If you have traveled from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota, to cities in Iowa, Illinois, or Missouri, you probably try to stick to the interstate highways. If you are looking for an alternative to actually see something as well as travel some of the most beautiful and historic land in the United States, consider driving The Great River Road which goes from Northern Minnesota all the way to New Orleans. The National Eagle Center is located about an hour and a half southeast of the Twin Cities on The Great River Road (U S Highway 61) and is a fascinating interpretive center with live bald eagles as well as unparalleled views of eagle fishing areas on the Mississippi. You will get unbelievably close to the eagles within the center while the docents answer your questions and explore the asocial lives of eagles as they live in the wild. Currently, there are four eagles at the center although funding has been allocated for an additional three to bring the total to seven. We were very impressed with the knowledge base of the staff as we are followers of these majestic creatures across Minnesota and the Upper Mississippi River Basin. The gift shop has lots of whimsical swag for the kids as well as adults. This is one of those places that you could accomplish in 45 minutes or spend several hours here. Of note, the homes where the movie “Grumpy Old Men” was filmed are a short distance from here. Take the road-less-traveled, especially if you are into bridges, lock & dams, barges, and trains.

We made this our first stop while on a trip down the river road from the Twin Cities. Great location right on the river and a fun place to spend an hour or two. The outdoor program was above expectations—-informative, engaging, funny, and gorgeous views. Lots of educational displays and interactive opportunities in the center. The prices seemed a little steep for overall value, but they are a non-profit working toward a good cause.

My love for eagles prompted us to experience the eagle center. The cost for adults is $12, plus $3 admission for the live eagle demonstration. The demonstration has limited spots, so it's best to book the demonstration when buying the admission ticket. We bought our tickets online, but walk-ins are welcome. The live eagles and one hawk are birds that were injured and are unable to return to the wild. They have become the ambassadors of the center and outreach programs. The center has many exhibits of raptors and some interactive activities. There are 2 eagles that are in a viewing area to have a close look to watch their interactions with people and eagles they view from the outside window. The primary focus of this center is during the winter month; hundreds of eagles congregate along Lake Pepin in Wabasha, MN. The water stays open year-round because the lake narrows which increases the current as well as other rivers that connect to the lake keeping the waters moving. The center is great, but the highlight would seeing a large number of eagles. Our experience was not that, because just previous to our visit, there was a huge snowstorm which caused most of the birds to go South. They will come back over time. The centers website posts on Friday's the eagle count. This might help with planning your trip for optimal viewing.

Hello roomchecker,
Thank you for visiting the eagle and sharing such a detailed review. WOW! It sounds like you definitely took in the entire experience and spoke at length with our educators which is excellent! We so appreciate you taking a few minutes to share your experience and provide some pointers to other potential visitors and guests. Again, thank you for visiting and your support, and we hope to be able to host you again sometime in the future. Until next time!

This was a big disappointment and really not sure how it can call itself the ‘National’ Eagle Center, when it has just two eagles (one less than on its website) and they’re both completely immobile.
One had an eye missing and the other was asleep the whole time we were there.
More space was given to a collection of stuff to do with eagles, amassed by a rich guy from California. All quite interesting but not really the point of visiting an Eagle Center.
There were a few interactive things for kids.
We were there for not much more than half an hour and glad that we were passing and hadn’t gone out of our way to visit.

Hi Foodange,
We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your visit, but we do appreciate your feedback. We can assure that we are home to four Bald Eagles, but they are all permanently injured and unable to be released back into the wild. In fact, that is the only reason we are able to be their caretakers. Not all the ambassadors are on display at any given time as we also do traveling outreach with them at schools, events, etc. As for the Preston Cook Collection and gallery spaces, the Center is expanding our educational focus beyond just the natural bird to share and explore the role eagles play in arts, history, cultures, government, pop culture, etc.
Again, thank you for visiting and sharing your review. We do appreciate it. Be well!

After taking an eagle tour, we drove to the Eagle Center. They have some eagles that you can see up close. They are injured and cannot live in the wild. There is a very nice collection of eagle memorabilia and informative displays about different types of eagles.

The program with the liv eagle was excellent. Don't miss it! It costs the admission + $3 and is well worth every penny. Also visit the eagles on display and visit with the naturalist handler. The displays are very well done and interesting.

I loved everything about the cruise, including the staff, the educational part, being on the boat, etc. All very good. We saw over 40 eagles and it was amazing. I have to rate the overall experience a 3 due to the ramp to get on and off the boat. I brought my parents who are elderly. The ramp to enter and exit is TREACHEROUS. Its incredibly steep, one slight trip and you are cascading down the slope and into the river. I wish I would have taken a pic because it was beyond scary, even for me. My mother expressed her concerns and received the following response, "We are sorry you had issues with the ramp. The ramp is not a handicap ramp. It’s the ramp that everyone uses. In no way is it or has it ever been referred to as a handicap ramp, it was not created to be a handicap ramp. As the water level gets lower we have to make adjustments to the ramp which makes it steeper.". There was one gentleman on the boat who required a wheelchair to move around and he had to abandon his own electric wheelchair and use the manual one provided. The ramp was so narrow, there were staff people on the OUTSIDE of the ramp working to get him to the top without harm. This is not a safe experience for anyone. This really needs to be addressed or you need to indicate on your website that those with difficulty getting up and down a very steep ramp should not attend. I hope you will address this issue and enable seeing our majestic American symbol more accessible to all. Once you were on the boat, it was amazing.

LMSSports,
Thank you for attending our Lake Pepin eagle viewing cruise. We're glad you had an enjoyable experience! Thank you also for the honest feedback concerning the venue. We take this very seriously and are examining ways to work with the cruise operator to improve this aspect of the cruise experience. We share your concern and want all of our guests to have access and feel secure. Again, thank you and we hope to be able to host you again at a future National Eagle Center event. Be well!

Really enjoyed the eagle program presented by Connor with Latsch. He was very knowledgeable, humorous and informative. Every question asked by the audience was answered. We learned a great deal. Were a bit disappointed that due to construction, we weren't able to see more eagles. Two were in one glassed in room and the young lady also was very informative telling about how Columbia and Wak'asa were brought to the center. We had no idea how fragile eagles were. A very informative experience in a lovely setting along the Mississippi River.

Hi CatStratz,
Thank you so much for your visit and review! We greatly appreciate it and are so happy to hear that you enjoyed a fun and educational visit to the eagles. We certainly understand that the construction causes some headaches, but thankfully that is only temporary. Pro tip - if you are able, you'll want to take a drive along the Upper Mississippi River during the winter when wild eagle viewing is at its peak. Think December thru March. We have more Bald Eagles in the region in the winter and the bare trees make seeing them much easier. Again, thank you for your support and we hope to see you again on a future visit. Be well! :-)

Average trip. We arrived at approximately 12:45 pm and made our way inside the main building to buy tickets. We bought regular admission tickets, along with tickets to see the live eagle presentation, which was only an additional 3 dollars. The live eagle presentation was excellent. It lasted for approximately 50 minutes, and the presenter was extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the topic at hand. The presenter went over the main features of an eagle, and gave us interesting fun facts about their eyesight, beaks, and talons. Midway through the presentation was was an interactive activity geared towards the children in the room. Towards the end, the employee brought out an eagle and opened the room up to any questions that the audience may have. The museum itself in the main building, was a disappointment. There were only a few informational plaques and artifacts, scattered throughout the museum, that provided additional information on the eagle. There was also an employee in a separate room who had two eagles with him, available to answer any questions that we may have. The upstairs of the museum was a continuation of the first floor, and contained more informational plaques, along with many Native American artifacts. I would have loved to see more informational plaques that focused on the eagle, as I am sure there was a lot more to learn about the majestic animal. There was also an observation deck on the second floor, that allowed one to view the wildlife around them. There was a decent amount of construction work going on in the area, so as a result, part of the sidewalk was blocked off and we had to park a block away.
Tip: I recommend spending 3 hours here if you truly want to see everything.

Thank you for you very thorough review. We greatly appreciate it! So happy you were able to attend the eagle program and experience that fan-favorite presentation. We're sorry to hear that you found the exhibit spaces underwhelming. The National Eagle Center's focus is expanding to encompass more about eagles than just the biological and behavioral elements, but visitor feedback is important to us and we continue to development and fine-tune that visitor experience.
Again, thank you for visiting and especially for taking the time to share such a comprehensive review. We appreciate your support. Be well!

Are you able to hold an Eagle?
NationalEagleCenter
Wabasha, Minnesota
Paul H,
Thank you for the question! No - visitors are not able to hold any of the eagles. However, as others have noted, you are able to get very close (within 4-5 feet) of the eagle ambassadors on display. As for photos, you can take as many photos as you like in the display area and can certainly get photos with the eagles in the background, though we do not offer any arranged photos with an eagle.

We were thinking of driving down this coming weekend but wondering if it is better to wait until winter for better viewing?
NationalEagleCenter
Wabasha, Minnesota
goodiowagirl - Winter is the best time of year for eagle viewing due to the congregation of migratory eagles along the river and the lack of leaves on the trees. That said, we do see eagles every day in Wabasha and you can meet our resident eagle ambassadors at the National Eagle Center every day.No good reason not to come as there is still plenty to do and see. :-)

We're going to arrive right around 11, in time for the info session, and I was wondering if we can bring a picnic lunch to eat on site or does anyone have a good recommendation for a nearby place with a picnic table? Also, can we leave and re-enter the facility? Thanks! We're looking forward to our visit.

Hello,
Yes - there are a couple of picnic tables outside of the National Eagle Center along the river front walking/biking path. They are public picnic tables.
How long would you allow to visit? A couple hours, half day, or full day?

My daughter and I are planning a trip to the area within the next couple of months. We want to visit you and also try to get some good eagle pics in the wild while they are wintering in the area. Her spring break is late March and with the winter we are having I am afraid that many of the wintering eagles may have already headed out by then? Can you offer any perspective based on historical data?

We were just along the river the weekend before last, and saw 14 eagles- some in trees, some in flight, and a few fishing on the open water, standing at the edge of the ice.
