‪Our friends knew the history of this catastrophe and shared as we searched it out. How great of the community to erect such a moving tribute in memory of this tragic event.‬

‪Flight 232 crashed landed at the Sioux City airport and while many were injured or killed, it could have been much worse if not for the ability of the captain and all the rescue workers from Sioux City who trained for just such an emergency. This is a monument to the bravery and heroism of all. This is a place to pause and remember the courage of all, and to remember those who perished 30 years ago.‬

‪My husband and I stopped here after walking along the riverfront and seeing this area as we were getting ready to leave. We didn’t realize what this area was for until we saw the sign and then googled it. Once we saw the results from our google search, we instantly remembered hearing about this plane going down when we were kids. This memorial is really beautiful and peaceful. It’s a wonderful reminder of the kindness and goodness that can be found in people. I love the rocks with inscriptions that lead up to the main statue telling a little bit about what happened. The statute at the end is the perfect choice to remind the visitor of not only what happened but the spirit of the people who came to help. Please make a visit if your able. We visited at night and it was still touching and worth it.‬

‪My family went here and we spent about 20 minutes. It’s absolutely beautiful. You take a few moments to pause and reflect and to remember those involved who passed and who survived. It’s a very touching memorial. You can easily just sit there and reflect. ‬

‪This simple memorial commemorates the people throughout Siouxland (Sioux City and the surrounding communities) who selflessly responded to aid the victims of a disabled DC-10 that had crashed while attempting an emergency landing at the Sioux City airport-hence the name, "The Spirit of Siouxland." The memorial is more often referred to as the "Flight 232 Memorial," and this is reflected in the sign on the street in front of the memorial.

The memorial itself is made up of a series of large rough hewn stones in the center of a path that leads to a lower plaza which has as its focal point a statue of one of the rescuers carrying a young boy to safety. Each of the stones has a cast brass plaque with a moving quote about the people who aided in the effort or words spoken by rescuers themselves. The statue brings to life the iconic photo that has become the symbol of the rescue effort.

This out-of-the-way memorial is worth seeking out for its inspirational and motivational message of people coming together to help others in time of need. ‬

‪I was glad to see another reviewer wrote an excellent description about the history surrounding this memorial. While the area sustained flood damage several years ago, the rejuvenation process continues and things are looking pretty good again. This is a picturesque spot in Sioux City and offers a great view of the Missouri River. The area itself is calm and peaceful. It's easy to get to, just off Interstate 29.
A walking trail is adjacent to the memorial and there is a dance pavilion just a few steps to the east.
Parking and restrooms are nearby.
Note - if you plan to park and use the walking trail, it is a good idea to place valuables out of site within your vehicle. Don't get me wrong, the area itself is safe. However, there have been issues with theft from vehicles. ‬

‪On July 19, 1989, United flight 232 left Denver Colorado bound for Chicago Illinois. 296 passengers were on board including 52 children that were participating in United Airlines "Children's Day" promotion. Somewhere over Alta Iowa about 60 miles east of Sioux City the disk in the tail engine broke apart due to undetected metal fatigue. The debris from the shredded disk penetrated the tail of the plane and cut through all three hydraulic lines. The plane lost its ability to steer and was locked in a slight right turn.

Captain Alfred Haines and pilot trainer Dennis Fitch were able to work a miracle. By alternating the speed of the left and right engines on the two wings, they could slow the descent and course correct the slight right turn. They turned the plane around and headed for Sioux City and attempted to land at the airport. The descent and pitch were to fast. The right wing dipped and hit the ground snapping off, spilling fuel and igniting in flames. The rest of the plane slammed into the ground, broke into three pieces, flipped over and slid into a cornfield.

111 passengers died including 11 children. 185 passengers survived many of them walking away from the accident sight.

The pilots worked a miracle, but the emergency ground crews were a major factor as well. I was there that day working at St. Luke's Hospital. My father and brother were active fireman called back to duty. 285 Iowa National Guardsman were on duty and ready. The airport fire fighters had trained for this and acted instantly and correctly. The extra fire fighters, police and guardsman were on the scene finding survivors in the wreckage and wandering the cornfields. The whole community responded including when the injured began arriving at the area hospitals.

While the rescuers were working, local photographers were capturing pictures of the scene. There is a particular picture that captured the nation. It's Spencer Bailey as a three year old being carried to safety by Lt. Colonel Dennis Nielsen after the crash. That picture has been cast in a sculpture and is displayed at this memorial site. It's a tribute to the pilots that worked a miracle and the emergency response crews that saved dozens more after the crash.‬

‪A moving memorial to a tragedy that the community responded to in a monumental way. Recognizing the crash of Flight 232, it is one reminder of several in the area in regard to this incident. Take some time to walk along the river and explore other attractions...it will be worth it.‬
