This church is the northernmost place of worship in the Scottish mainland. As was the situation with other churches in Scotland, this church was once a Roman Catholic Church. When the Reformation came to Scotland in 1560, the church made quite a sweeping change by adopting Presbyterianism. (Officially, it is known as the Church of Scotland.) There is a small graveyard, and a granite obelisk outside. The obelisk was erected to honor James Trail Calder the teacher of Canisbay’s first school. There is a beautiful Baptismal font that was originally in a church in Glasgow. In the vestibule, you will see a stone marking the burial place of John O’Groats. The interior of the church is quite plain and has rich-colored pews and a pulpit. There are two lofts. Our guide said this is the church the Queen Mother attended when she stayed at the Castle of Mey. A plaque on the wall marks the place where she sat during the service. To the right of the entrance, a small tapestry of the Last Supper can be found and a small organ is tucked away in the corner.

The Canisbay Church or Kirk (Church of Scotland) as it is called by locals was attended by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother when she stayed at her Castle of Mey, and now by Prince Charles during his stays here. It is only 3 miles along from John o'Groats on the A836 main road to the west before Gills Bay Ferry Terminal. It it very ancient and dates back perhaps to the 500s as old ruins of that chapel were found during the rebuild in the 1600s when the Mowats of Freswick were the patrons. The kirk is cross shaped, and inside is a plaque Charles erected in memory of his grannie. The large sandstone off the grave of Jan de Groot (aka John o'Groats) stands in the vestibule now away from the elements. There are Sinclair graves on one corner and on the other a memorial for Rev Roderick MacGregor father of the Doctors Macgregor who lived in the village late 1800-early 1900s. I live here so happy to answer questions regarding this or other sites in the vicinity.

This is a continuation of the Royal theme and link with the Castle of Mey.
HRH The Queen Mother attended church here whenever she was in residence at the castle. The Duke & Duchess of Rothesay (Charles & Camilla) now visit when they are in the area.
Photographs of their visits over the years are on display.
It is a simple church, but a fascinating L-R layout across what you would normally expect to be the nave. Lovely balconies at either end too. The capacity of the building is optimised in this layout, could probably seat c.150+
Further interest is in the graveyard, with the Sinclair family tombs (the builders of the Castle of Mey.
Opening is limited to April to October
