‪A fun quaint museum‬
زوجان • يوليو 2021
‪The museum can be a quick tour or last a bit. There is a lot of memorabilia within its confines. The staff on hand was very knowledgeable about the light house and other events of the era. The Lincoln funeral train stopped right across the street. The town came together to build a temporary gazebo and served snacks and drinks. Definitely worth a stop.‬

‪Nice Lighthouse and Museum‬
سبتمبر 2019
‪This I a nice lighthouse now a museum. Parking is easy and the admission is nominal. We had a limited time so we toured only the first floor, which was mostly lighthouse related and Lake Michigan exhibits including the usual Fresnel lenses that every lighthouse museum has and a nice section on shipwrecks. The docents inside were friendly and had lots of knowledge to impart. There was also the prerequisite gift shop. Wished we had time to see the local history exhibits upstairs.‬

‪Local and Great Lakes history in Indiana's oldest remaining lighthouse‬
أكتوبر 2019
‪Visited this interesting little museum several years ago when we last were in Michigan City and found it very interesting, so decided to drop by again on this visit. Built in 1858, the museum building is itself an historic landmark, the oldest surviving lighthouse in the state (although it stopped serving as a lighthouse in 1904 when the East Light at the end of the pier here became operational), and while the building may be small, there are plenty of interesting artifacts on display in its various rooms.

The first floor is devoted mainly to the region's nautical history. There are exhibits on Lake Michigan shipwrecks, including the infamous Eastland Disaster, as well a number of ship models and artifacts from various other ships that plied the lakes over the last couple hundred years. There naturally are also exhibits on lighthouses, including examples of the Fresnel lenses used to project their light over large distances, and on the people who "manned" them, including Harriet Colfax who served as the keeper here from 1861 until 1904 (she died the following year at age 80). Also on the ground floor are artifacts relating to the Native Americans who lived in the area.

Upstairs, the focus is on more general local history, including industry (Smith Brothers cough drops were made here and Pullman railroad cars just down the road in Valparaiso), military history (including war trophies brought back by local servicemen from various wars), and even Abraham Lincoln (his funeral train passed through Michigan City on its way back to Springfield, Illinois). A couple of rooms upstairs have also been decorated to represent a typical Victorian bedroom and sitting room.

From the upstairs, visitors can climb up the somewhat tight spiral staircase into the small lantern room for a 360 view of the waterfront and Lake Michigan. On the way back downstairs, there is an the extensive collection of historic photos on the walls with many interesting views from around Michigan City that we've never seen elsewhere.

One final stop is the small gift shop where there are some souvenirs and hard to find books on Michigan City and Great Lakes nautical history.

For the $5 admission fee, there is plenty to see here and one can easily spend the better part of an hour looking at all of the exhibits and artifacts on display (there's even more outside). We no doubt will visit the museum again on our next visit to the area - it's that good.‬

‪Fabulous Museum‬
زوجان • أكتوبر 2019
‪We went to this museum this afternoon and were fascinated! This is a museum that is run by the historical society and staffed by docents. The displays have been largely donated over the years and the docents who were there today were very knowledgable and very nice. We were with three women who grew up in Michigan City and they had no idea of the history of the place or the accidents that have occurred on the shoals of the town. Highly recommended. ‬

‪Fascinating potpourri of lake artifacts‬
أغسطس 2019
‪This museum is in a small building that, as the name states, used to house a lighthouse. There are four rooms on each of two floors with cases packed with relics about the lake, transportation, and the town of Michigan City. You can also access the cupola where the original light was located. However it's at the top of a narrow spiral staircase and it's a really tight fit to get up and back down. :)‬

‪Quick but great way to get the history of Michigan City.‬
سبتمبر 2019
‪Visited this museum during a weekend getaway. Admission was only $5/person. The displays were very interesting to read and informative. You can also climb a spiral staircase to get to the tower (where the light used to be). This location is within walking distance to several restaurants, the beach, and a nice fountain with small garden.‬

‪Fun place for a weekend getaway. Enough to do around the area, or just hang at the beach and “do nothing.” I would definitely go back again.‬

‪Rich in history!‬
العائلة • أغسطس 2019
‪My husband and I, along with our 12 year old son stopped in to the museum when our attempts to see the Pier Lighthouse didn’t go through due to high waves. This little museum is full of history! So many artifacts and replicas. Buttons on the wall will play a recording for each room about the items in that room. You can go all the way to the top, and look out over the area and see the lake. The two older gentlemen working that day were amazing and super helpful (Larry and Fred were there names I believe). They were super excited every time new visitors came through the door. It costs us $5 per adult to go in but so worth it! ‬

‪Morning visit‬
العائلة • يونيو 2019
‪We arrived first thing in the morning. The historian/greeter was very knowledgeable. It is a self guided tour, however he is available for additional information and to answer any questions you might have. Certainly worth the stop if one likes light houses and history. . ‬
