Go right after sunset and you'll be able to see them flying against the night sky. There were quite a few flying around the night we decided to go watch them.

My daughter and I checked out the Millie Mine Bat area (out of season to see bats) and then along the ridge of the hill to the viewing platform. It's a very nice walk and a heck of a view.
Check online for the dates that the bats are active. It's worth a stop even if they are not.

Spectacular views at sunset and the new bike trails are great! Only a few bats after the white nose syndrome decimated the colony. Great place to Mountain bike and take the dogs for a run.

Watch out for big predators tho! I live at the base of Millie Hill in Iron Mountain, MI. And 2 nights ago we had a Medium sized Black Bear stroll on down from the Hill for a little snack of cucumbers and Grapes from ny grape vine! Then last night a HUGE Grey Wolf walked dead center down EAST Fleshiem St. From the hill and staked Me and 3 other adults because he wanted a taste of my Red Bone Coon Hound! I screamed and yelled and stomped. Trying to scared him away, but he kept coming at me and Loki my dog! My husband had to chase him away after my 3rd and falled attempt to scare him! Dont get me wrong, this is a must see if your visiting Iron Mountain, but use caution please! There is a false sense of comfort one can get when they are in such a beautiful setting.

Spectacular scenic views and great educational markers about bats & local mining industry along delightful walking trails. Lovely! Our Google directions dropped us at a city park (E A Street) below the viewing deck. Stay on Park Ave a few more blocks & Look for Millie Hill Bat Cave Viewing Road.

Short hike along the route you can read about bats & Iron River history. There's a few trails if you want to take them too.

bats were out and flying by 8:30 PM. great picture taking spot with the amazing veiw.

We were lucky enough to visit this site on an evening when a gentleman was there that knew all about bats. He explained that the bats used to come out in droves at dusk but their population has dwindled due to a disease that is killing them off. We did see about a dozen bats fly out of the cage and fly over our heads. We also walked to the spot where you could overlook the city. It was beautiful.

Who would ever think of an attraction involving bats? Well this is exactly what this attraction is about. The Millie Mine, after it was closed, became the home to tens of thousands of bats. You may, and you may not, see any bats. I did not see any myself. But the site is very pleasant and with a short walk you can look down upon the city of Iron Mountain. The several informational plaques at the site contain a lot of very interesting information about bats. I enjoyed the venue and returned serveral times.

Dusk. The bats began to appear at 8:10 PM.
Not the cloud of bats I had hoped for, but singly. Very quick and quite silent. And very close. I think the closest I noticed was only 3 or 4 feet from me. Yes!
Get there enough before dusk to make the short trip to the overview platform.
Be sure to take a flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot as there are no lights along the path.
The mine opening is only a short walk up from the parking lot. Take the path to the right of the lot, near the handicapped spot.
Turn at the information signs. The opening is inside the chain-link fence.
Although there is a marked handicap parking spot, the path is NOT accessible: no railing, mostly gravel and grass, uphill.
