We stayed at two MI state parks and visited another two parks on a recent trip. All parks were well kept and camping with a motor home worked great. At Hartwick camp grounds, info said .25 mile trail to Bright/Glory lakes… it is closer to .5 miles.

Stop on the way to Mackinaw City. Was much better than a rest stop. Bathrooms were very clean. We learned something, got to stretch our legs, and used the picnic area to eat a packed lunch.

Last old growth forest in Michigan. If you do nothing else, walk the Old Growth Forest Trail. Beautiful, especially in the fall. Nice visitor center and there is a logging museum. Many other longer trails, a great campground, and 2 fishing lakes. Easy access of I-75.

Great place to camp or just visit. Trails, logging museum, chapel in the woods, visitors center, fishing lakes. The bathrooms and showers at the campground were so clean!

We went to the Visitors Center, one of the lakes and the 7 mile drive. The Visitors center was pretty big with exhibits and hands on activities. The lake was quiet and you can fish on the pier. I didn't really find the 7 mile drive at all interesting.

We had some time, so we got on our bikes in Grayling and biked out to Hartwick Pines. Then we had a nice walk back through the trail and saw many great pines and hemlocks, including the old Monarch Tree. Got a few great pics... nice memory!!

Super clean park with lots to do for all ages. We walked the Old Growth Forest Trail and it’s with the 1 1/4 mile walk. Lots of benches to sit and rest along the way. I recommend that you take water to drink on the trail. We loved seeing how Michigan looked prior to 1840. The trees are majestic and beautiful. They allow pets on a leash along the trail but not in the buildings. Stay on the paved path because there is poison Ivy and ticks off the path. We enjoyed the Logging Museum and the Visitors Center. There is a gift store inside visitors center that sells a large variety of nature and Michigan books. They also sell bottle water and pop ($1.00). Interactive displays, we were fascinated with how to read the rings on a tree stump. Friendly DNR employees and clean, indoor bathrooms. They also offer camping. Recreation Passport required or you can buy a day pass at the Visitors Center. Highly recommend! We spent a couple hours on the trail and in the buildings. Admittance fee is by donation.

We participated in the Kirtland's Warbler tour and had a great experience. The tour is offered by Hartwick Pines and Michigan Audubon. Craig was a terrific guide and made the entire tour enjoyable. Over the course of a couple hours at the site, we saw multiple Kirtland's Warblers and got some great photographs. Throughout the entire tour, Craig patiently answered the group's questions and helped birders of all experience levels look for and find the warbler.
Everyone in the tour group was friendly and full of enthusiasm. Throughout the tour, the group swapped stories, birding tips, and made sure everyone got to see the warbler. The group made this experience even more fun! We highly recommend this tour for birders and non-birders alike.
We came back the next day to tour the visitor center, the logging museum, and walk the trails. The staff at both locations were very friendly and helpful. The museum had interesting displays and we met a historical reenactor that taught us about the life of a logger. The trails are clearly marked and wind through beautiful forest. Definitely time well spent.

Beautiful state park with peaceful trails amongst the old growth white pines. Wonderful displays of the history of logging the white pines and other trees. A must see when traveling through Grayling!

Cabin has three bunk beds: one with a full mattress on the bottom, the rest are twin. It is also furnished with a table with benches and propane heat. Outside is a hand pump for water, a vault toilet, picnic table, a grill and fire ring. There is no electricity in the cabin. Secluded. Adjacent to Bright Lake.

Hello, is there a beach in the parking or somewhere for kids to swim in the summer time?
Michael D
Berryville, فيرجينيا67 مساهمة
Melissa...Harwick Pines is a forest park. Most of it is pine woods, but there are two small lakes there, which are used for canoeing more than anything else. I'm not sure if they allow swiming but you can call and ask. No swimming pools or large lakes with beaches.
Do you rent snow shoes to use in your park?
Michael D
Berryville, فيرجينيا67 مساهمة
The park does not rent out snowshoes, but I'm sure you can use them. Most of the park is a forest.
