My friend and I went to an afternoon tea. The good: the veranda. The bad: Literally everything else. The staff were unprofessional and sloppy, the food seemed like it was picked up at the grocery story last week, and the menu was edited with pen instead of being re-printed. I felt like afterthought. This was literally the worst dining experience of my life. Please don't waste your money.

The best thing about Henderson Castle was that when we stayed (on a Sunday night) the place was pretty much empty. We were able to use the rooftop hot tub without any interruptions so that was nice. Here comes the negative. After we booked our room (5 nights before our stay) we decided to read reviews. I know, I know. Should have read them before hand. A very large majority of reviews are negative. So we called trying to cancel so we could find something better to do. No one picked up. Ever. We emailed. And after being told that we can only cancel 8 days before our reservation. We received no more replies to our email. So we decided to go and make the best of it anyway. At check in the front desk staff was okay. But seemed disinterested in her job and the guests. She showed us to our room where I had to point out the dirty cleaning rags on the floor to her. Shortly after that we met a member of the cleaning staff. She was dirty and disheveled looking. She wasn't wearing any shoes and was acting like she was on some kind of drugs. We stayed in the maple room. It was very small with the majority of the room being made up of the bathroom. Luckily my fiance and I are pretty thin. But if you're a little bigger or have any ailments that would prohibit you from fitting through tight spaces this is the wrong room. There's about a 6 inch gap between the bed and the wall that you have to squeeze through to get from one side of the room to the other. Some of the lights don't work and the "fountain" part of the jacuzzi tub does not work. After setting our bags down we decided to look around. We went up to the room where there's supposed to be a nice sitting area and bar. The bar was in pieces and there was construction trash and screws and nails littering the ground. Even by the hot tub where guests could be barefoot. The furniture was also in poor condition. During our time on the roof the housekeeper that I had mentioned before came up and asked us if we had any cigarettes. We went back down stairs. The entire place seemed to be in a state of disrepair but also like they're trying to cheaply cover it up. We went outside and the grounds were also pretty bad. The hot tub in the lawn was dirty. The shed were they seem too keep all of their maintenance equipment was falling apart and had junk laying all around the outside of it. There were plants laying all round still with their pots and tags from the greenhouse they were bought from. No one had the time to plant them?
Since there's not really anything to do at the castle, we walked around downtown Kalamazoo. Which is fine but I live here so I don't have much to say since I've done that 1000 times. We went elsewhere for dinner since the reviews for the castles food were not good. We came back to the castle and enjoyed our time in the hot tub for an hour. When we went back to the room to settle in I turned on the jacuzzi tub and it took nearly an hour for it to fill up. Then I noticed hairs from the previous guest on the wall and promptly got out of the tub. There's not really any amenities in the room and there's no phone. So if you need anything you need to walk down to the front desk. And if you need anything after 10 pm you are out of luck. The castle is completely unstaffed at night. The bed was fine and there is a small smart tv in the maple room. The next morning I went to make coffee. The coffee maker wasn't plugged in and I had to fish the plug out from behind the fake fireplace in the room. Once I finally had a cup of coffee made, I searched through the sugar caddie. There was no sugar, creamer, sweeteners, or stir sticks. The only thing in there was nondairy creamer. I'm have no problem drinking black coffee so I wasn't too upset but the coffee was really bad. We decided to skip the complementary breakfast and left. Not worth $212. I would not recommend this place to anyone and will not be staying again.

Very friendly welcome, great assistance, good location close to downtown, comes with parking facilities.
The venue itself reminds of a castle, it is very dark from the inside and feels like walking through a museum with lots of interesting decorative details and furniture.
The room was definitely something different then your usual hotel room.
Equipped with old furniture showing lots of wear and tear it hosts the bed, a desk, a shower tub and the sink all in one room.
Only the toilet was in a tiny separate room under angled walls.
The bathtub - as part of the bedroom - has no shower curtain or anything to keep the water from splashing all over the place.
The sink is also under an angled wall, so no mirror. The only mirror was by the door in the darkest corner of the room. So I left out earlier to put on my make up in the car.
Unfortunately, not all bulbs were working which made the room even darker.
A very unique feature was an opening in the wall the size of a Kellogg’s box. It was part of a window frame that was missing the glass and had partially been covered with wood.
The bed had 2 thick mattresses on too of each other which made it difficult to get in due to the height. The desk hosted an open glass container with water and 2 glasses, and a Keurig. No fridge.
The room was not very clean. I was glad I had flip flops to wear in the bathtub (which made the room a “spa bathroom” because it had jets) standing up taking a shower. No way I would knee down or worse sat down with my blank behind in the dirt.
The sheets were crinkled and had stains.
The towels had an intense musky smell that you get when folded away still damp.
The overall given impression of the entire property would make you immediately think abandoned haunted house. The fact that the property gets locked over night allows your imagination to go all different directions. All of the staff leaves in the evening and you are “on your own”.
If you look for a convenient hotel room with the expected amenities, this place is not for you.
If you are looking for something very unique this is your venue!

Buyer Beware! What a rip off! They canceled the event and NEVER reimbursed me! I had to go thru PayPal to and file a dispute. They do not communicate when I reached out to them multiple times. I have heard great things ~However my experience has been terrible. Buyer BEWARE!

It is so sad that a beautiful historical building has such a nasty reputation. I don't even know where to start. Unfortunately, I could not even get someone to answer their phones and/or return a call. I finally went down there where I was greeted by some very young rude girls who basically made my appointment then proceeded to cancel it 2 days later. What really bothers me are the cameras that are all over even where people are changing. My daughter was there changing for their hot tub and noticed them. This place definitely needs some new customer service and updating. Do not waste your time or money!

We had a room in the cottage. We left and the handle to the door came off, it was about 11:30 at night as we were hanging with another couple, we went to the main house and called the night person. They had not one tool to get us back into our room. Our medications, clothes, purse, phones, and all of our money were in that room. They put us in a room with an electric heater. We were both fine when we tried to lay down to try to sleep, within an hour, we were both feeling VERY SICK. (No, we were not drunk). My husband was puking all night, and we both suffered severe headaches. I was so nauseous and my head hurt so badly, I was crying to go home or to leave, but we couldn't, there was no way to leave!! We had scheduled massages for the morning, but when we finally heard people in the lobby, (we didn't sleep at all), we went to cancel our massages because we were both physically ill, and we found someone to finally open our door. We got our stuff and just headed home. By the time we made it home, I was much better. And so was my husband. We tried calling and emailing and messaging, for 3 weeks now, and not one call back or response to reimburse us for the worst night ever. Being a business owner myself, I would never leave a bad review, but this place is seriously the worst and we tried very hard to resolve it respectfully and correctly.

*Restaurant* This place blows! They took way too long to bring the food (an hour for French toast), the yogurt was sour, the food was not good, and what was expected to be a multiple course meal came out as 4 pieces of French toast that I couldn’t cut with my fork and knife?! And then, Matt was pretty unhelpful but like in an awkward and professional way. I’d rather buy 25 mcchickens and die of heart failure

This hotel must not be doing good financially as they have taken our money for a hotel reservation we made early, and then when we had to cancel due to a wedding being cancelled, they ignore our calls for a refund. They owe us over $750 and they will not take a call from us or return a voicemail. The hotel was not even supposed to of taken an early payment as it was "pay on arrival." We cancelled about two months prior to our reservation. TERRIBLE experience.

First, let me focus on what was good about my stay. We arrived at 3PM on a day when an unseasonal 10" snowfall was coming down and found the entire staff helpful and friendly. In the morning one staffer actually went out and shoveled the snow from around my car so we could get out. The entire place was clean and well maintaned, and we loved hearing about the history. Considered the second most haunted place in Michigan we may have even had a visit from "The Lady in White" during the night when we found our bathroom light on in the morning even though we are positive it was off when we went to sleep.
However, even though I twice emailed about dinner reservations at the Chop House on premises I got no reply and when I asked at check-in about it I was told they didn't take dinner reservations on nights (like this one) when the were hosting a murder mystery dinner. The helpful desk clerk said due to the weather she wasn't going to make us leave to eat, and made arrangements for us to participate in the murder mystery. It was OK, but the menu was far short of what we could have ordered on our own, and since other participants were in costume (mystery was set in the 1920's) we really didn't fit in. This could have been avoided if someone had answered the emails.
The biggest problem, however, was the temperature in our room. Although ours (The French Room) was described by our tour guide as their warmest (apparently the marble floors used to be heated), the only time we were warm was in bed beneath the extra blankets the staff fetched us. There were three large, 125 year old, windows that leaked cold air, and a marble floor that radiated that cold. After check-in we had three hours to kill before dinner. We located a movie on Amazon Prime and settled in to watch it on the tiny TV provided. It wasn't long until we put on our winter coats, but by dinner time I was actually shivering from cold. We do't know the exact termperature, but we do know it below 60 degrees. There is no central heat in this Castle, and the small electric heater they provided was entirely inadequate. When the staff brought in a second and let it run during dinner we were hopeful it would take the chill off by bedtime, but it make no discernable difference.
I was disappointed by the breakfast. Any other B&B where I have stayed fed us very well. Here I got a bowl of cereai and a little fruit. Anything more substantial was at a healthy additional charge. Your local chain motel provides a better one.
My advice: don't stay here in winter unless you get one of rooms with heated marble floors. Another couple remarked to us their room was also cold, but tolerable. However, they didn't have any windows. Since there is no central air conditioning either, I suspect the same problem in reverse in the summer. The Castle is an interesting place, but I think you could be a lot more comfortable for a lot less money somewhere else.

I love historic homes and this one is a gem. Absolutely beautiful in every way. Except for the owner/manager of this hotel Rooms are not well maintained. We had four rooms in our party so I looked at all of them. Bed linen was from the 1980’s. All of the rooms. Dirty and grungy looking. Single towel per person. Decor from the 80’s. Do not expect a lot from tho hotel. We booked with the hotel, $275. Other sites had rooms listed at $110.

The rate was about $150 dollars a night. As I mentioned on my review the restaurant was not open the night we stayed. I believe it is opened Thurs-Sat. We looked in and it was very elegant. Might want check the website for the most accurate info.

This is a comment, not a question. Just the fact that the owner copy and pastes dismissive and rude comments to each customer is disgusting. You truly have no management skills. For this reason I will certainly never try this place. Your copied posts don't even always apply to the people you are replying to! Someone who had their long term reservation cancelled damn sure deserves a true apology. I am happy to know this is not a place that values their customers. The replies are horribly inappropriate and is unthinkable to anyone with any real management skills.

You could not be more correct - the owner is arrogant and thinks he does no wrong. He never addresses actual complaints, he just brags about how the business is growing and how hard his staff tries. I stayed for one night two years ago with family members. Total cost was $400 including the meal and tour. It was a horrible experience. From the reviews posted it seems guests either get really lucky and have a good experience or they are very, very disappointed, as I was.

I have driven by the "Castle" and enjoy the looks of this building. Have considered staying here for a weekend trip, wife and I enjoy B & B stays. So today I am reading the reviews and most seem pretty positive, with a few negative reviews thrown in. After reading the first review I was pretty impressed that the owners responded to a negative review. So I thought they were interested in their image and cared for their customers.
But after reading a few more reviews, I noticed that the personal response from the owners was the same as before. Matter of fact, all the responses are just one that has been copied and pasted to each posting. No personal attention to the reviews left by their customers. The one where they wouldn't take care of the mother who purchased the Guest House 7 months in advance blew my mind. How could a professional B&B cancel a reservation made that far in advance on such short notice. I find that after reading these reviews, I will not be staying there. Things will have to change before I try spending a weekend here. It's too bad, love the looks of the place and was looking forward to an enjoyable stay.

I personally would not ever deal with them again.. Beautiful castle but daughter's stay there on her honeymoon was a nightmare - no compensation was offered and the reception service was Ridiculous to say the least......not worth it
