Our guide Craig provided us with a very entertaining and educational tour of the state capital building.
There is a lot of rich history in Baton Rouge and we felt that we learned a lot during this tour.

The building is impressively tall as can be seen from the photos. The observation deck at the top is outdoors and offers a different vantage point of the surroundings. The gift shop is also located at the top with the observation deck but it was small and did not carry the type of trinkets that we normally like to purchase at state capitols. The staff throughout the capitol were very nice and helpful, and as usual they enjoy talking to us once they find out we aren’t from around. It was worth seeing this capitol building AND the old state capitol building.

an amazing structure with a well maintained period architecture. The building is immaculate and still has beautiful features that you must see if you appreciate preserved history.

Allons droit au but, le bâtiment est assez austère vu de l'extérieur mais les intérieurs sont richement décorés avec un style Art Déco exceptionnel !
Montez d'abord avec une première série d'ascenseurs, puis un autre plus petit ascenseur pour atteindre la plateforme d'observation qui offre une très belle vue sur la ville ainsi que le Mississippi. Attention la plateforme peut être fermée si le temps se déchaîne - même en dehors de la période cyclonique, les orages peuvent être violents dans la région.
Profitez-en, tout ceci est gratuit. Une petite boutique de souvenirs se trouve également tout en haut avec bon nombre de goodies qui régaleront les aficionados de l'État de Louisiane.

Beautiful building courtesy of Huey Long. The art deco interiors are stunning. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The display about Huey Long's assassination was interesting. Based on the images here, if you didn't know better, you would think that there were no African Americans in Louisiana. Even the depiction of sugar cane workers was as white people and not enslaved individuals.

Nous avons visité ce bâtiment administratif américain qui nous a plongé dans l’ambiance américaine . Très belle architecture monumentale , on accède à la salle du sénat et la chambre des représentants , impressionnant . Posez des questions aux gardiens super accueillants . On nous a gentiment raconté les détails de construction du Batiment très ingénieux ! Et la vue au 27eme étage vaut vraiment le détour pour se rendre compte de l’étendue de la ville … et c’est gratuit. Très contente d’avoir vue cette facette de l’Amérique, au-delà des films ou des News. Merci de votre accueil

This visit was an incredible opportunity for wonderful photo ops and to get familiar with the location's history. The drive into the Capitol grounds cuts through lush gardens, passing beneath moss-draped Live Oaks and in front of the beautiful Governor's Mansion. The 34-story Capitol building itself was the creation of the iconic Huey Long, controversial governor ofLouisiana from 1928 to 1932. He was later assasinated inside the Capitol building while a U.S. Senator. The exact site of the shooting is now a display with photos and plaques. An impressive statue of Long on the grounds now marks his burial site. The views from the 27th floor observation deck in the Capitol building are an absolute must-see. There is no admission to this marvelous, historical area and free parking is usually available.

My husband and I visit Capitol buildings in every state. This one is truly magnificent. The architecture and attention to detail is amazing. When you visit, be sure to notice the front steps. Every state is etched in a step with the year. The view from the 27th floor is breathtaking. This is a MUST SEE in Baton Rouge

We were there when the legislature was not in session so we were able to visit both the senate and house chambers. We took the elevators (yes, it takes 2 elevators) to the observation deck on top. There is a great view of the river and downtown Baton Rouge.

Interessante edificio governativo, il più alto degli Stati Uniti, voluto fortemente nel periodo della depressione dal governatore Long.
Marmi lucenti, bronzo ed un architettura Art Decò conferiscono un certo fascino.
Notevole la possibilità di salire con 2 ascensori fino al 27 piano dal quale si può osservare il panorama per svariati chilometri.
Un esperienza appagante.

Was planning to visit this Monday 8/22 . If anyone is local wondering if the capital area has been impacted by the awful floods? I've tried to call, no answer which I completely understand. Thank you!

No, the state capitol was not impacted. Anything downtown Baton Rouge, the museums, etc, are good

Is it only open for tours on weekends? Do we have to buy tickets, if so how much? Are there student and teacher discounts?

It is open daily 9:00am to 4:00pm, except on major holidays.
There is no fee for admission.

Hi, the Capitol is open from 8 to 4:30 on Sat. and Sun. There are no tourguides, but there are self-guided tours. Take the elevators to the top. Just follow the signs. Don't miss the basement because the bullet holes where Gov. Long was shot, are still visible in the marble walls.
