Enjoyed the Trappist Ale at Fish Restaurant and Wine Bar. At first I was...Seriously…a Trappist Ale from Spencer, MA, no way. While the beer is considered a Belgian Pale Ale, I would say it is much more robust than that. This actually reminded me of a full-bodied Flemish ale. Regardless of the category...this is a darn good beer with a nice clean finish.

Wow.....I had no idea that this building was back there. The grounds are huge and we had a great time. The brothers create many wonderful brews along with many other treats. Looking forward to some more Stout!

We visited the brewery on an open house, which I understand is once a year. Well, it was a zoo, thousands of people, long lines. Even though the open hours were 10 to 4 and we were there before 1, most on-tap beers were sold out. They had lunch but nothing for vegetarians.

Spencer Brewery is run by the monks of Saint Joseph's Abbey. The brewery is state of the art. The beer is good.
The only downside is they are not open to the public. They do hold an annual open house. Keep an eye for the date. It is worth the trip.

The Spencer Brewery is located at St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, MA. Per their web site, "Trappist communities observe the counsel of the Rule of St. Benedict, a 6th century guide for monastic life, that stresses the importance of ora et labora or “pray and work.” Monks are encouraged to be self-supportive and offer charitable assistance to others by producing and selling goods to the public." The Monks of St. Joseph's Abbey decided to brew beer to support themselves and their charitable endeavors. Their brewing operation is only a couple years old and is state of art! They sent their brewing Monks to learn the craft from the great Trappist breweries in Europe. After two years of divine information gathering and planing the brothers voted to move forward. The vote passed and the rest is history! This is the only certified Trappist Brewery in The United States. Their beers are heavenly. They brew Lagers, Stouts, Ales, and IPAs. They are only open to the public once a year so be on the lookout for the open house announcement!
