You would not expect such a museum to be in the lower level of Ferris State University's Library (FLITE Library), but it is there and it is well worth a visit. The museum is a self-guided tour that includes a timeline from the beginning slavery to the present time (actually outside of the library so you can visit this part when the museum is closed). The actual museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 5:00 p.m. and includes a variety of pieces from the Jim Crow era and pieces from more recent times. I think everyone should visit this museum and I'm amazed that it isn't more well known. The FLITE Library is at the main entrance to Ferris State University so is very easy to find. There is nearby metered parking available. The museum is free but accepts donations. No photography allowed.

It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to tour the artifacts in this collection. The layout includes a chronological display of racism from the roots of slavery through today. The display also touches on our discrimination of native Americans. On display is the commercial normalization of racist beliefs such as Aunt Jemima. We were surprised to see an African American Barbie doll call "Oreo" that included the Oreo cookie logo.

This museum is intentionally disturbing (at least it should be). It should make one upset and reflective.

We've visited the museum to get out of the heat, It has some interesting exhibits and history, which are most definitely educational.
It's a bit hard to find, and we had to find the right building first, since there are no big signs posted anywhere on the outside.

This is not a site for a quick visit. The museum does a fantastic job of using material culture to not only explore endemic racism in America's history, but to question our society today. It was a thought provoking experience, and though I was inspired by how well the museum challenged visitors to think, it was hard emotional work. I knew what I was getting into, but it was definitely a tough experience that I keep thinking about. Worth a visit!

I was looking up the phrase “Jim Crow” in Wikipedia and it mentioned Ferris, my alma mater. I was surprised to find there was a museum of Jim Crow artifacts at Ferris. Drove a long way to see it. I could have spent another 2 hours there but they closed at five. Hard to know the proper thing to say - see it, allow 2+ hours.

Interesting compilation of historical information and artifacts that attest to some of the most shameful nature and behavior of the human race. Definitely an eye opener.

The Jim Crow Museum is a "must" for any person interested in civil society and the struggles we have all endured to achieve such. It is a fabulous collection of racist artifacts. It may be a little intense for children, but it tells the story of racism in America that we all should understand, especially the little ones when they are mature enough to "understand and appreciate" its content. In fact, it tells the story that SHOULD be better understood by all people regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, race, etc. The Jim Crow Museum is a MUST!
