Wow! Places, people, industry, mining and shipping process, product all explained beautifully in this museum. Must visit in copper country up here in the UP. What a learning experience!

This is easily a Michigan gem. We have visited before and always enjoy it. Admission is free— donations appreciated. The museum is part of DNR.

This was a self guided free tour. We did this on our last day but should have done this on our 1st or 2nd day because the museum puts the pieces of the area together. Being a visitor to the area, I dint know why it’s called “pig iron”, nor what those large ships were bringing in to the area, why there were so many train tracks, and why the Reston lakeshore blvd. was named the “iron bar”. This hidden gem of a museum pieces all this together, so when we look back on our trip, we now k ow what we were looking at and why it’s exists. This museum teaches visitors about the area. Not only about iron, but about the Indians that lived there too. The artifacts in the museum were very interesting. I don’t have kids and found it fascinating myself. This is a must see if visiting the area and I would do it in the beginning of your trip so you know what your looking at when you see those big ships docking s as t night. The museum puts all the pieces together of the area around it. It’s very interesting!

Very nice museum. Goodwill donation payment. Staff was friendly and helpful. Beautiful valley area with walking trails. Very nice gift shop with a large selection of books and Yooper items.

Located in the forest on the site of the original mines, this super cool museum is an absolute gem. This is a gorgeous facility. So much information about the people and the hard work that went into making the mines - and the Upper Peninsula - into what it is today. Admission is free but there is a donation box. You truly do have to admire those who came before us.

Highly recommend if you are in to mining. Offers a lot of history on Michingan's many mining operations in the area.

We were surprised by what a nice museum this was. It included a short educational movie, and many exhibits. And it was free!

Very well-done place. Great displays. Would have liked to see more on the labor issues involved in the early century, but this is sponsored by the mining industry. Great place though. All ages would have a great time here.

My aunt took me to visit this museum, and it was really well-done! Excellent displays that were rich in history and details. I didn't get a chance to see the whole place since we arrived very near the closing hour. However, my aunt's husband has an exhibit there from his time as a geologist at the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, so the museum person kindly let us stay after hours. This gesture was incredibly gracious and meant a great deal to my 88 year old aunt.
I knew very little about the iron industry in the Upper Peninsula and as well as the impact on national and global manufacturing, but I walked away much more knowledgeable. I think this is well-worth a visit.
