Great place to visit if you are interested in local history. Historic Harsha home. Lots of pictures and fascinating artifacts from the Harsha family and other local people and events. Cute little gift shop with books and videos.

My husband, Tom Green, and I had a wonderful visit to the Charlevoix Museum. It is full of interesting history of the area. The curator, Trevor D., was very professional and knowledgeable and met with us to help find information about Tom's great grandfather, E.H. Green. He was the first lawyer from Traverse City north to the Straits of Mackinac and resided in Charlevoix. Trevor informed us there is a Green street, named after him and the E.H. Green building, built in 1885. The building is still standing on Bridge Street. He had researched our great grandfather and had much information about his life and time in Charlevoix.
Thanks again, Trevor, for a truly memorable experience; one not forgotten and to be shared with our family and friends back in Texas.

We were interested in seeing the famous mushroom houses. This place sells a booklet for $5 that tells you all about them, which we got. But David Miles also wrote a book about the mushroom houses, but it also talks about the history of Charlevoix.
After seeing the houses, we returned to buy the book, “Boulders - The Life and Creations of Earl A. Young in Charlevoix, Michigan”. Mr. Miles then took us around the museum and gave us the history. My friends and I regard Charlevoix as a highlight of our trip, and the museum was certainly good part of it.
By the way, his book went way above my expectations, and I highly recommend it!

Just a couple of blocks from downtown is this cute little museum run by the Charlevoix Historical Society in the girlhood home of the wife of the real estate developer who crafted the locally famous Mushroom Houses.
The staff is warm and welcoming, displays interesting and informative. Down in the gift shop you'll even find relics of Earnest Hemingway's first marriage.
Speaking of the gift shop, we found our quarry hidden in the rack with the postcards -- a perfect little booklet for $5.00 that gave us brief facts about each of the mushroom houses with walking and driving tour directions. Stop and grab the booklet first like we did, peruse it at lunch in one of the many wonderful restaurants in town, and then go see the houses.
This is a quick stop, but do make it part of your trip. Admission is free, but the Historical Society will appreciate your donation -- or spend some of your vacation budget there on a book of full color mushroom house photographs or on beautiful replica prints of Northern Michigan maps hand drawn by Irene Harsha-Young.

Every time I come to Charlevoix I make a point of walking pass this stunning house with it's wraparound porch. Today was extra special because the museum was open and I was finally able to see all the wondrous displays inside. A visit to Charlevoix Historical Society should be on everyone's list. This place is a standout inside and outside.

We are glad you finally made it in to the museum Adrianna! If you're ever in town during a time we are normally not open, you can give us a call as we are here Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm and can open up for you or your group.

We stopped here after seeing the Mushroom houses. It was fun to learn that Earl Youngs wife grew up in this house. There was a photography exhibit going on while we were there which was also enjoyable to see. There is someone there to answer questions, but you can walk through on your own. There is no fee, but they accept donations.

I like visiting any local historical society to learn about the town we are in. The CHS is a fine representative of its class. We learned a lot about Charlevoix during our tour of the late 1800's home. I found the photo museum to be of particular interest in that as the family genealogist, I am in possession of many photos of our ancestors dating into the 1800's. The very knowledgeable fellow who I was able to talk with educated me in great detail as to how to research early photo's that date back to the beginning of photography. This was very educational and was a pleasant surprise for the hour invested.

We visited the charlevoix lighthouse and in order to get a stamp for our lighthouse passport we had to stop by the historical society museum. T reverse was very generous and kind. He shared the history of the area and made us feel very welcome.

Entrance is free with donation request. Main floor is a house from the late 1800s and then the floor below is a history of Charlvoixv.

This house is small, but full of history. For just $1 you can learn a great deal of information about Charlevoix, MI. Our guide, Jacob was knowledgeable and very nice. We saw the exhibit about The World of Work. Jacob even played the player piano for us.

Does The Society have any photos of downtown Boyne Falls? If so are there any pictures of the Wojciechowski general store circa 1060/1970 which was located at the corner of Center & Main Streets?

Hello Deb. We do not have any photos of the Wojciechowski General Store. You could try the Boyne City Historical Museum. Their number is (231) 582-6597. Their museum moved into a new building last year which is part of City Hall.
