The locks here are now closed, but you can still walk along the walkways above them, and see nice views of St. Anthony Falls (which the locks bypassed). The area is owned by the National Park Service, and there was a ranger available near the parking area who could answer our questions and tell us a little more about the history. I think they also do tours at various times, but we just explored on our own. It's impressive how far below where you're standing the water level is in the lock areas, and gives you some idea of the volume of water that was needed to run them. We also liked the pretty closeup views we got of the falls. Overall we spent about 20 minutes walking around and seeing the sights, a little more time would have been easy to use in walking further out onto the nearby Stone Arch bridge and learning more from the friendly ranger.

Run by the Park Service, the locks are a fascination piece of history. Closed many years ago, the rangers will tell you all about the locks, their importance, and their maintenance.

The gentleman who spoke to us at the visitor's center was terrific. There were no tours scheduled when we were there, but he happily told us about the history of the area, the dam, and the falls. There are good views from the control tower. Then we were able to walk along the side of the River to a small parking area.

Seeing the only waterfall on the Mississippi River is a real treat - especially when a local tells you you're lucky - it's never like this in autumn! She was referring to the recent inordinate amount of rainfall making the river run powerful and high. It was a gorgeous Sunday to walk and view the roaring river with a rainbow bonus!

We walked over to see the Lock and Dam after visiting the Mill City Museum. It's worth walking over to see it - pretty impressive.

Very friendly and outgoing park rangers who take their time to explain the history, purpose and city to visitors. Went out of their way to give suggestions and very helpful to travelers who didn’t really know much about the area. Nice stop while visiting the parks and city.

We drove to the downtown area of Minneapolis to visit the Upper St Anthony Lock and Dam. The whole area was very interesting including the locks, stone bridge, the falls, and the adjacent old mill area. Park right off the parkway and hike down to the visitor center. In the back of the visitor center - take the elevator to the top level for great views of the river area. If you have time - hike out along the stone bridge for more great views of the area. I was amazed at how narrow the locks are ! All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. FYI - there are tours available of the lock and dam at several times during the day. We did not take the tour since the top level of the visitor center offered all the views we wanted.

I definitely recommend taking one of the daily National Park Service tours available at Upper St. Anthony Lock and Dam if you're visiting the Twin Cities. The tour is free, and you'll have access to some really good views of St. Anthony Falls and the historic Stone Arch Bridge from the top of the locks.
Although the locks aren't currently in use (closed for the time being by Congressional Order), the ranger still provided some interesting information about the history of both the dam and locks.

Of course you're not going make a trip to specifically see this attraction, but it's a must stop if you're visiting the Mill Museum or walking the arch bridge. They've got some nice views and good perspective on this history of how & why this area developed. Maybe a 20-30 minute visit but it's free and the staff is friendly. Why not take a look?

The folks at the Upper St Anthony Lock and Dam are very knowledgeable about the lock and dam system. The upper lock is closed by congressional decree because of low demand and as a defense from the Asian carp.
