This is an awesome way to explore the area on bike! Family friendly & relatively flat, You can rent bikes in Petoskey or Harbor Springs.

We took the trails from Petoskey to Charlevoix one day, 40 miles r.t., then to harbor springs the next day. Well maintained, beautiful scenery. A great way to have fun.

Trail starts just past historic Bay View; some of trail is close to busy highway & much traffic. We learned from a local there was a way to bypass that, which made the return trip from Harbor Springs much more enjoyable. Would suggest that information be posted somewhere for all.

A very smooth picturesque bike ride along lake Michigan however there was a washout about a year ago and it is still not repaired. You get detoured right along US31 with busy traffic. If I wanted to ride in busy traffic I could do it at home.

An excelent pathway along the lake and very near to it. The path is used for running walking and riding an has many places to rest and WC.

We walked the wheel way in both directions from the harbor in Petoskey. It’s a nice walk along Lake Michigan with excellent views. Going north toward Harbor Springs you can look for Petoskey stones at Petoskey State Park Beach.

every local tourist brochure shows happy bikers whizzing along, the bright blue waters almost lapping at their feet.
And there are a couple of places that almost happens, but don't be fooled. For the vast majority of the route, this trail follows the major road linking these communities, often on what are essentially sidewalks.
It gets worse!
The road is directly along one side and all sorts of businesses and residences are on the other. Linking them are hundreds of driveways, each one with two little bumps and many with little octagonal STOP signs. Does that ever get tiresome!
If you just want to tootle around town, it's probably good enough, but if you bike with any seriousness, even a little, teeny bit, just about any road out of town is better.

We parked in Sunset Park in Petoskey and headed to Harbor Springs. In order to avoid the airport and the noise of busy roads, turn down Beach Road and follow this quiet road all the way to the delightful town of Harbor Springs. You will pass lovely homes and waterfront views. There are many eateries to choose from in Harbor Springs before you head back to your starting point.

Adding to my last comment, depending where you stay along the Traverse bay you can access the path.
Petosky has a nice park area where you can drive up and park for free to get onto the path. Close to water also for nice scenery.
Is there any kind of service that will take you and your bikes to a starting point, or pick you and your bikes up at a ending point to shuttle you back to your vehicle ?

Hello! Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I am not aware of a service that provides a shuttle. You can rent bicycles from businesses right on the path, with an available parking lot for your vehicle. I suggest 'mapping' your route, especially the return. I have been ambitious and rode further than my legs appreciated-to realize the return was uphill.

Was wondering how hilly the trail is? Also, how steep are the hills?

On the part of the trail we were on, there was a slight down hill going from the parking area towards Harbor Springs and then a big downhill, but short, into Harbor springs the way we went so you would have to go up those going back. We went back along the harbor so did not have that hill. The road later came out back to the bike trail.

Looking to have a bike trip in late Sept. where can we stay (maybe rent a condo or cottage) for 4 to 6 people) so we can get right on the trail from our lodging?

When we biked in August, we stayed at the Terrace Inn in Bay View and rode through Bay View over to the light at Kilwin's crossing US 31 and picked up the trail just behind Kilwin's. That way you can travel west toward Charlevoix or east toward Harbor Springs.

Hello,
Out family is planning a trip to Little Traverse Wheelway. We noticed that there is a picture of a small waterfall. Does anyone know the approximate location of this waterfall within the Wheelway (e.g. near Charlevoix, Bay Harbor, Petoskey, Harbor Springs)? Thanks.

It is located in Bayfront Park just below the city of the Petoskey. Great place for picnics and enjoying the waterfront.

What is the best way to take this trail? We can only handle about 15 Miles total?

We loved starting out in the state park then biking to Harbor Springs. It's about 14 miles round trip if you include pedaling around sightseeing. There are several places to stop and take a break in Harbor Springs by the marina. See my review for an optional route through a nature preserve. It is quiet and less traveled and good part of it runs along the lakeshore. From the park to downtown Petoskey is also a beautiful trail and is about 8 miles round trip. There are a few bike racks in town to park and go shopping or out to eat.

We are planning on staying in Petoskey. Would like to bike day one from Charlovoix to Petoskey and day two Petoskey to Harbor Springs. We will bring out own bikes and will only have one car. How can we get to Charlevoix on day one? Will leave our car in Petoskey

You can. From downtown Petoseky to downtown Charlevoix it is about 17 miles one way. Mostly flat with two major hills. One way to cut the distance is to go to East Park about 3 or 4 miles outside of Petoskey towards Charlevoix and start there. U.S. 31 follows the trail so almost anyplace along there where there is a rest area or park works.
