The brochure sounded interesting so we took a drive to Bixby. There are no signs directing you to the ice cave, steamboat rock or springs. The trails are overgrown and not maintained. I got the feeling the State is trying to hide this hidden gem so the rare plants and fauna are left alone. No ice yo be seen, but a cold blast of air for sure.

Looking for something to do in the heat we decided to visit Ice Cave. The road was a little narrow but we found the preserve fairly easy to find. We had to cross a stream walk on rocks and up to the cave. We could feel the cold air even before we approached the steps. It looks like there’s a trail to walk beyond the cave but decided to come back when it’s a little cooler and explore. Definitely worth a drive and short walk to check this out. There is a stream and an area to have a picnic if one desires.

Bixby State Preserve north of Edgewood, Iowa is a natural wonder. It's tucked into the landscape and is rustic. The natural beauty is peaceful. To see the park, you should definitely bring hiking shoes and energy to go on the trails. They are no bathrooms and everything is self-guided. There are historic Civilian Conservation Corp structures including a shelter with a fireplace.

Absolutely Beautiful. The park structures are in rough shape. There are no bathrooms. The entry road is a narrow gravel.
This is one of the few, if not the only Algific Talus slopes open to the public and this park has one of the most diverse plant life in the state.
The hiking is beautiful, lots of limestone outcroppings on the sides of almost a 200ft ravine. To get to the Ice cave (which is gated off but still worth a short hike) you need to cross a small stream. Lots of little swimming holes for a fun afternoon.

A small ice cave, a cold spring, interesting rock formations all in a short distance from the parking. There were lots of spring flowers (and stickers for your dog's fur). There is an old CCC shelter that you could picnic in, though we stayed out of the dark structure since it was a nice day. The pit toilets looked like they were victims of aerial bombing. So no facilities as far as we could tell.
The north entrance/exit was blocked so you can only enter from Edgewood.

Bike to this park often (350 ft. vertical drop in about a mile), burns the brake pads on the way down and pancakes on the the way out. Always something new on every visit. Hike along spring feed trout stream, explore the limestone bluffs, and of course there is the "Ice Cave". No modern facilities. There is an old limestone shelter house (no bathrooms). No crowds, please.

If you are traveling through Northeast Iowa and have some time to spare for a nature hike then take the time to stop by Bixby State Preserve. This is a low maintenance type of preserve so you will have to print off any information for the preserve before you get there as there are no brochures or pamphlets there. The only facility is a pavilion and a few grills next to the creek to enjoy the beautiful setting. The Ice Cave, plants, and setting are spectacular and a nice way to unwind and spend some time in the great outdoors. The algific slopes allow plants to grow here that you will not find in the surrounding area. Make sure to take a camera and some food and water.
Enjoy!
