Great boat trip with Forth Tours. Enjoyable, informative commentary on board, great crew and drinks/snacks for sale.
Amazing views of the bridges and coastline.
The island is a magical place and the staff on the island are just wonderful.
Castle and island are well worth a visit.
We thought we might keep this a secret but we had the whole island to ourselves for the last hour!!
Captain took us to see the seals on the way back to Queensferry.
Great views of the razorbillls and gulls.

Decided to take a cruise out to Inchcolm Island and so glad we did.
A beautiful little island with some amazing views and an abandoned abbey (amongst other things) to explore.
The cruise out and back had informative narrative throughout too.

Wonderful day out. Enjoy a short boat trip to the Island then you have about two hours to explore the ruins. There is a small museum and a shop which sells souvenirs and coffees.

So we went here by boat from north Queensferry from the pier near the rnli station the island is about 3 or 4 miles away and when you get there you're able to walk around the ruined Abbey and most of the island some of the island is inaccessible due to seagulls nesting but most of it is accessible there is a little shop on site and toilets as well and a little museum. We stayed on the island for about a hour and a half before boat picked us up and took us back to the pier by going under the 3 bridges before that.

This incredible abbey is totally worth the visit! Not only do you get to take a boat out to the island and see the Forth of Firth from a new perspective but you also get to visit the abbey that dates to the time of David I (12th century). The Stewards on the island were really friendly and knowledgeable and the abbey was great for exploring. Also on the island are some WWI and WWII bunkers. If you're going, bring a picnic and enjoy the island (beware of the gulls though!).

We took the option of extending our bridge viewing trip on Maid of the Fourth and it was well worth it to spend 90 minutes taking in the Abbey and the wildlife of the island and surrounding waters. The nesting gulls had young chicks at the time of our visit but the staff had warned that they might be aggressive so we just gave them a wide berth. Historic Environment Scotland have a centre with interesting displays and a gift shop which also sells hot & cold drinks & ice creams.

We purchased tickets from the Maid of the Fourth tours to stop at this Island and I am so glad we did. Inchcolm Island has two historic sites both about 1000 years apart. The first is the Abbey built around 1100 that you can GO ANYWHERE......while it is in 'ruins' it wasn't completely destroyed during the Reformation and it is still very intact. It is very big and you can feel as if you are in a maze. You are able to go all the way up to the bell tower and climb stone stairs that are over 900 years old. There are also former gun turrets from WWI and WWII that you can climb all over. And then there is the wildlife....puffins and seals. If you take the Maid of the Fourth tour, you are there for about an hour and 45 minutes and that is just about enough time. We loved the Abbey more than Edinburgh Castle...and that is from our 16 and 17 year old teens!

Is there any shelter on Inchcolm Island if the weather is bad?

Not a lot! There is the small museum, a bit of shelter outside the toilets and some parts of the Abbey have a roof but, generally, I would not like to be there waiting for a boat for any length of time if the weather was inclement.

What is the best way to get to the ferry from either Glasgow or Edinburgh without a car?

How accessible is it to someone with limited mobility? Not a wheelchair user.
Tony H
Progreso, المكسيك398 مساهمة
This is not a place where a wheelchair person would be able to take in the site to it's fullest however, someone with limited mobility (cane, walker or, just some difficulty walking) should if they are careful and take their time be able to enjoy most of this site. The upper floors would be difficult to access as they are up stairs only and the stairs are uneven rock. The pathways are gravel and the main floor interiors are all rock floors. There is some unevenness but with care it should not be a problem. The other consideration is how well the person can see. There is a lot of moving from bright light into deep shadows and much of the interior is in shadows so this could pose a problem for someone with limited mobility and limited sight.
Hope this is helpful
After reading the reviews I am a bit wary of the gulls attacking ( I do live in Australia with swooping magpies, not nice at all) when is the best time to visit without worrying about swooping birds.

Was just there and it’s nesting season... so long as we didn’t go into the nesting areas we were fine. Explored the whole Abbey and lots of the island without any issue.

how much time do you visitors need to give justice to the experience? How often do the ferries run? thank you

A couple of hours would be fine to see everything but if it is a nice day you may want to spend more time, the beach is actually very sheltered.
There are toilets and a tea-room although we took a picnic that the seagulls were very interested in!

Bonjour,

Hi Anita , Ferry fares are £13 per adult and entrance to abbey is £5.50 so it would be a total of £18.50 for the whole excursion.
Kind regards.
