I came here JUST for the outdoor spaces. Spring has sprung and nature is showing off her bounty! I was incredibly enchanted meandering the gardens... the grounds are BEAUTIFUL and very well kept. Put on a good pair of walking shoes and enjoy all it has to offer. And when you get hungry, there's a cafe to eat at and a gift shop to explore after!

We are from Chicago which is home to spectacular museums, and our family loved the Indianapolis museum. It had a large variety of art, indoors and it had beautiful gardens and sculptures on the grounds of the museum. Highly recommend you put this on the top of your list if you’re visiting Indianapolis.

The art museum is now referred to as Newfields which includes the Lily House and gardens. Of course now they have The Lume which currently features the Van Gogh immersion event. This was the event we paid to see. This is on the fourth floor and includes several rooms that project images of Van Gogh’s stunning work in a loop. We were here for an hour absorbing the beautiful images on the walls and on the floor. It’s $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers plus a small handling fee. We felt it was a good value in itself but this also includes the permanent art collection plus the Lily House and gardens. Since it was cold and rainy we skipped the Lily House and gardens(seen it several years ago) but enjoyed the permanent exhibits. When you consider other cities are charging more for this event alone you can appreciate the real value of seeing the permanent art collection along with the Van Gogh immersion event. I do have one bone to pick. As we were the first ones to see this when the museum opened at 11:00 am on a cold and rainy day the staff left us out in the cold and pouring rain until exactly 11:00 am. I guess rules are rules as one person said waiting in the rain with my wife and I. Still I can’t see why they couldn’t at least allow us in the lobby to keep us from getting drenched. Considering there were a number of senior citizens(I among them I must confess) stuck in the cold and pouring rain I felt that was rather unfeeling. Others with me thought the same. Once admitted inside those of us who had tickets to The Lume were instructed to proceed to the fourth floor, however, once we reached the second floor by escalator a staff member demanded to know if we checked in downstairs first. The woman in front of us could barely disguise her frustration and anger when she had to explain we were instructed to go directly to the fourth floor. The Van Gogh immersion event and the price was well worth it. We can’t say the same for some of the staff. We have memberships to other art museums that treat us well.

They have one of the best Hoppers and a stunning Renoir. Reason enough to go. Expensive entry though. But it includes Lilly House and the gardens

The LUME was worth the cost of admission. Eat before you go. Cafeteria food is very expensive. We tried to find a restaurant close by couldn't find any, not even fast food. :(

Rude, obnoxious and stuffy folks at the door. The greeter reminded me of the snobby (whites only) country clubs of the 50’s America. Our group got a 10 minute lecture about preregistering for tickets since clearly people who show up are “not worthy” of entry. We left and spent our time elsewhere. A ROTTEN EXPERIENCE!

Please Note: This museum now is called Newfields. We went to the museum on the third day of the new Van Gogh exhibition, called Lume. While many art purists are sure to be offended by the exhibit, it could only be called Outstanding. We have been to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, so we did not expect to actually see a great many paintings by the master, but the exhibit uses all the latest media tricks to show Van Gogh as his best and put his life in context. Heartily recommended for everyone--of all ages!

Spent several pleasant hours touring the galleries and gardens and didn't even see half of what's there. We ate lunch in the museum cafe where the food was very good and the view of the gardens beautiful.

The museum is in a gorgeous building...not a huge collection but well-curated exhibits covering a wide range of areas. The gift shop is exceptionally good! Definitely worth a visit for an art lover.

Beautiful gardens, great for pictures and nice art museum. Food was excellent too! My kids would recommend the pretzel in the beer garden.

I believe so, but it would be wise to call Newfields (their new name) just to be sure.

The one thing I add is how we felt last summer. Wow, steep admission price, I remember feeling. Totally different sense at the end. Because there is so much to do -- many kinds of gardens, the Lilly house, etc. We were there about six hours, constantly shifting activities. Six hours for $18 is not terrible.

Are there places to stop for short term parking around The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park? I'll have 2 small kids with me and don't think they'll be up to walking to each stop with the amount of distance between them.

Hey there~The art park you are talking about is behind the IMA. I accessed it from an exit off of 38th Street. It's right at the exit and so is a parking lot. At that lot you are right there, a few feet and you are down in the park. There are some benches, not a lot, along the paths--one path is sort of to the right, another to the left. I bet your kids could get to 3 or 4 sculptures before you head back to the parking lot. The path to the left might be best--that's where the huge skeleton sculpture is which is great for kids to walk on. But there are no parking lots in the park itself. Enjoy!

We had planned on taking family pictures at the 100 acre woods on Sunday, but weather says thunderstorms likely. Would we be able to take pictures inside the museum if it is raining?

The Penrod festival would be ideal....my other favorite for local artist is the Broad Ripple Art festival and Talbot Street Fair. Both are very well attended try it again this year.
