‪We did the 1 1/2 hour bus tour.It was a hot day, but the bus was considerable cooler than outside. The driver was a former miner himself, and he was extremely knowledgeable, had many personal stories of situations he encountered throughout his mining experiences. He also had a good sense of humor. We got off the bus twice to look at, and actually go in some of the HUGE, old equipment, and once to get a birds eye view of the previous mine / now beautiful, CLEAR, turquoise lake. We walked through the museum also, which was also interesting. We did not do the fossil part, which was a different tour.‬

‪If you ever used anything made of iron - it probably came from Minnesota! This is a guided educational bus tour of iron ore mining. Minnesota is to be congratulated for preserving this historical site for future generations - also Soudan underground Mine at Tower, Mn. (Both now inactive mines and State Parks).

There is ample parking, a small museum on mining and hands on large mining equipment used. The guide was a former miner and told first hand stories of some of the trials and tribulations of mining in past years. Most ore is now in the form of processed "Taconite pellets" while still coming from Mn open pit mines.

This tour takes about 1.5 hours and is limited to a couple a day and on Friday so check the web site under Mn DNR for schedule updates and modest fee charges. There is RV parking for the tour. Calumet is a very small historic town in what appears to be it's final days. A former Great Northern Railway history site; the depot is on the park grounds. There is also a small playground area for kids.‬

‪We took our three kids here as we continue on our quest to visit every state park in Minnesota. It appears that the state of Minnesota has completely abandoned this site. The only staff on site are the lady in the museum and the tour guide. They are only open for tours Friday and Saturday, so we arranged our trip around this. I think there are lots of politics with the state eventually planning to give the site over to a mining company again, so get there before that happens! The fossil tour before us unearthed a huge fossil in their digging. We did the mine tour, and the guide was just excellent. He was knowledgeable and exactly the right person for the job. We did not expect to learn so much about the mining process, but it was really quite interesting, and our kids thought it was great. Shame on the state for not maintaining their site, but bravo to the tiny staff for making it a great excursion anyway.‬

‪The area is beautiful. The tour guide was very friendly, knowledgeable. He worked at the mine when it was open, and had interesting stories.

We had come for the fossils though. They were disappointing. I found part of a small snail shell. The guide was helping kids to find bits of fossils so they all got something, but it just wasn't the great fossil hunt I was hoping for.

Again- the staff was wonderful. Museum was interesting. Area beautiful. Fossils were okay at best.‬

‪The tour of the Hill Annex Mine was very interesting and informative. The tour guide was a former miner, so he had many stories about the "old days". We learned a lot about the history of the mine and got to see some of the beautiful views.‬

‪My husband and I recently went on the mine tour on our way up to Scenic State Park. The tour was interesting and the guide, Lauren, a former miner, was very informative. There were some cons to this tour however:
1. The tour was on a very hot bus. Though there was supposedly air conditioning, we couldn't feel it and we were in the second row.
2. The microphone cut in and out throughout the entire tour, making it extremely difficult to hear the guide. Again, we were in the second row and we couldn't hear very well, so I can't imagine that the back of the bus heard much of the information at all.
3. Unfortunately, we had a group of very naughty children on the tour with us. This made it even harder to hear the guide and enjoy the tour. Very young children will probably not enjoy this tour.‬

‪My family took a bus tour of Hill Annex Mine & found it very interesting. It's a hour & a half long bus tour through out the abandoned mine. We had a very informative guide who at one time was a miner himself. Along the route the bus does stop & you do get to get out for a very pretty view of the mine. You also get to climb into some of the old equipment that was left there. My kids loved that part of the tour! I highly recommend taking the tour.‬

‪We stayed for 2 tours here. The first was a fossil tour -- good thing it was early, because the hill is mostly unshaded. Don't expect to come home with perfect fossils, and do come prepared -- a shovel, bucket, and screen would have been an enormous help, not to mention bug spray and sunscreen. The guide was knowlegeable and everyone eventually found something -- mostly fossilized snail shells, and one tooth that may have come from a crocodile. Oh, and you will get dirty, because you're sitting on a steep hill in rusty dirt. Probably the best time is to come after a rain.

The mine tour was less hands on and more informational, but the guide (same guy) was quite interesting -- he worked in the mines for at least 10 years and had lots of harrowing stories to relate. There is also a spot where you can climb some really tall equipment if you are fast enough!‬
