Great spot for some local hiking. There are a variety of types of trails (flat, hilly, valley, ridge) scattered throughout the region. Overall though, on a scale of 1 to 10, the strenuous level would be about a 3.5 in our estimation. We will return for another day of hiking Preparation Canyon.

Preparation canyon is a short 2 hr. Or less drive north of Omaha. Beautiful scenic area. Largely untouched by commercialism. Nice picnic areas. I recommend taking a picnic, as there are limited restaurants close by. Enjoy nature!!
Fall colors are amazing. Also, a scenic overlooking the valley area.

Four of us had a fantastic hike through Preparation Canyon State Park! There are many excellent trails through thick forest areas and many inclines and declines. Some trails were a challenge due to the previous rain making trails muddy and the hilly trails slippery. A walking stick was helpful for sure. We wrapped up our hike with a picnic at one of the park’s picnic tables. Carrying a set of binoculars would be helpful. Water, hat, great attitude... bring them! This was a great break from the COVID-19 “pandemic” and the recent rioting in Omaha. We would highly recommend this park for a mental reset with nature.

A beautiful fall drive, north of Pisgah, Iowa. Great hiking and enjoying fall colors.
Peaceful looking down on the valley. It's in the Loess Hills.

We camped here for two nights during the week and may have been the only people in the park. We saw no one else--just wildlife. We camped at Site #3, which is located up a short steep hill. It seemed to have fewer bugs than the lower sites, so I would highly recommend it. When taking your gear into the park to camp, take the trail past Sites 1 & 2 to get to Sites 3 & 4--it's much flatter than the easternmost trail. It seemed like most sites had some firewood lying around, so I would recommend checking before carrying logs in. Site 3 has great views and tons of rabbits, deer, and birds nearby.
The parking lot for visitors/campers is located on the east side of the park, but google will take you to the west side. There is a little station to fill out camper info near the parking lot to reserve your spot. The station also has maps. Sites are $9 per night.
Trails are well maintained. We treated our clothes with permethrin and used deet before heading out, and we didn't have any issues with ticks or mosquitoes. The campsites each had a fire ring and a picnic table. There are no bathrooms or water stations. We enjoyed the solitude and views. We would consider camping here if visiting the area again. Be sure to check out the overlook trail nearby!

This was a nice place to backpack and camp. There was literally nobody in the entire park when i went here. The backpacking campsites to the west are a little swampy so there are bugs and little wind if it is hot out. The campsites are pretty nice though and include a table which is very convenient. If you want the privacy, worth the drive from Omaha/Council Bluffs.

This place has great hiking trails. One of my favorite places to stop and hike. The near by Loess Hills State Forest has even better ones.

Great stop for short hikes. The trails are not heavily used. Nice picnic areas and campsites available, although we did not use either. We were driving part of the Loess Hills Scenic Byway and wanted to get out and walk awhile. We are in our 60s. Some steep areas. Hiking boots recommended.

We spent an afternoon in the Loess Hills admiring and enjoying the fall color. Preparation Canyon Overlook has a very nice scenic overlook that you can see a full view of the Loess Hill's and their color. (We have been there in the spring & it is equally beautiful.)
It has a nice walking trail though we did not walk this time.
From there drive south to Preparation Canyon State Park - a pretty view of the valley and Loess hills. Also, a nice family camping & picnic area. You really need to go to both areas.
On your way to or from stop in Pisgah for homemade ice cream at the Cherry Top Cafe!! (& they give good directions also.)
