‪We entered off of MacArthur Boulevard hoping to find an easily accessed overlook of the Great Falls and we were not disappointed!!!

A short walk from the parking area along the historic canal brought us to a bridge crossing a few significant falls before crossing an island to an overlook of the Great Falls.

Incredible view with lots of historical points!‬

‪We have lived near the Canal for most of our adult life. So many memories....from walking to running, to the JFK Marathon.‬

‪There are many sites to see this canal, but Hagerstown has a great place and you get to see the lock houses there too. Enjoyee this fall experience and got to just picnic and relax.‬

‪Visited the Cashawa Basin site in Williamsport. It has a small visitor center with some exhibits, a lock house museum, and a boat tour in season. The boat tour was mediocre but interesting. The hi light was a volunteer in the lock house who took us on a tour of the museum and explained the exhibits in detail. ‬

‪We have walked and biked a number of times along the C & O path, located on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. Very enjoyable with nice views of the river and Shephardstown (on the opposite side of the river). In the summer you can be in the shade for much of your walk. The only downside is that parking is rather limited and it is a popular destination.‬

‪The Chesapeake and Ohio National Park has many trail heads in the state of Maryland, but there are a few visitor centers along the path (about a 184 mile long national park). I believe this review is for the Cushwa Basin Visitors Center in Williamsport, Maryland. It's a great national park, but needs help. There are two types of visitors along the C&O in this area...the locals who drop by real quick to let their dogs take a big dump and don't clean it up, and the people who are seriously traveling the canal. Without the big piles of dog crap and trash thrown by the local yokels (I am from the area, attacking my own) it'd be a wonderful place to be in nature. So many different birds and creatures are attracted to the canal because...well...water! You can ride horses, or bicycles, or walk. Carry out your trash, there are no trashcans. It's sad to see the turtles swimming with someone's discarded Sheetz cup. There is so much history, but there could be improvements on staff, there are not enough educated rangers to tell people about the great history of the park. The visitor center could have more interactive info, it seems they even recently took some out, so sad. Please pick up your dog's poop people, it's healthy for dogs and people! Dogs pass diseases to each other and other animals, not to mention it's nasty to step in a big hot pile.‬

‪Towpath from old C&O Canal runs 184 miles - great for hiking, biking and running. Currently restoring an aqueduct in Williamsport MD. Should be interesting when complete.‬

‪The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park tells the story of 19th and 20th century America. It protects what was once an active transportation link between the coalfields of the Allegheny Mountains and the urban markets at the upper reaches of Chesapeake Bay. Construction began in 1828 but the can wasn't completed until 1850. By then, it already was obsolete as the B&O Railroad had already reached the canal's western terminus, Cumberland, Maryland. But the canal continued to be used to transport bulk commodities such as lumber, wheat and coal to markets in the East and operated until 1924. The National Park was established in 1971. Today, the park is the ninth most visited National Park in the nation with over 5 million visitors a year, more than Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. It contains over 20,000 acres of historical, natural and recreational treasures. Its 184.5-mile towpath is popular with hikers and bikers. The park has something to offer everyone...over 113 rare and threatened species of plants and animals, over 1,000 historic structures and a rich history of native cultures, transportation growth and Civil War conflict. Fully 5 percent of all historic structures within the entire National Park System are located in the C&O Canal National Historical Park. ‬

‪Most of the pictures posted here were the Georgetown section of the canal, which is located close by downtown Washington DC, not in Hagerstown, Maryland. They are two hours away from each other.‬
