‪Thoroughly enjoyed this. Took a guided tour with very congenial, informed & generally informative docent. Small group, easy to delve into the story. Afterward you can stay and wander around the place at your leisure. The kitchen video is old 'America's Castles' if you remember the series. (I'd missed or forgotten this one). Rather sad story of the family who didn't manage to sustain this all that long. But then that's the case with most houses of this kind: the practicalities (if ever) of keeping them going took a huge hit with WWI and the income tax, with the final blow in October 1929. This one of course was built late, probably straining finances, and made a go for <15 years before the family did a lease back. Be that as it may, it's impressive and filled with lots of interesting things as well as storyboards about the family and their adventures. Oddly, though the square footage is huge, the layout leaves one thinking, well yes, of course, just the right size, not excessive at all. (Perhaps because so much of the space is given over to the great hall). If you like these sorts of properties it is worth and hour or two drive and makes a good centerpiece for a day trip (lovely area too, if you want to drive around)‬

‪I was so excited to go back as an adult. I went on a field trip there as a kid and loved it. I do love houses with a history. This one is interesting from the different periods of architecture to the story behind the vision. Once you enter and pay ($10 you can roam where you wish. I think for an hour and 15 min. Don’t miss the informational video playing in what was the kitchen. The the grounds must beautiful in the summer, I went in March. You can also roam outside too. Groups are limited in sizes and there were about 4 or so time slots each day open. I called and reserved my spot.‬

‪This place was a gem! Fun to explore on a self guided tour. I do wish more areas of the house were open but it is a gorgeous place.‬

‪Luckily, our GPS directed us right to this home tucked into the hills around the city. We had to make reservations in advance and admission was an expected $10 donation. Tours are all self-guided at this time and they give you 75 minutes to see everything. The door to the Manor opened promptly at the scheduled time. We had not printed the PDF guide that was available on their website so we paid $3 extra for a printed booklet. Otherwise, we would have had to read the room descriptions on our phone screens. The booklet helped explain the various rooms and giving explanations of the architecture and furnishings.‬

‪We have probably been to a dozen or so events at this venue and still enjoy it each time. Shakespeare in the garden is my favorite but it is important to stay hydrated (and to have a designated driver or Uber).‬

‪Read a lot about this fabulous place. I got an opportunity to visit to visit. It was a late Autumn evening and it gets dark early. Thus, we did not get a good view of the place. Add to this the entertainment area was overcrowded. Overall, I did not get a good impression, albeit the place where we were crowded had a lot of beautiful artwork and antique pieces of furniture. I will visit this place again during summer or so.‬

‪We visited this amazing home in February, and while it was not horribly cold outside, the majority of the home was comfortable and cozy. The decorations and architecture were amazing. When you walk in the main entrance, you walk into the Great Hall, which was like I had always imagined a Great Hall should look like. We opted for the self-guided, main level only tour as we didn't want to wait 1.5 hours for the full, guided tour. Since we were the 1st visitors of the day and the tour guide apparently had nothing better to do, he followed us to a few rooms and gave us a ton of info - and while we probably learned more than we would have in the guide book, it was also a bit annoying as we wanted to be on our own.

We definitely want to return in the summer when the gardens are in bloom and may elect for the guided tour at that time, so we can see the upstairs of the house. They are planning a Shakespeare on the lawn in June, which could be enormous fun.

The only downside was the visitors restrooms, which were in uninsulated, drafty rooms, like bathrooms at campgrounds or older roadside reststops (fortunately they did not smell). However, the sinks worked fine and had hot water immediately.

All in all a must see!‬

‪My 72 year old mother, 14 year daughter and I went to the Salisbury House and paid for the guided tour specifically to see the library. 90 minutes into the tour we asked the guide about it and she told us it was closed. That information should have been shared when we purchased the tickets. Very very disappointing. The house was very beautiful and the history was interesting but the tour was too long. I wouldn’t take little kids. Or teenagers. ‬

‪We weren't sure what to expect but enjoyed this so much we have already started recruiting family and friends to come back for a visit with a tour -- and hopefully tickets to a murder mystery night! This is an amazing place even without the tour (we were too late, but you don't get to see the whole place without one), and those that work there are in love with the place and share stories and point things out as you walk through. LOVELY, one of the highlights of our spontaneous trip to Des Moines.‬

‪The docents give formal tours three times per day. Go on that tour rather than the self guided one. It'll cost $4 more but it is well worth it.

The house has a fantastic story and the builders used materials from very old mansions to make a new one.

It's beautiful, unique and the stories are entertaining.

The gardens are minimal - just a quick stroll.

I'm glad I went!‬
