhood of Chicago.
- Street parking is a must or uber
- We purchase tickets prior to the show on the very convenient web but you can "roll the dice" and purchase them same day (you are taking your chances that they may fill up
- There is swearing and it is a little off center so if you aren't ok with that then this might not be the show for you
- I recommend going in parties of six or less... yes this would make a perfect first date
- Have cash, cash is king, cards aren't accepted.
- If you have a disability of any kind call the theater ahead to see if this is easy to accomodate - there are a lot of stairs so know that and plan for it.
