The premise was cool (hot!) but it was insanely busy even at 8am. You definitely need to be there before low tide, and the pools are washed away shortly after. IMO there are other opportunities to see geothermal pools including digging for them (e.g. Lake Taupo). There's no need to pile in with everyone else here. The beach is beautiful, though.

Sand was so hot we couldn't walk to the hot water spot. Recommend coming in the fall, winter months. Mid summer is too hot. Beach reserve was beautiful.

I decided to visit Hot Water beach and Catedral cove. The experience is unique since I could not believe how hot the spring water from underground was until I started digging. its just an amazing experience, make sure you visit on low tide only.

This was a fun visit because there are thermal springs right under the beach. A few things to keep in mind to make the most of your visit:
1. There is limited free street parking just past the main parking lot. We parked all morning for free, but saw people paying to park in the lot when free parking was available just 50 feet away.
2. Bring your own shovel or hire one before you head to the beach.
3. The thermal springs fed by the underground fissures are only in a very small area of the beach (near where some rocks jut out toward the water, see picture). You can't dig randomly in the sand to find the hot water, you need to try to stake out a space within this very small area.
4. Just a little to the left or right of the thermal spring, and the water will be cold. Right on top of the thermal spring, the water will be HOT. If possible, keep moving laterally to find the sweet spot.
5. To dig your own spa, you need to go within the 4-hour window 2 hours before to 2 hours after low tide. Otherwise, the tide comes in and covers much of the sand area on top of the thermal springs.
6. Try to arrive early. We went on a Tuesday morning in November and it was already difficult to find a space to dig near the springs. If you wait a bit though, someone may vacate their sand spa and you can move in.

A short ten minute drive from where we were staying in Hahei, and well worth it. We rented a shovel to dig a hot tub. But - I think you probably have to get there pretty early to find a good spot to dig. There are rock formations south down the beach, and digging right in front of them gets you the hottest water. We tried digging a few places and just got normal temperature water, but another family let us join theirs and it was SCALDING! Hotter than a hot tub in some parts! Very cool experience, never done anything like that before.
The beach itself is huge, tons of room, with beautiful islands just offshore. People were surfing, but the water isn’t the best for swimming because of the waves and riptides.
Still a great experience overall!

Enjoy your time digging the sand and locating the hot water spots. Two pro tips: Bring a larger spade and focus your energies at the southern tip of the beach.

I too, think this is a scam. We took a spade provided by place we were staying. Showed up right at low tide. There are three different areas to park in. Boy I would have been irritated if I parked far away from here. We walked over to where people were gathered, as I read that the area where hot water was available for digging was not a wide swath. What an under statement. Some people were sitting in pools, although we did not see any steam coming from said pools. We kept digging holes in different places, and testing the water. No temp change. In between we would wait for people to vacate holes and dig around and see if they were sitting in a place with warm water. Nope. We attempted around 10 of our own holes on the out skirts of where people were sitting, and tried out probably the same amount of pre dug holes. Nothing. So either a very very specific spot, or.....I don't know. The idea seemed cool.

A very special place on Earth, in North New Zealand at Coromandels.
On the stretch of beach, you rent a spade to dig a hole or pit enough for you to sit or soak yourself. 60 or 70 degrees celcius hot water gradually filled the pit. You need to wait for the cold sea wave fill your pit to lower the temperature of the hot water.
Amazing beautiful nature!

One of New Zealand's quiet forces of nature, but equally fascinating. Right on the beach you can find these hot springs that show many people the way!
It can quite suffice just to dig through the sand with your feet and you will find it. But beware, already very hot, it could not withstand two seconds.
The parking situation I found a bit difficult.

Hi, odd question but we have a tight itinerary in NZ, really want to visit HWB but the only day we can go the low tide is 8pm. Sunset is around 6pm. Do people still visit once it's getting dark ? is it obvious where y ou go to dig?

If you have a tight schedule I honestly wouldn't include Hot Water Beach. The idea that you can dig your own little hot pool is cool, but be aware that the area where you can do this is actually quite small. Me and my boyfriend went on a weekday in October, so not even peak season, and there were a lot of people there in the hot water area so not enough room for us to dig our own pool. The further away you have to go from the "Danger Hot Water" sign, the deeper you have to dig to actually get the hot water, and by about 10m away from the sign the water is just cold.
If you're not doing anything else on the Coromandel Peninsula then I wouldn't say it's worth the time it takes out of your schedule to drive up to HWB.
Hope you have a great time whatever you decide! :)

What time is low tide and the best time to go?
كُتب بتاريخ 13 يناير 2019
It changes every day. Search online for low tide at hot water beach and the date you'd like to go. 2 hours before or after are perfect. if you go in the second 2 hours you can often take over an already dug hole. ;)

Google 'New Zealand Hot Water Beach Tides'. We went early, 3 hours before low tide. There were people already at the hot spots and it just went on getting busier (and cooler as the hot water was spread around further).

There is a public car park near the beach which you have to pay for.
If you don’t want to pay you can park long way from the beach and walk.

I am planning a trip to Coromandel Peninsula and I have some doubts that would like to clarify:
This is my itinerary:
11 00 Hot Water Beach
17 00 Sunset @ Cathedral Cove Walk
Just wondering:
(a) Will it be too cold if I visit hot water beach on May?
(b) Do they have a place on the beach for me to clean up (like a quick shower)?
(c) Just wondering do you have any place recommend in between my hot water beach and cathedral cove walk?
Thanks

the thing with Hot Water Beach is that you need to go there 2 hours before to 2 hours after low tide. the natural underground springs are at the low tide mark. it's not too cold in May to visit as the springs are really warm.

Due to my flight time and short period of time in Auckland, I can only get to the beach 1.5 hours after the low tide..... is there any point or will I still get to see the glory of the hot water spas?! (I don’t necessarily need to dig and lay in one)
كُتب بتاريخ 7 يناير 2018
Not worth going there.
It’s overcrowded and overrated.
The drive is too tiring to even think about it.
Rather go to a nice hot pool somewhere and relax in the spa!
كُتب بتاريخ 15 أبريل 2018
Is this beach crowded all year round..think of visiting between 16th-22rd.
كُتب بتاريخ 6 يناير 2018
The beach will be crowded for about 2.5 hours either side of low tide; even then its only the bits that have hot water underneath. The rest of it will be almost deserted!
كُتب بتاريخ 7 يناير 2018
Hi there, I am planning to go there this Saturday. i wonder do you know how much they charge if renting a shovel on the beach?
كُتب بتاريخ 28 ديسمبر 2017
There is a lifeguard hut at the far end of the carpark where they rent out shovels for $5. Not sure if they require a deposit.

Hi Expert,
I am going to Hot Water Beach tomorrow. May I know how to know the low tides time? I do not understand it read the data online which it said 3am? From the photos, it seems like before sunset? Appreciate someone can confirm. Tks!

Tides are different every day. Just look the tide times up.

We've definitely seen people walking their dogs on Hot Water Beach and if we recall correctly there is something about dogs mentioned on a sign at the surf beach parking - they must be on leads, clean up afterwards etc. Just bear in mind that many NZ beaches have different rules for dogs depending on the season, with more restrictions during the summer months. Hope that helps.
