Average trip. We arrived at approximately 9:30 am and made our way towards the entrance to buy our admission tickets. After buying our tickets, we set off to explore the museum. The museum was geared towards kids, as there were a lot of hands on activities, as well as play stations located throughout the museum. There were several exhibits, including a dinosaur exhibit, an exhibit focused on interesting structures throughout the world, a weather exhibit and a planetarium. There were informational plaques located in some of the exhibits, that detailed what we were seeing in front of us. As we were leaving, there was a presentation going on, where an employee brought out several reptiles and told us interesting facts about them. At the end of the presentation, there was an opportunity to touch the reptiles.
Tip: I recommend spending 2 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

We were able to enjoy this visit with an Adventure pass through our local library. I was impressed with the variety of hands on experiences here and it has a decent amount of things for a wide range of ages. My 2.5 year old had the most fun with the legos, the gravity location and the toddler play area. While not quite old enough to understand most of what she was seeing it was great hands on opportunity for learning. They had the traveling dinosaur exhibit while we were there and it was interesting though not as much hands on for a toddler. But overall it was a fun activity to do during the winter to get out and still stay warm.

This is a great place for kids! We visited with our children and niece, and they were entertained for almost four hours. There were several exhibits, all of which contained interactive components. The planetarium was very good, as was the indoor nature area. My daughter particularly loved the animals!

We got into this museum for free using our annual membership card from another state. Made that purchase seem like a bargain now that I know that there are a few museums that honor the membership in just about every major city.
That being said we got there two hours before closing and regretted it. My lil one could have stayed there the whole day. Having been to quite a few of these kinds of museums what made this place stand out is they had someone doing a pretty top notch experiment just about every half hour. My lil one now says she wants to be a scientist. Even if you skip the experiment demonstrations there is lots of things for kids to do. Probably needed half a day to really experience it all.

This is a very nice family museum for children of all ages. There are lots of topics of interest including a planetarium, which does not cost extra (unlike most museums). My son had a very good time there.

We had a great experience at the Science Center of Iowa with our three young kids. Lots of activities and areas to explore. My son and husband are both big LEGO enthusiasts, so we really enjoyed that exhibit. Would definitely recommend if you are traveling to or through Des Moines.

The Science Museum has something for everyone: hands-on exhibits, interactive programs, and a planetarium. There is a parking ramp just across the street.

My daughter is 13 and wanted to go here first on the vacation. She loved it. It does seem geared more toward younger kids but she still enjoyed it. The IMAX is closed but tge shows were good. We really enjoyed the one about fire.

This is not your average Science Center! They provide areas here to really get the older kids thinking. Multiple levels to explore. They learned coding, explored the lego areas, built an arch, made paper rockets to shoot, and make their own robots to take home! Many other fun activities too. The parking garage is right across the street. Look up online when they are busy and they get a lot of daycare and school groups there. It gets really crowded. I would plan for 4 hours or so here.

This science center is definitely geared towards kids 3-9 years old and they do great with that audience. The exhibits are interactive and the topics covered have decent variety, but save for one or two exhibits they don't change much.
Not great for older kids or adults. They do a mixology night for the 21+ crowd that is fun but most of it centers around booze and not science.
The WHO weather people have a station there which is an awesome experience for everyone.

I would not eat lunch there, I would walk to the spaghetti works which is about a block away. I figure about two hours per visit, unless you’re adding a movie then maybe three hours.
What is the cost to get in?

The cost is $12 for adults, $8 for kids 2-12, and $8 for seniors.
There is an additional cost to see the IMAX movies, but we were very busy and entertained by all of the included events, shows, and regular science movies, without seeing any IMAX ones. Have a great time!

We have spent an entire day there. There are plenty of things to keep you busy there.
3-5 hours would be more than enough time to do the egg drop, play in the water ways, make and shoot your rocket or see one of the live interactive presentations.
