My wife and I have toured the Washburne House State Historic Site on two occasions. It is one of the most interesting homes in Galena, Illinois, along with Ulysses S. Grant's house and the Belvedere Mansion. Located at 908 3rd Street, off Route 20, steps from the bridge that spans the Galena River and the entrance to downtown Galena, it was the home of Elihu Benjamin Washburne, a prominent Galena lawyer who served in the U.S. Congress during the Civil War and was U.S. Secretary of State and Minister to France under President Ulysses S. Grant. Washburne was close friends with Grant, another famous resident of Galena, and Abraham Lincoln. It was in the parlor of the Washburne house that Grant came on the night of the 1868 presidential election to learn that he had been elected. Constructed in 1844-1845, the 1 1/2-story building was built in the Greek Revival style and features a two-story porch with four fluted Doric columns. The guided tour includes the first floor and two second-floor bedrooms. The house is furnished to reflect the mid-19th century life of a well-to-do midwestern professional. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the house is open to the public from 1 to 4 on Friday and 10 to 1 on Saturday. Strange house, perhaps. But it is worth the slight annoyance. Just to stand in the room where Grant sat and learned he had been elected president is a thrilling experience.

Would have loved to tour this, but it was closed. Great looking home. We saw it on our trolley tour & came back for better photos. I knew this one was closed before we came .

The tour was my favorite of the weekend! I learned so much about the relationship between Washburne, Grant and Lincoln. I found the paintings in this house to be very historical and the guides gave a wonderful presentation. Tour time is very limited so plan accordingly to you don't miss it. (just two houses down from the Aldrich Guest House).

We really enjoyed our tour at the Washburne House. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and she kept it short and sweet. Highly recommend!

Guided tour lasts about 35 minutes. The house is well preserved and the docent was knowledgeable and engaging. The Washburne family were very involved in US history. Stop by to learn about them and their connections to Presidents Lincoln and Grant. They do not charge a fee but accept donations.

I have been to Galena many times but, I hadn't know about this historic home until this visit. Mr Washburne had a significant impact on our country and two presidents. The tour is worth it just, to get a glimpse into his life and family. Docents are all volunteers. They are friendly and knowledgeable.

The first thing you have to know about Elihu Washburne is he probably was the most important and most influential politician you never heard about. He was a close friend and ally of Abraham Lincoln and he was a close friend and ally of Ulysses S. Grant. He helped to put Grant in the White House. In fact, Grant was sitting in a reclining chair next to the fireplace in the parlor of Washburne's house when, via a telegraph that Washburne had connected to his home, Grant learned that he had been elected the 18th President of the United States in 1868. So visiting the Washburne house in Galena, Illinois, is a priority. The two-story, Greek Revival house, located at the corner of Third Street at U.S. Route 20, was built in 1844 and enlarged to its current size in 1860. In the mid-1950s, Washburne helped to form the Republican Party. He was a political advisor to Lincoln and Grant. He was appointed Secretary of State by Grant, then was appointed Ambassador to France. Later, he was president of the Chicago Historical Society. Karen gave us a thoroughly enchanting and very informative tour of the house, pointing out the painting of Washburne greeting Lincoln at the train station in Washington, D.C., upon Lincoln's arrival to begin his Presidency. And a painting with Washburne observing as Lincoln appoints Grant as Lieutenant General in charge of the Army of the Potomac and all other Union armies in 1864. Much of the furniture in the house has been reproduced but the sofa in the living room is original.

The Washburne’s were very helpful to Ulysses S. Grant & President Lincoln during the Civil War.
The home looked very original & the Volunteer Tour Guide was very informative about the family & their connections to the Galena community - they also started Gold Metal Flour (which was manufactured in the Twin Cities,Mn.)
