This is amazing country, imagine driving or riding across the high plains and finding the Arikaree Breaks for the first time. It reminds me of standing on the eastern rim of the Badands in South Dakota, only here the canyons are rich with grasses and various cactus plants. They just drop off in front of you, beautiful vistas. Now it is croplands on top and pastures in the bottom. Do not expect any motels or restaurants, or restrooms by chance...

Interesting geological location, but with severe limits due to size and ownership. Arrived late afternoon, prime time for a photographer, and saw the ravines from the Overlook and continued around the gravel road loop to include a drive by the trail to Horse Thief Cave. There are a limited number of vistas along this route. The roads are slightly improved dirt and gravel and travel is not recommended when wet. There were 2-4 inch tire ruts visible in some stretches, especially on the eastern side approaching the cave entrance.

Finding our way to Horse Thief Cave was a lot of fun and beautiful country. Sort of like a scavenger hunt. Once the pavement ends, the roads are dusty and rough in places, so if your vehicle has never been off of the pavement, this is not your thing to do.

Little know amazing miniature grand canyons on the Kansas, Nebraska boarder. Receding ocean and later receding glaciers many years ago carved an amazing miniature Grand Canyon in the remote Northwest corner of Kansas, north of St. Francis. To get there, enter St. Francis off of US 36 highway on Benton Street. Continue through the town on Benton and continue about 15 miles north to the historical marker. Enjoy the drive through only a small section of the breaks. Also enjoy these pictures.

it was a interesting visit. glad we stopped by there before we seen the canyon lands of Utah as it probably wouldn't have been so.

I’ve traveled a lot and love these little “off the beaten path” attractions. This one was great. This is not the Grand Canyon so as long as you temper your expectations I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
Make sure to get a map in St. Francis (nearly every restaurant and gas station has them) and read along as you travel by each marker. I would imagine that these roads get a little rough when there’s rainfall so I would take that into consideration.

Lived in the area many years and was suprised by this. Its a mini grand canyon. Beautiful ride through canyons that you don't expect to see in western Kansas

Living just a few miles from The Arikaree Breaks I enjoy them often!
Each season has its own unique beauty. But spring is always my favorite. If we've had winter snow and spring rains the deep ravines, trees and wildflowers along with native grasses come to life!
Driving to them is always full of anticipation, a special moment when I get over the hill and there they are. Breathtaking!

It was a longer drive out of St. Francis than I thought since I didn't have a map. I didn't find much of a place to stop but the view was nice. I kept going on the dirt road and ended up in Nebraska on a paved road.

I picked up a map at a filling station in St. Francis and followed their directions. I stopped at most of the location stops. Some of the signs had been knocked down, but it was easy to follow. The roads were quite good, even though it had rained recently. I was amazed at the pioneer homes I found and the beauty of the landscape.

Can you go hiking in the Arikaree Breaks near St. Francis, KS?

I doubt that you can. Private land owners would have to grant permission and may not want to do that with cattle in the breaks. And liability issues. You can call 785-332-4950 which is the Cheyenne County Museum and they may help you.
In about two weeks the breaks will come to life since we have recently had rains. They are beautiful! If you come to visit them check into The Spencer House Bed & Breakfast and The Motorcycle Museum. Fresh Seven Coffee Shop and Diamond R Bar.

We saw in the magazine of sites to see in Kansas and the author referred to a view of a "little Grand Canyon in Kansas" at St Francis. We are going to be traveling through there on Monday the 23 of November and would like to know if it is the same as the Arikaree Breaks? If not where to we see this?
