‪The village buildings are very well kept and present a interesting look at the history of the Kalona area. There is a gift shop with very friendly staff. ‬

‪Good value for the money. Very interesting look back in time. The staff was super friendly and helpful. If you enjoy history and textiles this is a must stop for you. We spent 2 1/2 hours in the exhibits.‬

‪The nearby Amana Colonies gets more attention, but this little gem in Kalona is worthwhile. The museum has terrific historic artifacts, including an incredible quilt collection. And the people are sooo welcoming and informative. A great place to visit.‬

‪A very charming historic downtown in a quintessential small Iowa town. There are so many things to see and do here including stopping by the Kalona Creamery and Golden Delights Bakery. It's only about 20 minutes outside of Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.‬

‪It is apparent that a great deal of care of attention to detail has gone into the Historical Village. It is surprisingly large, and there was an inundation of historical information scattered around the village in displays and audio recordings. Most of the buildings’ interiors were furnished to look as they would back in the late 19th century/early 20th century. The quilt collection was awesome, and the (for lack of better words) rock collection made me want to become a geologist.

The gentleman working at the front desk and giving a portion of the guided tour was a Kalona native who ran a local business and had great pride in the geologic exhibit as his family had personally collected the stones from around the world.‬

‪The tour cost $10, which I never mind paying for an historical restoration. They need the money. This village is very well organized and had a great variety of buildings. Each building had an audio tour. I prefer to visit these places that depict life for the common people, because that's how my ancestors lived.
We were disappointed that the Mennonite Museum was closed, the one downside of visiting in November. The upside was that we had the place completely to ourselves. It took us about 2 1/2 hours including the quilt rooms. If you don't read everything you could do it in 1 1/2 hours.
There isn't anything that would interest most pre-schoolers, but anyone 6 and up would enjoy it, I think. If they like this sort of thing.‬

‪We had a wonderful visit at kalona historical Village, the ladies there was very knowledgeable about the Amish and the Mennonites. She was very friendly and helpful, I would recommend stopping there to learn their history, and not just about Amish and Mennonites, but about the Pioneer Life too‬

‪The Kolona Historical Village is a great way to spend an afternoon especially if your interested in history and want to know how folks lived their lives years ago. When visiting the Historical Center you will first enter the museum section and purchase an entry ticket . You can peruse the museum or head out to see the buildings. All the historical buildings exhibited will have an audio guide explaining what is on display within the building. There were a number buildings that held my attention and really enjoyed seeing. Most notable for me was the Loom House , Railroad Building and the farm equipment “barn”.
The loom house had a weaver there explaining weaving and making thread on a spinning wheel. That caught my attention because for the life of me I could never understand just how a spinning wheel made thread. Well about one hour later with the nice lady explaining “Looming and Spinning “ i got " it" and realized just how important such devices have been all throughout history.

I enjoyed the RR building and moved on to the Farm Equipment Barn … lots of excellent displays there too. Had to catch up with the rest of our group who were touring the museum . I managed to see a number of displays and then our group was guided thru the quilting section … me of all people ... Looming, Spinning, and now looking at quilts … you bet ! The tour was an educational treat and a delight to the eye. We spent a good 3 to 4 hours at the village and I did not get to every exhibit. The Kalona Historical Village is a wonderful experience, especially if you are interested in history. I hope some day to return to see the exhibits missed,‬
