‪very beautiful building as long as the business you are there for doesn't ruin the mood. The ground surrounding the building is well kept also.‬

‪Several years ago, we toured all of the county seats in Indiana and looked at their courthouses and visited their county museums. We thought the Johnson County courthouse's exterior was particularly fine, and a recent drive through Franklin reinforced this opinion. This very symmetric red brick structure combines elements of several different architectural styles (Second Empire, Neo-Jacobean, and Romanesque Revival) with some nice accents and a visually appealing roof line accented by central clock tower and four corner towers, all topped with pyramidal roofs. It is one of seven courthouses in the state designed by George W. Bunting, an Indianapolis architect who also designed several buildings on the Indiana University campus.

The courthouse grounds also has an interesting turn-of-the-century (20th that is) memorial to the county's Civil War veterans. Donated by local businessman John Terrell Vawter, the base is a fountain with a central pedestal topped with a striking sculpture of a dismounted cavalry soldier. The statue's sculptor was Rudolph Schwartz who came to Indiana to work on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis and remained after its completion sculpting monuments such as this one. The eagle-eyed observer may note that the lion's heads whose mouths feed the fountain at the monument's base are very similar to those seen at its much larger cousin in Indianapolis. There are three other monuments on the courthouse grounds honoring the area's veterans from various wars - the Spanish-American War memorial is particularly interesting being based on a large natural boulder.

The interior of the courthouse is marked by a rather ornate and fairly complex wooden staircase that rises up through the central tower. There are some modest plaster ornamentation on the walls and ceiling which have been nicely highlighted by careful multicolor highlights. Sadly the rectangular tower is much more confined that a dome structure would be and doesn't lend itself to level of artistic expression seen in some of the other courthouses around the state. Sadly other parts of the courthouse interior, e.g., some of the courtrooms, have suffered from utilitarian remodels with drop ceilings, commercial carpeting, etc.‬

‪The building is well preserved and undergoing further remodelling this year. A must-see for fans of 19th Century Architecture. The woodwork, staircases and tile floor are great!‬
