This is a super fun trail! Lots of great overlooks to the river below. Apparently, this trail has the reputation of being "difficult" but maybe it is just a more difficult trail for the area. Just take your time and stay on the trail and all should be fine.

I did Section A (Billy Goat Trail) early morning @730am September 30, 2021. Only a few cars in the Visitor Center Parking Lot. Nice cool cloudless morning and no one on the trail.
The trail was moderately difficult. This is subjective as it depends on your fitness level.
I had a great time on the 1.7 mile rocky section; especially the climb up the cliff. Outstanding!
Wear a good pair of hiking shoes or boots. Took a 700ml Smart Water bottle and a light snack and it was more than enough. Just pay attention to the blue blazes. Some are faded on the rocks.

The Billy Goat Trail has a reputation as one of the toughest trails in the DC area, so I was keen to check it out. It is inside a national historic area, so it costs $20 to get in for the day. The C&O canal that runs along the Potomac river was really cool to check out as I was there too. I know the Potomac just having seen it from DC. The Potomac river at Great Falls is completely different - its a fast moving, dangerous river so I was excited to get on the Billy Goat Trail.
The trail is marked with blue blazes, so its easy to stay on the path. The first half is mostly just dirt/sandy trail with some rock hopping thrown in. The last half of the trail is where you have more technical terrain. But it wasn't as challenging as I would have hoped. The "crux" is a 50 foot traverse up a cliff. It looks scary in the pictures, but when you get there, you can see its really a pretty straightforward scramble up a big crack. There is an exit trail shortly after the traverse that takes you back to another trail that runs along the canal. Or you can continue on to section B and C. There were storms moving in, so I took the exit trail and made it back to my car just as heavy rain started to come down.
The loop was about 3.25 miles and took me about 1:15 to complete. The park is very pretty and the scenery along the Billy Goat Trail was fantastic. Don't let the "rock hazard" scare you away!

This is one of the most deadly trails in the U.S. because ordinary hikers try it without training, experience or water. In the Summer it can get really hot, and when you are half way in it is a long way out to get out - people die every year of heat stroke and/or dehydration. If you are a good hiker, good at rock climbing, and very careful, and no one in the crowd ahead of you does anything stupid to knock you down, this can be a very fun trail with great views. If not, you may die. There is limited cell phone coverage, and medvac requires a helicopter and thus any rescue is very slow. Note that only parts of the trail are dangerous, so get a map to show you what you may want to avoid (and help you stay on the trail).

Can anybody give some information about how many people are going to billy goat trail during October days? I.e. how crowded is it there? Is it pre-Covid crowded or is it sparse now? I’d like to go but I don’t want the kind of crowds I saw at Scott run or Great Falls. Thanks !

Always an excellent walk...however, people - please read the "Do not enter" signs. The trail now is one way and several folks ignore this...this is one way...so please respect trail rules! Other than this - the trail is an awesome adventure all the time!

If you are looking for a little more adventure along the C & O Canal, this is for you. Over rocks and through lots of trees. Why not. Take the time to go on this trail!

This is not a walk in the park. :). this trail is fin, and challenging in areas. Grab a map, your hiking boots, gloves, and water and enjoy a great day with friends and family. Should have stability and stamina to hike this trail.

We like all sections of the Billy Goat trail, but at this time of the year we gravitate toward the southernmost section, Section C.
Depending on when you visit, you'll see different things. On our last visit in the middle of April, bluebells and spring beauties were almost ubiquitous. There were also lovely clumps of wild blue phlox, may apples, white lilies, spring star flowers, golden ragwort, and assorted asters.
Near the north end of Section C, we saw evidence of beaver activity on a couple of dozen trees.
Due to the stay at home orders at the time, there were more people than usual on the trail on a weekday. Though not enough to make it feel crowded, and folks were mindful and polite about maintaining safe social distancing.

The signs say don't park on the side of the road, but you may have to park on the side of the road, because this is a very popular trail. The access is across the street from the Old Angler's Inn Restaurant; there are a couple of parking lots but they fill up quickly. From there you are on the towpath of the C&O Canal, which is nice in its own right. There are multiple hiking trails off the towpath, including Billy Goat Trail sections A, B, and C. A is the best if you like rock scrambling. You will be hiking over rocks and you will need to use your hands at some points to get through.
The river is just gorgeous here. There is a lot going on - tons of rocks to climb on and look at, moss, lichen, pools, vistas, forest. It's great for families once your kids are old enough to climb and hike safely. Great for photographers. Really just amazing in terms of natural beauty close to DC and the suburbs.

Hi I'm a bit nervous when I read you have to jump over crevices in rocks. What is the distance between rocks and how deep are the crevices? I'm 5'2" and I know children are doing this, but I'm 58 and a regular gym goer in decent shape, but nervous to hear I'm jumping crevices.

I'm trying to decide which part of the trail to do. I have a son who is 4. We do a lot of hiking in west at a variety of national parks but nothing with jumping from large rocks. He can go probably 4 miles. Input and thoughts on this trail?

Thanks everyone. We did it last weekend. The rock wall had my husband and I helping my son but other than that. We were good and we had a blast.

I think you need a car to get to both Dallas international airport and Ronald Reagan Airport . Both are around 25 mins drive
