I scheduled my visit for a Tuesday in the middle of July. That means planning accommodations in Port Huron and a follow up to the Fort Gratiot Light station.
County parks are welcoming visitors gratis this summer. There is a BlueWater.org website I guess but I just called that number one morning and a lady answered the phone and we chatted for 30 minutes at least. She will answer all your questions about Port Huron tourism, and she was the one who reminded me to visit the light ship.
The exhibit is in a city park. There are porta potties, parking, sounds like live music I'm not kidding, kids baseball games going on, a paved walkway along the river's edge that literally goes for miles.
Huron lightship is a genuine restored 1920 ship and you have to go inside to go back to see how those sailors lived for weeks at a time. This little steamer had separate sleeping rooms and a bunk room I totaled crew of about 7 maybe. You can climb steep iron ladders to the top open deck, and climb down to the engine room. It's all original steel and iron packed in tight, from another time.
The volunteer tour guides were fantastic. Without volunteers these exhibits would not be able to open.
They have a nice little gift shop on board and you can buy neat stuff or leave a donation to keep this ship afloat.
Fritomann highly recommends this tour.

We visited this on a rainy cold day and we were so glad we did. We were greeted as we entered and a guide took us throughout the lightship and told us EVERYTHING! Very informative! We even got to sound the airhorn at a passing vessel after THEY saluted us! Even as senior citizens we found this a really cool thing to do!

I'm a big fan of both museum ships and lighthouses, so this is right in my wheelhouse. The boat is in great shape and it looks great in photos. The history is very interesting and it's impressive that someone had the foresight to save it. It's a fun visit in an excellent location along the boardwalk.

Our tour guide, Jerry, was awesome. He explained so much about the ship and the responsibilities of the lightships. Very knowledgeable and interesting fella! Loved all the history and beautiful views. Definitely one of our favorite stops!

way over priced. Not worth 10$ a person to walk around a old smelly boat. It was ok to look at and I learned a few things.. but not worth the money for a family.

A step back in time before automation replaced manpower. Not sure if I could have lived under the conditions these men did. Well worth visiting if interested in maritime history

The Huron Lightship Museum is one of the 4 museums tied into the city of Port Huron along the beautiful river walk part of the city. The ship itself while not being all the large does have a nice walk through tour that shows a decent side of the history of this landmark. The views itself of the ship are beautiful as well as the St Clair River as well.

We had a great tour of the lightship. Our guide was knowledgeable about all aspects of the ship. We had so many questions and he answered them all that we went over the time that the ship was open. He never pushed us to leave.

Visited early afternoon on a Monday. Few visitors gave us a lot of time to look around and ask questions to a knowledgeable guide. Well, a couple hours later, blowing the horn at a passing freighter and learning more than a class of maritime history in college made for an excellent day.
