Fun little place to go and see, especially if you are interested in Lewis and Clark. The short history of the burial is neat to find out, and you are standing in the footsteps of L&C. Impressive monument for the first US soldier to die West of the Mississippi. Take a moment to remember Ser. Floyd.

There is an interesting story behind this monument, and it's worth a fifteen-minute stop. But it's not worth going out of your way for.

In Sioux City, Iowa, along the Missouri river, is a memorial to the only person who died during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. it takes only minutes to see the obelisk, to look out over the river, and to see downtown Sioux City in the distance. It's a nice change of pace. Nearby in downtown Sioux City are two beautiful murals on the side of some buildings along Seventh Street by Wesley Parkway.

We did not the story of this soldier until planning a road trip. I can’t imagine the trip across unknown terrains and facing unknown dangers. Then to die in agony and be buried in a grave faraway from home. It is a part of history not to forget

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 6:30 pm and made our way towards the monument. There were plenty of parking spaces available outside the entrance. The monument was towering and there were several informational plaques located alongside the pathway, detailing the history of Sergeant Floyd and the creation of the monument. One of the plaques was very faded, and it was difficult to read what was written on it. Past the monument was a nice scenic overlook of a body of water.
Tip: I recommend spending 15 minutes here if you truly want to see everything.

When in Sioux City this is probably a must visit. No, the view isn’t great anymore (Interstate 29 is right in front of you). And the monument is not on the spot of his original burial. But the monument is a testament to the Corps of Discovery and their courage.

The Sergeant Floyd Monument takes a little effort to get too, but once you wind your way through and industrial area and get to the top of the hill you will find a small park with a gravel parking lot. From the parking lot it is just a short walk up to the 100-foot-tall sandstone obelisk. The monument marks the grave of Sergeant Charles Floyd who was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition when they set out on their journey to explore the Louisiana Purchase in 1804. The exposition was barely underway when Sergeant Floyd when Sergeant Floyd fell ill in Late July 1804. Sergeant Floyd health continued to decline as the expedition made their way up the Missouri River. On August 20, 1804, Sergeant Floyd died and was buried on the Banks of the Missouri River Near Present Day Sioux City, Iowa. When Lewis and Clark returned to the area in 1806, they visited the grave. During the entire journey Sergeant Charles Floyd was the only member of the Expedition to die. Over the years, erosion from the Missouri River place the grave in danger of being washed way. On August 20, 1901, Sergeant Floyd remains were reburied here on top of a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The Obelisk that marks his grave today was completed in 1901. The park is rather small, consisting of only about 20 acres. Around the Obelisk are storyboards detailing the Journey of Lewis and Clark, and information about Sergeant Floyd. From the monument you get a grand views of the river. All total I spend about 30-minutes enjoying the view and reading the storyboards. There is no charge to visit the monument so If you are a history fan, as I am, it is well worth the effort to visit

It is a monument that cost a lot of money to build. Nice view from top though. Easy parking. Free. Visit the “interpretation Lewis and Clark museum” first to understand the history of this monument.

Took the time to turn off the interstate to check out this monument dedicated to the only man that died on the Lewis and Clark Tour of Discovery. Nice setting up on a hill with the Missouri and Sioux City in the distance. Some of the markers have been vandalized so there is a need to get those fixed.
