We rode this trail from Hwy 61 (just west of Red Wing) to the river access on Sunset Trail (just east of Cannon Falls) as one leg of a day of kayaking down the river and biking back up it. The trail was in excellent condition and was a fast fun ride. I wish we had paved trails like this near where I live. I would definitely use this on a regular basis if I lived nearby.

One of my favorite trails. This is a fully paved mostly flat trail from Cannon Falls to Red Wing. There is a small fee for riding/skating, but it is worth it and it helps to maintain this beautiful trail. This trail has some of the nicest rest stops you will find with picnic tables and benches. The trail is very scenic, winding along the Cannon River. It is not uncommon to see deer, squirrels, fox, chipmunks, and numerous types of birds.

The bike trail is paved and very nice. The section from Welch to Redwing is not as exciting and we would skip that section next time. Welch has a very nice area with tables to sit and relax and there are bathrooms. The Redwing trailhead area had virtually nothing. There is a cost to ride the trail.

This is always a well maintained trail, no debris on the trail and the blacktop is kept up well. You can never get rid of bumps - but they do a great job. We have been riding more of the Welch to Cannon Falls section as we are casual riders and not in the best of shape. This seems to be a slight uphill grade on the way to Cannon Falls and a pretty nice "coast" back. About 20 miles round trip, depending on time checking out Cannon Falls. Also, lots of the trail is shaded, which helps on hot days. The Welch Station is a great stop for a picnic at the end of the ride. Very clean facilities. Highly recommended as day trip out of the Twin Cities.

One of the best biking trails in Minnesota and not too far from the Twin Cities. I like to park at the midway point in Welch and bike out and back to either Cannon Falls or Red Wing. This makes for an 18-20 mile round trip. I think the stretch between Welch and Cannon Falls is the more scenic of the two but the ride to Red Wing is nice as well. $5 trail pass for the day but the trail is well maintained. I would recommend a short ride into Welch Village after your day biking for some ice cream or a beer.

It's always a good trip to ride on the Cannon Valley Trail. We enjoy biking there and recommend it to others. It's scenic and nicely paved.

Gentle, paved, flat and smooth, trail for biking, walking, running and possibly cross country skiing. Mostly covered by tree canopies so ample shade in summer. Great for those on bikes. As pedestrian hikers we found it boring. There is nothing interesting to view, no unusual birds, flora or fauna in July. You can see the river/stream occasionally from the trail but not consistently. The falls themselves are very small and are not directly connected to the trail. There is a $5 fee per bike. A bench here an there along the trail (1-2 miles) to rest. One portable toilet at beginning of the trail. We could have walked the distance around many of the local lakes and parks!

The Cannon Valley Trail was on my to-see list for years. Now that I've ridden it I'm eager to return! The trail is so scenic and we saw lots of wildlife. The flat, smooth pavement made for an easy ride. And the ample rest stations with lovely seating areas and amenities made us want to linger.
The trail attendant in Welch this morning was so friendly, so helpful, and a wealth of knowledge. We all loved chatting with him and learned a lot about the trail history. On his glowing recommendation we had lunch at Bleu Dog in Welch and it was absolutely delicious.
Our group agreed that the entire trail is great, but that the Cannon Falls-Welch section was most scenic. If you don't want to ride the entire trail, start at any access point in that half and you'll be happy. The last two miles or so into Red Wing were the most developed and least scenic (from the end of the trail it's another 1.8 miles into downtown Red Wing; we didn't ride that part).

Accessed in Cannon Falls, the Cannon Valley trail is very scenic, with lots of shady areas along the river.
We went early (on the trail by 9:30am). So, not crowded. Trail is mostly level, with only a few minor grades. Mile markers and rest stops. A great fun and safe outing. A $5 trail pass is required. Can purchase there, or in advance on line.

This is a very nice bike trail. Paved and flat. Costs $5 per day. Access on either end - Cannon Falls or Red Wing - or in the middle at Welch.

This is my first encounter with a pet ban on a bike trail. Does anyone know the reason for this?

They won't even allow pets in baskets or trailers with bikers! Totally uncalled for and ridiculous.

My husband and I are interested in traveling the entire distance but only one way starting at Cannon Falls. Are shuttle services available through the week? We would probably be doing this on a Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning in early October weather permitting.

There is no shuttle service typically during the week. If you take 2 cars, you can park one at the end and load the bikes up once you are done. That would likely be the easiest.

We would like to do 1/2 of the trial and then ride back the same part of the trial. Which part should we absolutely not miss?

Cannon Falls, Minnesota
The Cannon Valley Trail offers spectacular and diverse scenery for the entire 20 miles, however having said that, if you are looking for scenic vistas that include the Cannon River and the bluffs along it, then the 10 mile section of trail between Cannon Falls and Welch is a suggestion. If you are looking to experience the river bottoms, including the Cannon River and wetlands, then the 10 mile section of the trail between Welch and Red Wing is a suggestion. The entire Trail is scenic and picturesque!

What part of it is good for a hike?
CVTrail
Cannon Falls, Minnesota
The entire Cannon Valley Trail is open for hiking, but if you want to get off the beaten path there are a few different options.
• Mile 3.8 (Anderson Memorial Rest Area), there is a ½ mile mowed grass trail.
The rest of the suggestions listed below do not have maintained trails, but you are more than welcome to hike around.
• Mile 4.5 is the Tangential Wildlife Management Area.
• Mile 6 is the River Terrace Prairie Scientific and Natural Area.
• At Miles 12-13 and Mile 15 is the Cannon River Turtle Preserve Scientific and Natural Area.
• At Mile 17.5 is the Silvernale Archaeology Preserve.
Happy Hiking!

How long does it take to complete this trail, all 38 miles? leisurely pace.
CVTrail
Cannon Falls, Minnesota
An average person bikes about 10 miles an hour, so it will take about 4 hours. However, there are many interesting things to see along the Cannon Valley Trail so you might want to add a couple hours onto your trip!
