Cranbrook Art Museum is a beautiful building, and it is located within a magnificent campus. It is well worth a visit, though the art is sometimes pretty unremarkable.
One added note: The staff is friendly and enthusiastic.

A small art museum highlighting modern and contemporary art, architecture, and design through temporary exhibitions that change several times a year. The museum opened in 1932 in support of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, which launched the careers of so many great artists and architects, including Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertois, Ruth Adler Schnee, Florence Knoll, Harry Weese, Macarthur Binion, Jean Kavanagh, Allie McGhee, and so many others. I've learned so much from their exhibitions since I've become a member. They are eye-opening and thought-provoking, not to mention often fascination and thorough in their approach. Often something I see opens the door to the work of an artist I did not know or a connection to architecture or art that I can learn more about. Worth a visit as well as keeping an eye on upcoming exhibitions and programs!!

I went to see "With Eyes Opened: Cranbrook Academy of Art since 1932", the most recent exhibition at the Cranbrook Art Museum in suburban Detroit. Over 275 works, from 220+ artists, representing this legendary Academy’s various programs of study—architecture, ceramics, design, fiber, metals, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture were on display. The diversity of work in this massive exhibition, was a feast for the eyes, covering almost 90 years, from both former students and faculty. I liked how the galleries were arranged into different themes. "Architecture of the Interior", "Sculpture Court" and "Paper Trail" were a few of the themes.
Some of the students and faculty represented included Nick Cave, Charles & Ray Eames, Beverly Fishman, Edward Fella, Kate Clark, Harry Bertoia, Cleon Peterson, Robert Beauchamp, Artis Lane and Carl Milles, who's many sculptures can be seen around Cranbrook. The over 600 page exhibition book is excellent and well worth the money.
Tickets from the Cranbrook Art Museum are $10. Admission on Thursdays is Free. There's no charge for parking. Be sure to check out the many sculptures around the museum by Swedish Sculptor Carl Milles.

It is small and to make things worst, they are currently changing over exhibits with only one floor open. It was free but we probably walked through the current open area in 15 minutes!

Lovely inside and out. Beautiful extraordinary fountains surround the art museum, and great exhibits inside. A lovely setting - Cranbrook school and the nearby homes and buildings. You really have to go experience it. The exhibits change often.

It is not the DIA, but small and quaint. We primarily went for the album covers. Which was a good thing as the museum was under construction and there was not much else to see. They were not charging to get in, so that helped offset the lack of art. We were in and out in 20 minutes, which for a 30 minute drive, is rather disappointing. When they actually have the rooms filled, you can be there a good hour. So, it's hit or miss. If you are making a special trip, definitely call to see what's being shown first.
The Cranbrook area is beautiful, and on a nice day, great to walk around.

The Cranbrook Art Museum primarily features temporary exhibitions, of a high caliber. "Landlord Colors: On Art, Economy, and Materiality" and "For the Record: Artists on Vinyl" are two current exhibitions that continue that trend.
While "Landlord Colors" is the larger of the two, I enjoyed "For the Record" more. "Landlord Colors'' is made up of artwork by artists from five different countries linked by economic and social issues. The art ranges from small pieces to very large. Many were quite impactful in what they had to say.
"For the Record" is a reminder of how wonderful and artistic, 12"x12" album sleeves were. This exhibition focuses on covers done by artists from the world of Fine Arts, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dalí, Richard Diebenkorn, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol and many others. Many of the covers on display were paired with works of art from Cranbrook's collection. The albums cover a wide range of music.
These are two strong exhibitions worth your attention.
Cranbrook is open Tuesday through Sunday. General admission is $10 and there's many sculptures on the grounds of Cranbrook by Carl Milles you can see for free.

We saw a Nick Cave show here a few years ago that was incredible
On this visit- so so
This show features artists from 5 different conflict areas—for us- not very interesting
Needed someone more learned than I to explain what was the true meaning of this assembly

This museum is beautiful, and the surrounding grounds, complete with a reflecting pool, are very nice. The exhibits are very hit or miss. I like contemporary art generally, but was unimpressed with the current show. Nonetheless, this museum is worth considering for a visit.
