I've been to Hopetoun House many years ago....ironically, I really only remembered the library and study from that visit. So here's a wee review from this visit. PLEASE NOTE ,HOPETOUN IS SEASONAL AND NOT OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND. CHECK OPENING BEFORE YOU GO.
ACCESS:-
Hopetoun is well signposted from the major routes. Take note though, you do go through a housing estate and alongside the waters edge to reach Hopetoun.
ENTERING THE GROUNDS:-
You'll be greeted by a lovely person at the ticket booth as you go into the grounds.
CAR PARKING:-
Surprisingly, the car park is fairly small. Maybe there might be other places for parking when it is busy. I did not see blue badge parking, but that said,I never asked either. Car park is free though unless it is for an event.
THE HOUSE:-
Absolutely stunning. The family still live in the house (in one wing). I noticed threaded throughout the house, there was family pictures which is lovely to see. Just truly depicts that first and foremost this house is a family home.
Well worth seeing.
I was there at the Outlander Tour event which was great. Our guide Fiona was so knowledgeable about the house and shared information on its history as well as the house involvement in Outlander . Please note that there are steps to get into the house and it is on different levels- there is no lifts that I certainly seen.
TOP TIP:- Highly recommend going to the viewing platform to get beautiful views of the Forth and beyond.
ANOTHER TOP TIP:- If you're an Outlander fan- nip along the road to Midhope Castle to visit. It's on the Hopetoun Estate ,but it's a wee walk away.
THE STABLES KITCHEN:-
It's absolutely beautiful inside. The staff were so lovely- by far the kitchens greatest asset.
I personally found the food to be quite expensive though. Don't get me wrong the cakes were lovely but I was quite disappointed to find out that what I wanted for lunch had run out (I was there just after 1pm). So I ended up getting loaded jacket potato(cheese, leek and mushroom) with side salad (mixed lettuce leaves -no tomatoes etc) -£11. There was 2 loaded jackets on the plate. I didn't eat much of the salad. Personally, I would charge half the price and give half the portion - or at least offer that as an option for those with a smaller appetite.
Would I return to Hopetoun House:- Absolutely yes.......all the staff I spoke to were lovely, definitely an assett to the House.

We visited on a Sunday and it was such a great attraction to visit. We were warmly welcomed into the house by Phil who was so knowledgeable and answered our many questions! There was lots to see in the many rooms and it’s worth chatting to the guides in each room as they help bring the house to life with their insights. I would highly recommend a visit here when it opens again for the 2025 season! The grounds are also lovely to walk round if weather permits.

We visited as part of a larger “Outlander” tour because the estate was the site of several filming sets, but the estate is not at all specific to Outlander and is a well maintained and beautiful estate. There was no guided tour but there were docents available in most rooms who were friendly and informative. Really would have loved the time to walk the grounds - it looked like there were several paths that I imagine were beautiful walks (if I remember correctly, they were 30-60 minute routes, so leave enough time if that is something you want to do).

Two couples visited on a damp Sunday morning.
What a lovely building with spellbinding architecture and amazing views from the top of the building across the Forth Estuary.
It’s set in beautifully kept laws and woodland and has lovely walks. (Weather permitting)
The interior is so tasteful and spectacular furniture from a bygone and graceful age.
The Volunteers in the various rooms and areas are so helpful, informative and enthusiastic and made the visit complete.
Lastly the coffee shop was very cosy and with pleasant staff.

En route through Scottish lands we decided to visit this fantastic place, and the truth is that the visit was worth it. The road to get there is narrow for motorhome, but you pass perfectly. I don't know if it's a well-known place, but we were perfect, there were very few people. The very attentive and helpful staff explained the family history and the different spaces. Keep in mind that it is an inhabited building, so do not expect to find the typical tourist tours. That's why it has this charm!! For us visit must!!!

Hopetoun House is a fantastic place to visit — such a surprise to find this real gem not far from Edinburgh. It feels like a well-loved home but also boasts beautiful decorative panels, marbles and paintings (including a Rubens and a Rembrandt) and numerous fun features. In particular, I want to mention the docents, who are very welcoming, warm, and incredibly knowledgeable; they share their knowledge freely — not talking down to you, but bringing you into the world of Hopetoun House with enthusiasm, good humor and grace. Thanks for an outstanding, memorable visit. :-)

This is a lovely house, not too far from Edinburgh.
The interiors are lavish and the exteriors are equally impressive.
Don't miss a climb to the roof to see the bridges over the water and the extended lawns.
Entry is free for Historic Houses members.

Absolutely stunning house with a fascinating history. Delightful, helpful and very knowledgeable room stewards.
Despite being a largely fine Sunday, we were surprised how quiet the property was, not that it affected our enjoyment of the house and the grounds.
Very good 'value for money.'

Absolutely stunning house, amazingly friendly and knowledgeable guides in most rooms with lots of history to tell you about.
Fabulous grounds with marked walks, lots of deer and amazing trees.
Nice lunch at a good price in the stables.
No gift shop or play area but we liked that as it was not overly commercial.
It was a lovely day out, thoroughly recommend.

Hi, I will be in Edinburgh at the beginning of may. Is it easy to find a taxi in Dalmeny Station to get to Hoeptoun House? thank you

Visited today and a bit confused and disappointed after just reading a Country Life magazine article talking about a 12 acre kitchen garden. No walled garden was visible from the roof and we didn’t see any gardens when we walked in along the drive. Also don’t remember seeing it mentioned in the brochure we received. There just seemed to be open grass and trees surrounding the house.

Can this be reached by public transportation?
كُتب بتاريخ 23 سبتمبر 2019
Hi Glenda, unfortunately we have no public transportation links near Hopetoun. The nearest train station is Dalmeny Station in South Queensferry and then we would suggest taking a taxi from there. Many thanks, Hopetoun

How long does it take to visit the house? We have afternoon tea booked for 1.30 and would like to visit the house first.
Many thanks

We won't have time to visit the house itself during our trip to Scotland, but I was hoping we would be able to take photos of the exterior. Are you able to view the house from the parking area, or do you have to enter/pay admission to be able to get close enough to see it?
كُتب بتاريخ 7 سبتمبر 2016
yes you can view the outside of the house and grounds without paying an entrance fee

We would like to visit Hopetoun House in late April 2017. We shall be staying in Edinburgh, but we shall not have a car. Is it possible to reach you using public transport, plus a taxi, if necessary? I should be most grateful for your help.

Hi, I was just interested to know how easy access is to Hopetoun House was and how it could be improved? What's it like for coach access and also I heard there was a back/ country road, why is this not open all visitor season?
كُتب بتاريخ 5 سبتمبر 2015
Thank you very much for your enquiry. Access to Hopetoun House is only from South Queensferry and is signed all the way from the A904. This route does easily accommodate coaches as well as cars and bicycles (following national cycle route 76). There are unfortunately no other permanently accessible routes into Hopetoun that can accommodate significant regular traffic or coaches.
Hope this helps
Best Wishes,
The Hopetoun Team
