‪Either you go for a long hike to reach Ranimahal or you drive over there, even busses are running. The former king builded this palace for his whife after she passed away - nowadays a police station calles this place it's home. Completely in white, next to Khali Ghandaki the "Nepali Taj Mahal" is absolutely beautiful and worth a visit.
By the way: Opposite you'll find a place to stay overnight - sleep in cosy tents and have a beach party! ‬

‪Rani Mahal, the Taj Mahal of Nepal, Symbol of LOVE, is located in the banks of Kali Gandaki River in Palpa district of Nepal. This palace was constructed by General Khadga Samsher Rana JBR in 1893. In 1887 General Khadga Samsher Rana was forced to drop his royal titles and was sent to Palpa-Gauda as the Western Commander in Chief of Nepal. At Palpa-Gauda in 1892 Khadga Shumsher's beloved youngest wife Tej Kumari Devi died and within a year Khadga built a palace and named after his wife as Rani Mahal (Literary translates as Queens Palace). The palace was built at the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, between Syangja and Palpa. Situated at the distance of 18 km from Tansen, the palace looks attractive sitting on a massive rock at a secluded and a quiet place. There are a dozen of rooms, beautiful ponds, a temple, wonderful garden surrounding the area, guest rooms, a kitchen etc. in the palace. Since the palace was built on the edge of the jungle, the jungle was also named as Rani Ban (queen’s jungle) and the stairs leading to the river as Rani Ghat. The river also possesses a religious importance as it is believed that touching the water of the river provides salvation to any sinners. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Tansen Bazaar, sitting on the riverbank with the most elegant color, a neo-classic art and architecture lies the eye catching palace where every details project the ounce of love. The forests, the ponds, the stair cases and the river banks, everything embodies the affection of Khadga Shumsher towards his late wife. Rani Mahal looks magical, it is a jewel of Palpa and a true epitome of love. Thus next time you visit Palpa, do not forget to hike down from Tansen towards the bank of Kaligandaki to witness this untouched beauty resting peacefully on the lap of a forest symbolizing love and devotion Currently, there is motorable road to Rani Mahal and very few buses run from Tansen to Ranimahal.

Alles in allem äußerst enttäuschend‬

‪We had out driver take us half way down to the Palace but it was still a little bit of a hike from there. It is hard to comprehend that such a beautiful building just sits there on the edge of the river with no one residing in it! Not much to see other than the Palace but worth it for a half day trek.‬

‪We were a little confused about what the actual route was to Ranighat. GETUP is reported to sell a guide/map, but when we went the guy said there was none and we should just follow Rani Mahal Road on Google maps. So we just took the path starting from near Hotel Srinagar, using maps.me to navigate. It was an easy to follow route once we got onto Rani Mahal Road. Lots of friendly locals and beautiful scenery on the hike. A few shops were selling water/snacks along the way. All downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. The palace is a cool sight from the outside, although it is empty. There was a restaurant selling noodles and one selling dahl baht. Took us 3 hours down, 2 hours to get halfway back up, then some locals gave us a lift the rest of the way up. Highly recommended day trip from Tansen!‬

‪By 7am we were out the door to hike to Ranigaut aka Ranimahal. It was completely downhill on the way there and likewise uphill on the return. The path began just a short distance from where we were staying in Tansen. Thankfully our friend who speaks Nepali pretty much knew what he was doing and when he wasn’t sure about the unmarked path he asked the villagers which way to go. We reached Ranigaut by 9:30am after a stop for chai (milk tea w sugar, cardamom) x20min just before “fishing resort”-apparently the older gentleman that owns quite a bit of the land on that hill. We passed through quite a few villages and saw cows, goats, buffalo, ladies carrying pails of water held in baskets strapped across their foreheads, ladies washing clothes at the public taps, freshly painted houses (just after holiday season), several chai stands, lotsa mopeds/motorcycles and vans (but not another single hiker) full of folks headed to Ranigaut. Thanks to our friend we took a few shortcut paths that were quite steep/slippery but most of the way we were on either gravel or mud roads. When we got to the bottom we first ordered our dal bhat (telling them we'd be ready to eat in 1h) and we went to explore. We hopped over a stream to get to the big suspension bridge and walked across. The bridge was in decent shape. Folks were camping on the ranigaut side and the other side of the Kali Gandaki river. Not much to do on the other side of the river so we came back and went to explore the palace that king built for his wife in 1890s. it was rubble by end of 20th c and its been restored in last ?10y. it’s a big empty open-air palace that we quickly toured. There were nice views of the river, mountains, valley, beaches, bridge. We ate tasty dal bhat (Rs530 for 3 people)- and it’s all you can eat (typical for Nepali restaurant dal bhat). It took a while to prepare but was worth it…we hung out around Ranigaut for ~1h 40min and then we headed back UP the trail…and it was pretty hot/sunny. We made it back up in ~2h 15min (faster than on the way down- prob bc we didn’t stop for tea and we didn’t go so slow on the slippery rocks going up). we were worn out and had earned our showers. Our watch said we went 15.6mi and 31,054 steps. Our friend has done this with their kids, but most folks with kids (and there were lotsa school children there) took jeeps down/back.‬

‪I have been planning to go to Ranighat and see Ranimahal and surrounding since long but was not possible due to time limitation. At that time, it was only possible to walk for at least 3 hours or so but now car can reach in about 30 minutes, which was great. Spend couple of hours and visited Rani Mahal (Queen's Palace) from each corner and loved it. The building has been recently renovated and painted so it looks beautiful. However sad to see that there was no one except two of us who was visiting at that point of time. I think, more promotion and increased facility to be well considered by local government and the tourist department. Ensuring regular public transportation, some shops and restaurants around will be really useful. This is such a beautiful place on the bank of Kali Gandaki and gives truly mesmerizing view. One can hire a car in Tansen and reach easily - avoid raining season since the road may be damaged.

A must to visit place and must be promoted widely. ‬
