‪The Visitor's center is even more important than the climb up the mounds. The dioramas and explanations are first class. The whole history you learn is eye-opening, to say the least. A major metropolis of it's day and we all managed to know so little about it until we visited.‬

‪We got there in time for the 10 A.M. tour, which was great. Afterwards, we "did" the Museum and some more of the grounds. The Museum is World Class. The exhibits are outstanding. And, of course, we drove over to Monks Mound and walked up. A great view, and if you have a good imagination, you can look out and around and "see" a community of 15,000+ people.‬

‪Make your way to the preserved grounds of Cahokia Mounds. The grounds and the museum are great! Donation admission appreciated. The gift shop was very nice with gorgeous jewelry, many book selections, and usual shop clothing and children's items.‬

‪Cahokia is a gem. If you love history, anthropology archeology, learning about indigenous people, then this is the place for you. As a fulltime digital nomad, I tend to wander about aimlessly. I had never even heard about Cahokia Mounds until seeing a brown sign for it on the highway. I never know what to expect with these kinds of places I was so pleasantly surprised. This place is world class. The museum was big and throrough. It addressed pretty much all aspects of life of the ancient people who lived in this area and made the mounds. The grounds are very well maintained and the trails are wonderful. The staff knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The jewel of the park is Monk's mound and walking up the stairs to the top. You can see St Louis from the top. I also liked Wood Henge. I was sorry I didn't allocate more time to visit there. I didn't get to walk alot of the trails. If you plan to go there and you are a plaque reader you will need a minimum of a half day and could easily take up a whole day. I will definitely be back. I highly recommend it.

‪Not just a state historic site, but a world heritage site as well. The history here may change your perspective on Native American society. The level of sophistication and expanse of this site, even as an archeological site is impressive. The museum is very well done and sets the stage for a walk to see the mounds. So many mounds and trails for walkers of all levels.‬

‪Amazing History here. Museum is really nice. Self guided, but they have different programs and guides available too. Free museum, but appreciate donations. Worth the stop. Of you can manage steps, climb the Monk Mound for a view of St Louis. You'll see the Arch in the distance too.‬

‪We did about a 3 mile walk around the grounds, which were primarily flat. Lots of shade on the trail. It was great for watching deer graze in the sparsely wooded areas. We went 9/11/21. Local firefighters were there walking the step in honor of those firefighters lost on 9/22/01. That made our visit even more memorable. We had a few preteen girls with us. They enjoy trying on the firefighter gear, the walk , climbing the stairs up the mound and the museum.
Best of all everything is free.
On the way out I noticed there was an older group of adults, with archery set up. I did see a few covered picnic tables. Depending on where you are coming from, you drive through an area that's not the most attractive. I was very easy to get to from I-255.‬

‪Expansive remnants of pre-European America city. Cahokia was larger than London at the time, and the largest native city north of Mexico. Unknown to most Americans, this remarkable civilization built mounds rivaling the Aztec and Maya creations further south. The site seeks to preserve historic treasures and educate people about the lives and knowledge of this impressive Mississippian people. Featuring Moncks Mound, and over 80 remaining smaller mounds, the park also offers an impressive interpretive center that depicts daily life for a remarkable people.

All this, and it's free! Donations are encouraged.‬

‪I was surprised by the high value of the museum. It is one of the museums with a lot of exhibits, prepared very well for a non-expert audience. You can see, hear, and touch, so you don't just have to read a lot and be an expert in the material to enjoy it. They also show a well made move as an introduction (about 15min). I would highly recommend for anyone coming near, even if you didn't hear so much about native American history as was the case for me. The outside area is pretty big. You can walk up the big mound, a nice experience. However, the biggest downside is that modern civilization is within the historic site. There seems to be a private house on the historic site, a big street separates the museum and the big mound, and some dealership is right next to the sun clock. I think America can do better than that for what seems to be a very important historic site.‬
