‪Located in Milton, Ontario under the Halton Conservation Authority, Crawford Lake is not only for the nature enthusiast, but will be of interest to anyone that would like to explore the science, anthropological, and even indigenous civilizations side of this conservation site. The nature side of Crawford Lake is beautiful. It is filled with a number of progressively challenging trails for hiking, beautiful vistas overlooking the Halton Region, and if you are lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of the turkey vultures flying overhead by the edge of the cliffs. On the science side we have Crawford Lake itself which is very rare. It is a "Meromictic" lake - kind of like two lakes in one. Essentially, there are two very distinct layers of water that will not intermix and the bottom layer is fully oxygenated. Interestingly however is how geologists were able to use the sediment from the lake and discover the archaeological footprint of indigenous people that settled in the area, namely the Wendat or Attawandaron. Following this, the conservation site has a dedicated area displaying an indigenous settlement complete with long-houses that are free to explore. Something definitely not to be missed are the Fall colours. Crawford Lake like many of the other sites operated by the Halton Conservation Authority are great places to visit and spend time outdoors where the air is fresh and scenery is beautiful. There is a gate fee per person, or annual membership that can be purchased if you are so inclined. Reservations are recommended and can be completed online easily enough.‬

‪Very difficult to get in. Had to drive back up the road to get a signal and pay to get in.
Having eventually got in after queueing behind a car battling with the sign in procedure at the gate. we found the longhouses are only open on the weekends. Visitors centre relies on the theatre which was also closed.
Very, very disappointed ‬

‪Lovely little conservation area that is totally unprepared to repersent the start of the new epoch.
Diffucult to get into, by reservation only even though it's not a busy site. Gate house is only staffed until 4pm. After that your on your own.
I did really like the park just wouldn't give my personal data to an organization with such a crappy diffucult to mavigate website.‬

‪One of the saddest and more frustrating experiences since Covid lockdown. big brother is tracking you in conservation areas in Ontario! Communism here we come. Reservation with your data is required to get in. Bought the car pass for a year 188.00$ !! The museum in the long house was closed @4:45 pm, so was the gift shop. According to the website the park closes @7pm. The boardwalk needs repair, it is partially closed, because of rotten wood and railing. Covid quarantine madness is over! Why is reservation needed to go for a hike in nature!
People wake up and get back to work, especially the entitled, overpaid and underworked government employees!
Who is in charge of the Conservation area should get a life and actually serve the public! This is the last time I spent a dime there. Conservation areas should be for the enjoyment of all citizens and sadly it has become an outing for the privileged few.‬

‪Very nice place to enjoy nature and to have a nice stroll via wood.
You can also take your snow shoes and cross country skis to enjoy snowy trials and explore nature! Nice area for family visit.

‪Disappointingly, the people in charge have decided to install an internet driven access control system, which will keep many potential visitors away from visiting this valuable historic site. A destination which I had visited many times with visiting family and friends. So I was rather shocked when I had wanted to impress a visiting cousin and her husband last week, and learned that now an online pre-booking is required. From the signs at the gate, I assume that a license plate reader would then open the barrier, if the plate corresponds with a booking. Hello big brother! This system will definitely turn away many potential visitors, and also preclude many from learning about historic indigenous culture. The system may generate some savings in personnel costs, but I want to bet that decreasing visitor revenue will show a loss in the ledgers. My numerous rewarding previous visits have now been replaced with a bitter taste in my mouth. I have to praise the City of Toronto, where historic sites have been opened free of any charge to the general public.‬

‪Crawford Lake is always a beautiful place to visit, but it was disappointing that the longhouses were not open when we went today. There was no indication of this on the Conservation Halton website. Presumably they are open at some points during the week, because there are notices about covid-19 on the outer doors. In addition, there was no one at the gate to scan our reservation code and in fact the park was pretty deserted of staff. We weren't sure why reserving a time was necessary (especially during the week), if this is not even checked when you arrive. We won't go again until they are fully open because it was not the full experience that we were expecting.‬

‪I took my 5 1/2 year old here for a hike in July and we were blown away. It was our first and definitely not our last time.

The conservation area has many trails, a beautiful and unique lake, and best of all, it had tons of information about indigenous communities that once lived there. Seeing as we are already trying to learn more about Canada’s past and indigenous communities, this visit was amazing. There were replicas of longhouses, which very much intrigued my child. Unfortunately due to COVID stage 2 restrictions, they were closed for entry, but as stage 3 begins they will be accessible. We also visited the Three Sisters Garden. We visited that very informative area quickly as a ceremony was just about to begin there where an indigenous community was to plant in the garden.

We took a walk on the trail that borders Crawford Lake, which is entirely made up of a wooden boardwalk which, I believe is accessible to all. The lake was absolutely gorgeous. We could smell the fresh forest air and smell of cedars the entire walk.

We ran into a couple of park staff during our visit. They were hands down the most helpful and friendly park staff I have ever encountered (and I have visited many parks) The cozy little gift shop was filled with unique items. We purchased little dream catchers made by an indigenous community, and also picked up a childrens book that explains many issues going on in Canada regarding unfair treatment of indigenous communities (particularly children in this book)

Highly recommended!‬
