We saw a sign to the dam and decided to have a look, it’s a great little place to visit.
There is a cafe up there where you can get a coffee and hot food.

This is a great place to visit but not on a hot day as not much shade. lovely walk across dam with information boards explaining everything.
Cafe on site but found this quite expensive.
Well worth a trip

I took a side trip to Hinze Dam on the way back from hiking Pages Pinnacle.
I thank my lucky stars because Seqwater were running free guided tours of the dam that weekend (which happen once a year only if that) and I was in the right place at the right time as a tour was about to start!
We got a talk from a couple of senior dam officers and they took us along the dam wall for a history of the dam and some key information. They pointed out yellow buoys on the dam which test the water quality at all levels several times daily (the high quality oxygenated water is at the top) and some facts around water supply to Gold Coast & flood mitigation. Then we piled in a bus down to the bottom of the dam wall where we got to go in under the dam to see the huge pipe that transports the water from the dam to the water treatment plants in Molendinar & Mudgeeraba. The most interesting aspect for me was the environmental management demonstration/talk. Seqwater are required by law to prevent invasive fish species from entering the Hinze Dam where they negatively impact the water quality & ecosystem. So they trap all the fish heading upstream, and trained officers sort through them - the native species are released into the dam and the invasive/imported species (mostly tilapia) are euthanised. They are also responsible for environment management of the area around Pages Pinnacle.
There were lots of kangaroos jumping around down the bottom too, which got the tourists excited.
The staff were all so knowledgeable & easy to chat to - I asked multiple questions of 3 of the team & they were passionate, knew their stuff & had great stories to tell! A wonderful afternoon was had! Ps it was breezy & winds were chilly at the dam so bring a jacket!

Walk across the Dam Wall. Read the many information boards about the history of the construction. Ride one of the many mountain bike trails. Enjoy good food in the restaurant. Or just find one of the many bench seats, enjoy the view, and BREATHE. Thoroughly recommend a trip to it.

Nice dam with a great cafe with a great view. Good place for a short leisurely walk with the family. Should go in cooler weather, if not it can get very warm.

Visited on Saturday 14th May. It was my first visit there and was suitably impressed with the facilities there. Didn't get a chance to get out and walk it was too wet, next time I will.

This dam’s fish program was explained to us by a worker . It made the whole environment seem to become not only a water catchment. The recent rains had taken their toll on the spillway. We saw brim and eels in the pond below, along with an egret, a hawk, swifts , a pelican and 4 cormorants. All were fishing.

interesting and informative trip, the dam was at about capacity as the spillway was running, decent price at the cafe and the food was good.

A great site after flooding rains, with water pouring over the spillway. There is a cafe available for food and drinks and plenty of walking options across the dam wall and spillway or across the lawns to the waters edge.

I recently visited Hinze Dam. We went walking and Kayaking. Where is all the wildlife? whether it be in and around the water or in and around the trees and land. I saw 3 waterbirds and 1 butterfly. On my last visit several years ago I saw and heard heaps of different birdlife and butterflies, and also used to see kangaroos? Mere

Possibly due to the drought. A lot of wildlife has either moved to more suitable places or unfortunately died

We want to come here as a large family picnic.
Are there gazebos for sun protection, tables and chairs, anything for children to do?
كُتب بتاريخ 17 أبريل 2019
Thanks to all who answered. It is a big area. I don’t remember much play equipment but I think it would be a lovely place for a picnic.

Why is there no bbq at picnic area and little seating is it to force visitors to use the very expensive cafe.
The other BBQ area is worse it has no view of dam just the rear wall of dam why such a waste of money and what could have been a great day use area also the visitors centre is a waste of a space, can it be fixed so it can be used by more people

My guest has mobility issues, so having a BBQ was out for us, but I did note that the position of the BBQ was such that the water would not have been visible. Such a shame. Previously it was a lovely location for picnics and BBQs.

i agree with your feedback. we used to enjoy taking friends and vistors to Hinze dam for picnics but no more since they raised the wall and closed off the picnic bbq area facing the water. now one has to have a picnic on a lawn facing the info and cafe or go behind the dam wall. what a view???

Yes, the picnic and BBQ arrangements have changed, and unfortunately some of the facilities have improved and some are less conducive to picnics and BBQ. The facilities are great, but different to before. For new visitors it's not an issue; for people who loved the old facilities with the area for children to play it's different now.
