Great learning experience for a family taking a road trip with homeschooled kids during the peak of COVID. Good information and a powerful monument.

Wish this is better maintained. Dirt road. Don’t forget to stop by the Last Missouri Trail monument on the way. It is located at the same path. He is the founder of the city, deserve better recognition.

Really liked the monument very cool how it is presented. I did feel there could be a few driving signs leading to the monumen.

We have a 43 foot RV and a tow-
were NOT able to enter the narrow gravel road to this monument:)
this is definitely not I an attraction For a big rig to go to. It’s On the edge of a neighborhood and so to get down
-had to go through the-narrow streets and steep neighborhood roads. We barely got out without destroying our gig😫.
I’m Sorry we could not get in because it looked like a good monument:(

This memorial is a "must see" if you get near the area. The description of Chief War Eagle is so underrated, he was a sincere friend of the early settlers and his daughters married and integrated into a then evolving society and change of life styles. There are places still today that are named after these native peoples. Not a "big" attraction, no charge, look around, spend a little or a lot of time and enjoy the good reading on the plaques at the base of the memorial.
Enjoy

This monument is on a bluff. You have to drive a gravel road to reach it, but once there you have a concrete sidewalk. The monument is interesting, but the view of the Sioux River merging with the Missouri River is the real reason to visit. Pictures of the Rivers have to be taken through a chain link fence, but this location offers the best view of the two rivers in the Sioux City area.

It was very wet this morning and we tried driving the one way loop to the top. The vehicle started slipping, so luckily i could back down. Wish we could have seen it.

Well done monument to honor Chief War Eagle. From the top of the hill you can see the Missouri river and the Big Sioux river. Some railings are missing and most of the pathway is just dirt.

With a free couple of hours this is well worth a visit, read the other reviews for details.
You can find all you want to know about War Eagle and Theophile Bruguier on the internet. To the other reviews, I would add that from the parking lot, it’s a paved sidewalk to the monument. (It’s probably handicap accessible??) The monument is a stylized steel Indian figure on top a tower of field stone (from glacial deposits). It’s somewhat of a remarkable construction. The dirt path leading off to the right from the parking lot leads to the cliff edge, from which photos/views are possible of the Big Sioux River about a half-mile or so from it’s confluence with the Missouri. Other than that, there’s not much else.
I haven’t visited for a few years so I can’t speak to the current facilities.
It’s about 4 miles from downtown. Go north on I-29 to exit 151 (which is Hwy. 12), go about ¼ mile and then turn right onto War Eagle Drive. In about 3/4 mile, War Eagle Park entrance will be on the right. (a small stone sign) An alternate route is West 4th Street (off of Hamilton Blvd); where the park entry road is about 2 miles. 4th Street turns into War Eagle Drive; so in about ½ mile, the entrance (stone sign on the left). It’s a gravel entry road up a steep incline; part of which is one way (watch the signs). Hours 7 am to 11 pm. I wouldn’t recommend visiting after dark or alone, as it’s an isolated spot. Better lighting of the statue is from light in the morning. The bluff faces SW.
