‪This tour of the old rail ferry is truly a bargain. Authentic period steamer that has one of the best planned guided tours I've ever been on. If you spend any time in Manistee you must visit this museum. ‬

‪Stumbled across the listing on Air b-n-b, and couldn't believe it. I'd driven past just the previous week ... wow, that's a big boat ... wait, it's a B&B as well?!? I was thinking about doing an impromptu weekend jaunt with a couple of daytime stops, so finding this overnight made the trip happen.
The staterooms have all the appearance of an early-century steamship. Original woodwork and fixtures. I kept expecting the scene to shift to black & white, and nicely-dressed travelers to appear ...
The single bunks comfortably fit someone who's not too tall. (A fellow guest, who was tall enough to dodge the hanging cutlery in the galley, said he'd had to sleep with his knees bent. Upon my departure, I looked in all the vacant staterooms -- a couple of them have slightly wider beds. If you are tall, ask about that.)
I couldn't figure out the light switch -- it's behind the fixture, up high. The night purser showed me. As others have stated, there's no A/C. My room fan did the job.
Upon asking, I was told that the current caretakers -- a group of volunteers -- didn't change out anything. There were a few pieces, like the butcher block in the galley, that were sourced after docking here. Design elements include original signage, floor plan pictures, and floating ship pictures. If you're interested in the 20th century, you could spend quite some time studying the photos and general ambiance. I especially enjoyed looking in the officers' dining room, with the table all set, and the original kitchen spaces. (Ignore the microwave.) They've added original food packages like oatmeal, sacks of potatoes, and utensils. And of course, you can climb the steps to the pilot house and enjoy a fabulous view. (Pro tip: if you're wearing slide-on footwear, tread carefully. I got to thinking about the challenge of retrieving a sandal from the water ...)
What's really fun: in the lounge areas are copies of 1940s - 50s magazines including those staples Reader's Digest and National Geographic. There's a replica radio playing Big Band dance tunes, a couple of tables with jigsaw puzzles, vintage luggage arranged as if ready for a porter to deliver to the dock.
Apparently the water pipes didn't survive as well as the interior; they said for a while there was no running water on the boat. Now there is, with modern water lines. There's some hefty-looking electrical service as well. I was unable to locate my USB charger, and the purser graciously located a spare (good thing, as I had more photos to shoot).
Breakfast: self serve, lots of pastries, cereal, fruit, and yogurt. Make-your-own coffee and tea.
On my visit, a volunteer was painting the handrails and deck outside. Presumably this is a never-ending task.
All the B&B proceeds go back to the boat upkeep. It's also available for special events, like smaller weddings.

They're holding an anniversary event:

90th Anniversary Celebration

I sure have missed writing reviews. This was my first overnight venture since early March 2020.‬

‪Our men's book group decided to meet on this ship because the books being discussed were of a nautical nature. The volunteers who guided us through the ship were very knowledgeable about the boat and the shipping history on the great lakes. There is a lot of steps and stairs so it is not handicap accessible.‬

‪The stay on the SS City of Milwaukee was a lot of fun. We stayed in the 4 Boys room with a bunk for each of us. Beds were very comfortable. A safety rail on the bunks for kids would be amazing(although we understand it would likely need to be custom). The kids had a ton of fun. The weather was great. And there were a ton of board games to play. The kids had fun running around (we did get scolded for kids running). That is a little difficult for kids to hold all the energy in. Especially when it’s so beautiful outside.

Overall, we had a great experience. And the kids had a great experience. Highly recommend. We plan to go again.‬

‪First time here and they turn it into a haunted ship. We took a group of 8 early october, it was a lot of fun. The line wasn't too long, I heard it gets longer closer to Halloween. This was a fun trip now I need to go back and see it in the light and get a normal tour.‬

‪My father-in-law was stationed aboard the Acacia. It was well worth the drive from Cleveland, OH for a visit. We spent the night on the Milwaukee. I would recommend adding this adventure to your bucket list. The Milwaukee is 87 years old and well worth the visit. Keep in mind, she is a museum. So if spending the night, this is not a high-end hotel. This is a B&B. Touring this ship one can only try an grasp this vessel hauling 30-32 loaded rail car. The Acacia is a Coast Guard ship my 87 year-old father-in-law served aboard. He spent hours walking this vessel. The staff is very helpful, knowledgeable and make every attempt to make your visit comfortable.‬

Thank you for the kind words. It is always a treat for the staff to meet with former crew or their descendants of either ship. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again.

‪This was extrememly interesting and to learn more of the importance of rail car ferries was fasinating for those that like history and a better understanding of the area, it's early industries, and mode of transportation. It is remarkable to have this and to tour is an opportunity to look back in time. I've heard too that the the Halloween display is amazing!‬

‪We happened to see this listed in one of the local news flyers that are available in the stores and restaurants in Manistee. We decided it would be fun to walk through. The tour guide was so knowledgeable about the boat and any questions asked. I can't believe they still have people staying as a B&B in it! It was a fun experience. There are ladders and steps to climb, but we managed just fine. We also paid to self-tour the Coast Guard Cutter beside it and while it was good, I didn't learn as much without a guide to explain things. If you are passing through, take the time to see the SS City of Milwaukee! It is worth the $10 for the tour. ‬
