‪Nice large campsites. Very quiet even on a 3 day weekend. Park employees are very friendly and helpful. It is one of our favorite parks.‬

‪Holy no info batman.

After passing the campground because of crappy signage, we made a non enjoyable couple mile trip down a single lane switch back filled route to nowhere.
With multiple campers in our group, this was horrendous for the 30 plus foot 5th wheels. Signage is lacking
Sites are crappy, nothing close to level, and the entry to back into them is cramped at best. Even with just a 29' bumper pull.
Out tongue is 3.5 feet from the ground to find "level" ‬

‪We went here to do some hiking. If you arrive before the opening time (10am in our case) you don't have to pay the entrance fee. Very good signage that all looked freshly painted. The trails we hiked were in good condition. Only down side was a bull in the enclosure at the Nature Center was covered with crap and he had to stand in it.‬

‪Not sure what happen to us this weekend but we've stayed here for 20 years even back when it was called Wyndotte. Any DNR Ranger showed up at our campsite banging on camper demanding receipt for stay. We had our blue DNR rage that the reception lady gave us properly displayed. Ranger was driver a black jeep but his uniform half tucked in not pressed no name tag and he had a long black beard. We tried to produce receipt rapidly but only found previous stays. We felt pressured Wife ride to guard shack to get duplicate since ranger would not use his radio to verify. We was moved from Camp #35 to Camp #33 because tree was low. After setting up yet again and after picking trash up on trails and riding the full Fireman Loop and Rocky Ridge Trails again volunteering to clean up we settled in for a nap. Then "Boom Boom Boom" on side of camper, It is Blackbeard DNR Ranger demanding receipt. We packed up and we asked the lady at the guard shack to refund us she radioed him or called him (previously he said he could not call her) she came out and met "Ranger Blackbeard" (He refused his name) This time Grandkids (first trip camping for them) was crying and my wife who is a Licensed Nurse was furious demanded what the communication malfunction was between the lady who took our money and Ranger "Blackbeard". I remained professional the whole time (yes sir no sir etc). Ranger Blackbeard kept a giant but fake smile. Bottom line we paid (didn't have to had volunteer credentials but I never untilizd the free stays) We paid, The reception lady at check in issued us the blue cards with Campsite #, our name, and our departure date in plain Black Permanant marker yet Ranger Blackbeard kept applying pressure what seemed like for us to leave. My Buddy, a physician said that this Indiana park has been anti Kentucky lately not sure. But I am ending my 20 years of trail cleaning with the DNR. There needs to be better communication between payment check in people and the Rangers. Ranger Blackbeard seemed deeply intent on trying to make us feel like thieves and we was extremely embarrassed in front of the grandkids. All of this for properly following where we was assigned to camp and paying full price to help support DNR when I had several discounts (Vet, USGS, Senior) discounts available to me. Will be my last visit to Obannon. Trails are seriously in need of repair but I can see why now.‬

‪This was our 4th annual backpacking trip on the AHT. Last fall the bike club had cleared the trails for their November event, so the trails were awesome in September! No problem with ticks This June the trails were back to being overgrown and tick-infested. We saw three species, mostly Lone Stars. Permethrin kept them off our clothes, but the dog came home with several, even after being treated before and after the hike with tick shampoo.

The hike is physically challenging, hot and humid. We stashed water in two places even though there are two ponds off the trail. Creek beds were dry, trails muddy in a few spots. Between the two of us and a dog, we drank 6 gallons, using some for dinner prep.

Looked for the Old Barn, but found out afterward it had been dismantled. There are only a few places along that side of the park to camp off the trail. Signs were placed along the bluff that say no camping so we will have to find a new site for our second night. First night was near the Chimney Shelter area.

We were hiking 2 1/2 days and saw no one else on the trail, there was one person checked in when we checked out. Looking forward to returning this fall after the bike club volunteers clear the trail again so we don't have to deal with the ticks.

We paid $9 to park in the campground parking lot, but if we had gotten there before 9 am, we were told we would not be charged the day fee.‬

‪The map was terrible in helping us find the trail we wanted to hike. And once we found the trail, we got lost for several hours due to poor signage telling us where to go. We tried to call the DNR but didn't have enough cell phone signal.‬

‪We enjoyed walking the dry creek beds, the Ohio River overlooks and the donkeys/bulls. Not many camping yet, but nice campground. Few restrooms were open, none of the 'flushers' were open that we found, only pits, but the season is early. Beautiful park, will visit again. Friendly gate personnel.‬

‪We wanted to make a brief visit to O'Bannon State Park to check out the RV campground for a future visit. They wanted to charge us $9 at the gate just to drive in and drive right back out again. Needless to say, we made a u-turn and left.

I guess we'll never know anything about the park. $9 for a quick in and out just because we're not an Indiana resident is excessive. Hoosiers, please come and visit our Kentucky State Parks. You'll be made to feel welcome and there will be no extra charge just because you're "outsiders".

I really hope that Indiana DNR would review this policy of extra charge for out of state visitors. It really makes us feel unwelcome. Or, is that the point?‬

‪We enjoyed our time at this park. The picnic area near the River was nice. We hiked the cliff dweller trail and enjoyed the dry creek bed, the cliffs and a brief area by a stream. The trail was well marked and maintained. Most of the restroom facilities are pit pots but there is a facility with modern conveniences near the fire tower. My kids especially enjoyed the trek up the fire tower. Nature center currently only open with reduced hours on weekends.‬

‪Charged 7 dollars at booth for my 1/2 ton pickup pulling 20 ft trailer. No mention on website of this charge. Bathroom showers in total disrepair. Knobs missing. Many sites too far from water to hook up. Most sites are angled when they could have been laid level. Never again.‬
