We loved it. Enough history to keep it interesting but not overwhelming like the Baltimore Museum (which is amazing). I loved the HO layout, it was well done.

This museum is nice. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about the history of the museum and the town. Definitely worth a visit as it is a self-guide walk through the various rooms and you can climb aboard a caboose.

Beautiful structure which is really well maintained. Ample parking either in front of building or just past the caboose. Admission was free. The displays are interesting and well done. A place to spend an hour away from the bustle of Ellicott City downtown.

Ever since they made admission free, my boys make obligatory trips every time we are in the Old Ellicott City area. An icon and a landmark, we love that it remains standing and is a legacy to America's transportation and economic history.

A great stop for history buffs and train enthusiasts. The extensive miniature train set fills a huge room and tells the story of the first 13 miles of the B&O. They have replica of the towns along the way built in their original fashion. The trains turn on and move along the tracks. There is a trolley in miniature and a full caboose to climb into which is a great photo opportunity. The main building has a lot of history and original clothing and furniture. The gist shop is cute and restrooms clean and available. The caretakers were very kind and helpful. Love the train bandanas they wear - very much like an old time conductor. The donation of $3 was well worth the visit. Parking is nearby. As an outreach they are looking to record personal stories from previous employees of the B&O Ellicott City contact info: emosher@howardcountymd.gov We would visit again in a heartbeat.

No effort was made to engage us- we merely walk on our own - disappointing - or did we just appear to not be worthy of full engagement ? Sad

Took a day-trip from West Virginia to experience some railroad history in the Baltimore area. This was our last stop before heading home and we were eager to see it not only for the railroad history, but because of the large flooding events we'd heard of occurring in the community. The station is the oldest surviving (but also thought to be the first) railroad station in the United States. It is made of roughly cut stone and has a cozy, rustic feel--to think it has been around for the better part of 200 years is incredible. The exhibits in the station are really informative and provide a good overview of the formative years of the B&O. The freight-house is home to an incredible model train layout that documents those original 13 miles, highlighting some of the most significant landmarks along the way. I could've spent 2 hours in there, just watching the trains on the detailed layout. In the lower part of Ellicott City, where the station is, it feels like a bygone era. It's obvious why floodwaters end up funneled into this area, but it's also such an incredible reminder of how we used to live.

Small railroad station in at the bottom of Main Street Old Ellicott City. Some nice pieces of history in there. So far the most popular spot to see is the old caboose just outside the rear of the building. They also have a space for young children.

We are new to the area and heard that Ellicott City has a cute downtown area. We stumbled upon the station museum. Many different trains are set up. Interesting to learn about the 13 miles of tracks set in the 1800s.

Do you realize there are some pictures here that are of the Museum in Baltimore and not yours? I don't know if there is a way you can fix it.

I see what you mean. There are loads of pictures that are not of this museum which may be confusing to visitors.
That is a drawback with Tripadvisor, it relies on contributors without vetting the content.
I would hope that the museum staff can rectify this situation and avoid the confusion
