The area of the trail around campsites 10 to 11 is absolutely beautiful! I would definitely recommend those sites. We stayed at campsite 18 at the end of a loop hike (Lake of the Clouds, west 8 miles on the Big Carp River trail, east 9 miles on Lake Superior trail). Our site was also beautiful, and very secluded, with a large shoreline, fire pit area, and ample tent area a walk away from the main trail. 18 could be good for an overnight trip, as the hike in from Lake Superior trailhead isn't bad. Loved that there were no bugs on our trip! A *lot* of flooding throughout pieces of the trail not near the shoreline, though, that made this a difficult hike. Reservation requirements mean you will get the site you want, but it may be worth it to wait and see what the weather and conditions will be before you reserve.

This is a rugged trail, that pays off big in views of Lake Superior. If you like hiking, would like to see the lake, and even camp along it--this is the trail. Be in good shape
and be willing to devote some time. And--have your camera for lots of great shots

First of all, I hiked only half of the trail, from the road southwest to the Big Carp River. Secondly, I hiked in mid-August when the trail was fairly dry. The trail is a bit misleading in that it really doesn't hug the shore much. For that matter, you can't even see the lake much of the time. When you do finally get to the shore, it is rocky not sandy. Still, a nice trail. There was a bit of a breeze of the lake so the bugs were minimal - never even put on any spray. The last time I hiked the Porkies was in June and what a difference two months makes in terms of bugs. I'll never go back to the Porkies in June. You need head nets then. There was a bad storm last month and the trail had many blowdowns.

I will preface this review with ultimate respect for Mother Nature and the other reviewers who gave this trail a 5 out of 5. My boyfriend and I just completed this trail this past weekend and rate it a 2 based on our unfortunate experience of having to traverse it in the rainy season - however, this was the optimal time for us to go given our work situations and time off. We are avid hikers and came prepared with plenty of rain gear and it was much needed. The hike along the shoreline over rocks was beautiful and unique but obviously a little rough going - I would highly recommend utilizing trekking poles or at least a walking stick for better balance and point of contact. We actually did a loop from Big Carp Trail that hooked into this trail and was relatively smooth going from that intersection until about a mile in when the majority of the rest of the trail was all swamp. The blue blazes marked the path that was no longer a path but a solid ongoing river of about ankle high water so travel time was significantly reduced - much of the time we were forced to trek through the forest near the trail trying to find solid footing. Our Merrill hiking boots held up beautifully but I would also recommend Goretex Gators since the water on the trail was so high in some places that it seeping into our boots was inevitable. Even with weather reports stating only a light shower at 2:00 PM we had the joy of hiking the last 4 or so miles in the pouring rain - again, a humbling experience to always be prepared for any type of weather. A lot of ups and downs so hill conditioning is a must - of course for us it may have just seemed that way with the weather conditions and our slow-going in trying to find good footing. I am sure this trail is really beautiful later in the year when it is drier and sunnier and we would love to revisit it.

It is a beautiful trail. Sometimes you hike right on the beach, sometimes in the forest. There are several river crossings. The trail is dotted with backcountry campsites right on the shore, and a few rustic cabins. Cabins need to be reserved, and you will need a key from the information center. They are furnished with bunk beds, table, chairs, cupboards, few basic cooking utensils, and an axe to chop wood. We hiked from Little Carp River to the parking by Lake of the Clouds and it took us about 5,5 hrs with 1 short break. After the rain the trail can be very muddy, waterproof hiking boots above the ankle are a must not a convenience.

Two of us, about 70, and friends for more than half those years had a great hike today. Started from Speakers Trail on the South Boundary Road, hiked to the Lake Superior Trail that took us to the Presque Isle Scenic Area. Nice hike through virgin forests of mainly Hemlock. Three places where we had to go down and across the river and back up. We are not regular hikers but we did it with relative ease.
The river and falls at Presque Isle was outstanding. After crossing the river in the trail we went south on the western side to see all of the falls. Then walked back the road to the car. About 10 miles and well worth it.

How can we get back to our car without backtracking on the trail?
