‪Spring Strolling‬
فبراير 2021
‪can't believe that we have lived in the north shore for over 20 years and we had never been here! What a gem!

We came here with our son and future daughter-in-law for walk on a very cool, very early spring day. Parking was a bit difficult as they had a maple syrup tapping event going on and they closed off parking spots in order to keep the number of people there at time low, due to the pandemic.

They have a number of paths through the woods to walk. None of them are particularly long and definitely not arduous. It was very pleasant strolling along and chatting.

We ran into one of people that works there and he was very willing to answer our questions and pointed us in the direction of the newly tapped trees. There is a small section were they have some of the local fauna on display. We enjoyed our meander through there too.

Great place for young and old alike!‬

‪My granddaughter and I were done with remote learning for the day and needed an excursion. I knew of River Trail Nature Center as I had been there years before when my own kids were little. I knew the indoors would be closed, but remembered the outside cages. We saw a bald eagle, coyote, owl and hawk. We also saw tons of birds and squirrels around the bird feeders. She was very excited to see these animals up close. After looking at all the animals, we walked down by the river and saw Canada geese in the distance. We threw snowballs into the river and watched them float downstream. Ryan, who was working there that day, was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. My granddaughter was excited to get a brown bag with little goodies in it along with a calendar. The visit made a gloomy day very pleasant. We'll certainly make the trip again. Thank you Cook County Forest Preserve.‬

‪renew, relax, restore, refresh, and rejuvenate‬
ديسمبر 2020
‪The Center will be closed from 2:00 p.m. December 31 and all New Year's Day.

The logs are gone, but the center parking spaces in the lot are still blocked off to prevent overcrowding.

The Cook County Forest Preserves encourages you to renew and rejuvenate this winter and one tool they offer is the forest therapy walk. This is based on a Japanese outdoor wellness practice called "shinrin-yoku" -- which translates as "to bathe in the atmosphere of forest" -- and provides stress relief and relaxation. You can find a link to this valuable practice -- of expanding your connection to nature through your senses -- on the River Trail facebook page.

On my most recent visit (December 27), I saw solo kayaks and their paddlers serenely floating down the Des Plaines River; a family admiring the chimney swift nesting tower; and several children jumping on frozen river overflow trying to break the ice whilst their parents watched. The kids were certainly connecting with nature, but I'm not sure how relaxing that was for their parents.

As the pandemic continues, we are all so VERY grateful for the physical and meditative oppotunities provided by this and other preserves.

See my earlier reviews (September 7, 2020; April 3, 2020; July 30, 2018; January 1, 2014) for more details.‬

‪"People, not dogs. Adventures, not picnics. Hiking, not biking."‬
سبتمبر 2020
‪See my earlier reviews (January 1, 2014, July 30, 2018 and April 13, 2020) for more details.

The Center grounds and bathrooms are now open daily, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The buildings are still closed.

The parking spaces in the center of the lot have been blocked off by large tree trunks, rolled into place, to limit capacity to 50% percent.

The short and shaded trails are lovely.
There are several benches that were built and installed as Eagle Scout projects. You may pass the deer enclosure, which was set up in 1983 to show the damage done by deer overpopulation and grazing. The protected ground cover inside the enclosure is verdant and healthy. Directly outside, the vegetation is sparse. The contrast is dramatic.

Feeding time for the display animals is daily at 3:00 p. m.
If you come on a Saturday or Sunday, an on-site educator will provide an entertaining and informational introduction to all of them -- the Swainson Hawk, the Bald Eagle, the two Great Horned Owls, the Red-Tailed Hawk, the coyote, and the Barred Owl. (The skunk I mentioned in an earlier review has since died of congestive heart failure.)
The program is called "What's on the Menu," and the answer is mice, rats, and quail.
All the creatures are here because they have some sort of injury that prevents them from surviving in the wild. They have become "educational ambassadors".

I have literally been coming to Nature Center for decades and am very grateful for this free, year-round facility.‬

‪closed until May 11‬
مارس 2020
‪Buildings, bathrooms (indoor and portable), grounds, and trails are currently closed. They hope to reopen May 11, but it will be best to check the Cook County Forest Preserves website before coming out.

Don't be misled by any activity you may see -- employees come daily to care for the animals, but the Center is totally closed to the public.

See my July 30, 2018 review for details about this attraction.‬

‪Great to teach kids about local animals.‬
ديسمبر 2019
‪They have a large interactive center where young can touch things and a small outdoor zoo with local animals you can get close to. There are also numerous events that are fun to attend. Maple syrup festival (they tap their own trees and serve pancakes) Honey festival (they have active bee hives) and other things as well. If you have kids ya gotta go.‬

‪This has been a go to learn about local nature for our family for over 30 years. Set in a Forest Preserve in the Northern Suburbs, it makes you feel like you are out in the country. The have local Wild animals and birds that you can see and learn about. Their programs for kids are great.‬

‪Great for getting away from it all‬
زوجان • نوفمبر 2018
‪I first found this place 30 years ago when I was freshly out of a university in my first job. It was a great place to just commune with nature right outside of the 3rd largest metro area in the U.S. Fast forward to 2018 - it still is - it is even better.

There is a nature center with 2 good-sized rooms inside. One room has a variety of birds, reptiles, and amphibians local to the area. The other room has a kids play area with games, stuff to climb on, and room to run around.

Outside, there are a number of cages currently sporting a hawk, a couple of owls, and a coyote. Next to that is a colony of bees. There's also a "natural" playground for the little ones.

Then there are a couple of trails - each about 1/2 mile long with interpretive markers (you need the guide sheet to know what A or C means). You can also walk along the Des Plaines River. Finally there's a long trail for joggers that continues several miles in each direction. I've jogged it - you can go south with only crossing one major road for about 2.5 miles.

There are often activities for kids. The people working there teach fun facts.

Or.... you can just find a bench and zone out....‬
