First visiting the old Gladstone Goal about 25 years ago. It has not changed but a revisit is always good to bring to the forefront the history we have forgotten. This is a reminder that it took along time for prisons to catch up to modern society norms.

Our experience with Gladstone Gaol, like most in history, wasn't pleasant. On the day we went, something was a-miss and the volunteers weren't there. Local tuck-shop staff suggested that perhaps one of them may have been unwell.
Where others tried to break out, we contemplated breaking in.
It looked like a very well kept Gaol with multiple walls and roofing still visible from the street. We will be returning to visit it again one day as from outside it appeared very interesting indeed.

Really enjoyed seeing the gaol mostly in its original state. Very friendly staff.

Great place to visit or even stay the night (if you dare). The new curators are lovely. So much history.

As a family, we like to visit historical places around the country. We've been to a few old gaols and have learned about it's history and the people that worked there or those who were incarcerated there.
Whoever is currently managing or running this old gaol seems to have gone away from it's history and has turned it into some sort of Halloween shop. There are tacky kitschy figures and decorations around the place.
There are printed signed all over the place stating 'don't do this' or 'don't do that', children to be supervised, no drinks, no food, don't sit here, don't sit there. Yes, I get that some people need a reminder but these signs are everywhere you turn.
The cells are full of beds or bunk beds for large groups. There is no set up as to how a prisoner's cell might have looked like.
The current managers seems to have forgot to add the historical information and information about what the buildings were used for.
One positive thing was there were 2 cute little goats in one of the back yards that would run back and forth to the fence.
I wouldn't really recommend visiting here until they get back to the history of the place and move away the Halloween theme.

We did our own tour around the gaol and found it very interesting. It is in really nice condition and you can easily spend a couple of hours here. Value for money was great too.

It was a fantastic experience and well worth the stay. We got scared at night sleeping in the cells so we moved out into the hall way to sleep. Luckily no one got possessed.

A group of about 25 of us stayed overnight and had an absolute ball. We stayed in A Block which we were told was the women's section. We slept 2 to a cell and took our own sleeping bags. The beds were really uncomfortable, just a base and thin mattress but what can you expect for $20 a night in an old gaol right? We rode up from Adelaide on our motorbikes which were all stored in a big garage and we shopped at the local IGA for all our food for dinner and breakfast which we cooked on the BBQ however there's a full size community kitchen/dining room for you to use. Unfortunately, we weren't able to use the showers/bathroom as some major water damage had been found the week prior affecting the floor which was to be repaired the following week. Altho they were not willing to give us a discount, they did provide free gas for the BBQ as well as firewood for us to make a fire. The guided tour was very interesting but not really worth $20, however it's something you'd do once. I didn't see or feel any ghosts but acording to my "cell mate" apparently I was giggling in my sleep that night so....hmmm.

Excellent value for money. I think possibly some of the sections were not opened up, but this is partly my fault for not asking. Staff were informative and friendly. Public toilets were very clean and tidy. We did find some of the art/decorations a little odd for a historic site. Definitely worth stopping in for a visit if you are in the vicinity.
