We enjoyed an easy stroll through Hardwick Pines, although most was not pine trees. We arrived late and the visitor center was closed, but that didn't stop us. We took the Old Growth Forest trail, which was pleasantly paved through the forest. It took us around 25 minutes, but we are fast walkers.

This is a very nice state park here also we went directly to the loggers museum which was close to 430 on a Thursday but the machinery looks very nice and interesting there are a lot of hiking trails around here which look nice also and the visitor center must’ve just closed but the restroom was open and that looks very nice to we are not campers for sale but it looks like a very nice perk

Modernization done right is my description for our new fave Michigan campground . The newer full service sites and modern restrooms and shower house were added to to Hartwick pines in 1995. Almost all of those sites are pull throughs on wide, flat, paved pads. Easily accommodating everything from our little Tab 320 to the biggest of the big rigs. The lack of mature trees in the majority of the full service area is not of concern because the fish bone layout and spacing provides some outdoor dining and lounging privacy by placing left sides all facing the same direction thus sheltering site occupants on one side. Well placed trees now maturing will eventually add more privacy. But it is the older electric only and tent sites that have the shelter of large trees around them giving the feel of a pre-RV boom camp ground. Smaller vehicles and trailers able to camp without full service might consider these sites for a bit of camping nostalgia yet with the comfort of RV amenities. Large galvanized fire rings safely accommodate near bon fire sized camp fires. (On the yellow park check in phone at the camp ground office campers listen to a recorded fire safety and tree protection reminder.) Kudos to the designers of this camp groundnut. The central well maintained and clean shower house and restrooms are an easy walk from any site in the full service and electric only sites.
As for the rest of the park, the visitors center, logging museum, and hiking trails among the old growth trees added to our education in Michigan’s natural resources of Upper Peninsula’s copper and iron ore extraction and smelting and their importance to the industrial revolution’s need for raw materials.

It is a state park so you either need to have a parks passport (if you are a MI resident you should really get one when you register your car, it pays for itself if you visit a state park a couple of times) or pay to get in. It is located pretty close to the freeway and I stopped on the way back from the UP. I was there during Labor Day weekend on a nice day during the afternoon so it was fairly crowded, but not overly so. I stopped by the visitor center where I learned a few things in some interesting exhibits and then visited the logging museum and fomer CCC camp. And the highlight is the Old Growth forest. Hiked through the different trails in that part of the park (well marked/paved). Don't expect Red Wood style giant trees. But if you are person who has hiked alot in Michigan like myself I was amazed at how different the forest was. It was both really sad and yet really inspiring to learn that pretty much all of the forests I usually hike in are man made (bless the CCC and continued conservation and restoration efforts). A nice well maintained park (most state parks are) with the Old Growth forest and logging museum being standouts compared to other parks.

We stayed at two MI state parks and visited another two parks on a recent trip. All parks were well kept and camping with a motor home worked great. At Hartwick camp grounds, info said .25 mile trail to Bright/Glory lakes… it is closer to .5 miles.

Stop on the way to Mackinaw City. Was much better than a rest stop. Bathrooms were very clean. We learned something, got to stretch our legs, and used the picnic area to eat a packed lunch.

Last old growth forest in Michigan. If you do nothing else, walk the Old Growth Forest Trail. Beautiful, especially in the fall. Nice visitor center and there is a logging museum. Many other longer trails, a great campground, and 2 fishing lakes. Easy access of I-75.

Great place to camp or just visit. Trails, logging museum, chapel in the woods, visitors center, fishing lakes. The bathrooms and showers at the campground were so clean!

Cabin has three bunk beds: one with a full mattress on the bottom, the rest are twin. It is also furnished with a table with benches and propane heat. Outside is a hand pump for water, a vault toilet, picnic table, a grill and fire ring. There is no electricity in the cabin. Secluded. Adjacent to Bright Lake.

Hello, is there a beach in the parking or somewhere for kids to swim in the summer time?
Michael D
Berryville, فيرجينيا67 مساهمة
Melissa...Harwick Pines is a forest park. Most of it is pine woods, but there are two small lakes there, which are used for canoeing more than anything else. I'm not sure if they allow swiming but you can call and ask. No swimming pools or large lakes with beaches.
Do you rent snow shoes to use in your park?
Michael D

The park does not rent out snowshoes, but I'm sure you can use them. Most of the park is a forest.
