‪An extensive archaeological investigation of Den Rock in the 1990s revealed discovery of six new Native American archaeological sites. It appears to have been seasonally occupied during the Contact Period (1600's). Evidence of food storage and/or tool making was uncovered. Thousands of objects were uncovered. The site was used by the Penacook-Pawtucket people.

Minerals taken from various veins at Den Rock were crushed and made into earthenware vessels. Small fragments of European bottle glass were found.

Evidence of European materials were found, incluing copper, glasss, ballast flint and a component of an iron gun.

The Den Rock artifacts appeared to be a good example of native-made gunflints.

A cock buffer from a 17th century snaphaunce gun was discovered.

Den Rock was also used as a Temporary Natural Refuge by Native Americans. Another example of a hidden camp is Anawan Rock in Rehoboth, Massachusetts.

A story from the American Revolution describes a panic in North Andover where it was rumored that British regulars were coming to plunder the town. Valuables were packed and people prepared to flee to the woods near Den Rock. The feared Redcoats never materialized, but it does demonstrate that Den Rock was a good hiding place, long after the American natives had disappeared.

Material sourced from: "Adaptation and Resistance: A Contact Period Component at Den Rock in Lawrence, MA", Jeffery Robert Carovillano, 2003, Bulletin of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society, Volume 64, 2003.

So we see that Den Rock is a lot more than dead-end trails and set-aside parkland!‬

‪My mom and I went here when we visited Lawrence to get some fresh air. Short couple mile loop trail to walk if you are looking to get outside. Very clean considering it is in the middle of a fairly populated area and the highway. I would not travel to the area just to do this small hike but if I was already nearby, and had some time to kill, I would stop.
In the middle of the trails is Den Rock which was cool to climb around.‬

‪I work only about 3 miles away from here, so this is a very nice respite to come to to walk around on a wide-path trail. Very easy to get to (right on 114, 1000 feet off 495), this little park offers a few nuggets of wonder, including some massive rocks halfway through the walk as well as a meandering river on the other side of the park. It is easily possible to spend a good hour just walking the wide loop or a shorter time doing out and back ventures. I recommend this set of trails if you just need to get back to nature and unwind.‬

‪Trails that lead to nowhere. Off to your left you'll continue to see 114, that's it. Nothing to write home about. Saw some interesting figures in the woods, use caution if traveling through this area alone.‬

‪Congratulations to the visitors of this park for keeping it so clean and conserved.

This place is for people who like contact with nature, walking, running, mountain bikes or climbing rocks. The place is large and has many trails. It's worth visiting.

‪The small parking lot will probably accommodate a dozen cars or so, and is located directly across Rt. 114 from the strip shopping center that contains Market Basket. From there several reasonably well marked trails take you past cliffs where you may find technical rock climbers practicing their moves, through woods to a pond and to a bench overlooking the Shawsheen River. In the summer bring bug spray, wear a hat, tuck your pant legs into your socks, and enjoy a walk in a space that looks nothing like the busy commercial area you have just left—good for your soul and good for your soles. ‬

‪Spent some times hiking at Dean Rock Park. Hiked up to the top, it can be a little steep, but not that bad. Nice area and the rock is huge.‬

‪First off, Den Rock is located on the outskirts of Lawrence, actually part of it touches North Andover. Parking is limited and trails are so-so. This place used to be "the place" 100 years ago with an outdoor theater in the woods and beautiful bridges and gardens. Times have changed. Although its not a bad walk, it is not what it used to be. Known for its giant granite outcrops on the left of the Park, its not well kept and trash is everywhere. Some decks near the wetlands have been damaged and fallen trees are covering some paths. If you still want to check it out, the entrance is opposite the North Andover Mall on Rt 114. Always advise a buddy when walking in the woods.‬

‪My husband and I came here for a walk and we were wowed! Lovely trails that either challenge you or can be a bit easier if you decide. Wonderful wildlife throughout. We saw deer and visited the bird sanctuary. At times you honestly forgot that you were in Lawrence. Swamps, brooks, flowers and let's not forget that huge rock that is in the middle of it all! Don't be fooled by the location.‬
