We had such a great time at Churchill Downs after dark. We ended up paying $125/pp for the all you can eat and drink option for the Homestretch Club.
The food was buffet style, and somewhat average. They also pulled the buffet out 45 minutes earlier than announced. The bartenders were very friendly, but the lines a bit long.
Our favorite part had to be to be sitting directly off the track, with our own little private booth. Hordes and jockeys were so close, and we truly enjoyed that!

Went for the derby and it wasn’t what I expected. So crowded and trash everywhere. Not like you see on tv. Do yourself a favor and watch it on tv.

Far above our expectations. This is an a modern, high tech totally fascinating museum that will teach you a great deal even if you have no interest in horses.
Especially recommend watching videos of jockeys and racetrack employees.

Took advantage of Twilight Thursday races for our first visit. Parking was free but a bit chaotic. I purchased tickets online so I just showed the gate attendant the QR code to get into the park. The facility layout is confusing for those visiting the first time, & we had to pull up floor plans online to locate the escalators.
We sat in section 318, which is very near the finish line & we had a great view of most of the track. The betting attendants were helpful as we were unsure how to bet, but ended up betting on each race for the fun of it. My kids picked their favorite horse based on their name, which is probably why we lost most races.

Got to attend the 149th Derby with our vendor. Fantastic experience. The place is so iconic. Whether you like horses or horse betting, you need to at least go once for the experience. Dressing up, the women with the big hats, it is just great. Awesome atmosphere, plenty to sample on drinks and food. I highly recommend.

Derby day in the infield, if you want to watch horse racing then this is not the place to go, as you will only see it on the big screen. However its worth it for the atmosphere and people watching. Lots of bright colours and massive hats and an overall party feel to it. However be prepared to queue for everything, we waited in line for about half hr to get a drink and then you can only get two drinks per person and then they are expensive, also after the Derby itself everything else closes even though there are two more races. Bring chairs and sunscreen watch the people go by and enjoy

Not being equestrians, nor much into horse racing, we weren’t sure how much we’d enjoy visiting Churchill Downs. But on the other hand, being avid learners and students of Life, we knew we’d end up with at least a little more knowledge than before we’d arrived.
A little more did indeed become a lot more.
First, I highly recommend starting off your tour with taking 25 minutes to view the introductory movie. An in-the-round set of linked video screens delivered an immersive experience of bucolic horse farms, patient training, and the gradual build-up to the excitement of race day. Wonderfully done. So much so that tho we entered the viewing room as somewhat indifferent spectators, we walked out as racing fans. Those of us who’d signed up for the General Tour then stayed behind, to be met by our Tour Guide—as well-prepared and humorous an individual as one could possibly wish for. We were taken out to the track, where we learned a wealth of history and interesting facts. (e.g., only 3-year-old horses are allowed to compete). After our tour, we walked thru more learning opportunities, in the two floors of museum displays, then stopped for a tasty and reasonably-priced lunch in the Derby cafe. All in all, well worth the morning we spent there.

We were here for about 2.5 hours and it was enjoyable to see the hustle and bustle as they prepared for Derby. The museum was informative and enjoyable for non-horse racing people like us.

Toured Churchill Downs with the "Barn and Backyard Tour" during Derby Week. Behind the scenes look at stables, jockey dormitory, chapel, Wagner's Restaurant, and the start of a race. Tour Guide Bob was phenomenal. Fantastic up-close-and-personal look at a historic race track. Entrance to Derby Museum was included with the tour.

What do you wear to the Thursday night races? Can we go casual? Or does everyone dress up?

It depends on where your sitting. If you are going to the clubhouse I would dress nice. The grandstands are a little more casual. The infield should be very casual. My advice is based on experience from years ago and watching the derby on Derby day. But nowadays people seem to not apply rules of dress anymore even going to the Opera in Washington, DC I have been shocked. So checking with a local may give you better information. I would certainly dress comfortable as it’s often a lot of standing.

I plan on going to take the historic tour. If rain is In the forecast would you go? I know it’s rain or shine. I get that just wondering your opinions

I am thinking of going to a race in April. I see that you can bring 12x12 purses, but duffel bags are not allowed. Does anyone know if a clear 12x12 tote bag is allowed? I have one that I’ve brought to NFL games in the past. Thanks!

Are you planning the opening night, the Saturday before Derby or the first race days of Derby week? Because this week prior to Derby is quite crowded, especially from Thurby, the Thursday then Oaks, then Derby. I would not use that as my primary bag. If it folds easily, I would carry it in that way. Sometimes they are stricter than other times, honestly very unpredictable.
I carry a small purse, bring as little as possible and I bring a folded up bag for whatever I get. It is especially handy if you get drinks in glasses because they are so fragile and hard to carry around.
If I can be of any more assistance, feel free to contact me through Adviser.

Hi I have never been here before - are there any options to buy food and be able to sit in your seat, or must you buy tickets to the brunch specials they have?

About Derby week, are you attending just Derby, or also Oaks, or other events that week. Honestly, as a veteran of many years from infield to reserved seats, to bleachers well I' ve been through many areas, the FOOD. is way overpriced (try over 12 dollars for a cheap canned beer) and the food is varied by where you sit. Each area serves different food and the more you pay for ticket, the better the food. But, during Derby week, most folks get stuck with the lesser quality. Popcorn is terrible as are pork chop sandwiches etc.
I would either buy a Derby box from a restaurant or merely get a Subway. Food may be brought in, just not a lot. Brunch specials are the pits.

Is there a dress code for family day?
Jerry L

No, only if you are in the reserved areas like Stakes Room, Millionaires Row etc. Just dress cleanly and ample coverage. Haver good time

Greetings!
I’m most sorry, but I have no idea!
Enjoy!!!!!
B.T.W. “Wagners” across the street from the track is an old diner, crammed w/racing photos and history.
It’s really special!
The food is great.
Jockeys & trainers have been eating there for decades.
Frankly, I rather go back there!
Ha!

I had the #13 horse to place in the Oaks race on Friday. How do I know how much it pays and how do I cash it?

You must go to the ticket booth to collect winnings.
