I felt very welcoming inside the birdhouse. Personally I never saw myself going here but my family insisted. I'm very glad they made me go. BEST DAY OF MY LFE! Definitely would visit again in the future.

The artwork here is very unique and needs to be seen up close and personal. Have visited on multiple occasions and still enjoy coming back.

What an incredible piece of history! Kudos to the township and park department for maintaining such a treasure. Built in the 19th century and still a wonder! Herb McCourtie was a very generous man AND must have had a huge streak of fun in him to want to create these detailed concrete trees and bridges to look like wood. Of course, it helped that his business was Concrete! And HUGE beautiful birdhouses that accommodate over 200 birds. Do read up on the history prior to visiting as it will enrich the time you spend here.

A colleague at work recommended McCourtie Park several years ago, and I finally got around to visiting this June. The cement bridges are carved to look just like wood! They are fun to ramble across. Entrance was free. Parking was along the road. It is just off US 12. I was unable to find a map, so I don't think I saw all the bridges, but I had a good time.

The W. H. L. McCourtie Estate, originally called Aiden Lair and now known as McCourtie Park, is a recreational park located at 10426 South Jackson Road (at US 12) in Somerset Center, Michigan. McCourtie made a fortune in the oil business in Texas and founded his own cement company. In the 1920s, McCourtie returned to Somerset Center and in 1924 he purchased the family home and surrounding property and turned it into "Aiden Lair," a community center where he hosted multiple events. He continued hosting free community events well into the Great Depression.[2] McCourtie also hosted out-of-town luminaries; it is known that Henry Ford was a visitor to Aiden Lair.Around 1930, McCourtie hired two itinerant Mexican artisans, George Cardoso and Ralph Corona, to build 17 concrete bridges at Aiden Lair,[2] spanning the winding stream that flowed through the property.[6] Cardoso and Corona used a technique known as el trabejo rustico (known in French as faux bois), a Mexican folk art tradition where wet concrete is sculpted to look like wood.
This is a great place to take a stroll or have a picnic if you happen to be in the area. Don't miss the giant birdhouse. Sadly, the tavern is not open

I finally got to visit this park and WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED !! A nice park to just take a stroll or picnic. The history of McCourtie is quite interesting and worth reading about. The cement bridges and benches are AMAZING !!

This park is clean, well cared for, and would give something enjoyable to people of all ages. It can show how people entertained themselves in the past and provides plenty of room to run. I’m sure we will return here again.

Driven past but never stopped many times— so glad we did. What a unique place! We had a great time searching for all of the bridges and stumbling up other concrete treasures!

What an awesome park! The concrete "wooden" bridges are whimsical and provided great subjects for a photography shoot. There's plenty of room to walk your dogs, walk along a stream, picnic, read under a tree, or catch a little of Jackson's history. If there is one thing I could to to improve the park, it would be to rid it of mosquitoes in summer -- but that's true of most of Michigan!

Is there a map of the park anywhere on-line? Neither of us can walk very far and I wanted to park near a few of the structures of historic plaques.

To really see the sculptures you do have to walk a fair amount. There are several internet sites that can give you more informaiton.

I've never seen anything prohibiting them. Everything is pretty laid back in this park.
