‪The Lyceum and the Circle Historic District is a historic area on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, Mississippi that includes eight buildings and several monuments and was significant for its association with the civil rights movement during the Ole Miss riot of 1962 which resulted in the enrollment of James Meredith as the school's first African-American student. The Circle was designated as a National Historic Landmark and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The centerpiece of the Circle is the Lyceum, the university's administration building which was built in 1848 and is the only surviving original structure on the campus. In 1962, the confrontation between Federal troops and white students and outside segregationists took place in front of the Lyceum. Other buildings are Brevard Hall, Croft Institute for International Studies and Carrier, Shoemaker, Ventress, Bryant and Peabody dormitory halls. The Circle is surrounded by University Circle, a road designed for one-way traffic that is lined by oak and magnolia trees, beds of pansies and expanses of grass. Since the mid-19th century, the Circle has been the focal point and historic core of the Ole Miss campus. Brevard Hall, the old chemistry building, was built in 1923. Two-story Ventress Hall was built in 1889. Bryant Hall, which housed the university's library from 1911 to 1952, now is home to the Fine Arts Center and the departments of Philosophy, Religion and Classics.‬

‪Interesting both for its architecture and what it represents.
On one hand, the building and its 6 columns are such a dominant part of the campus; on the other hand, being both a pre Civil War construction and the site of the 1962 riots makes it a very important symbol of the civil rights era.‬

‪My daughter is a freshman at the University of Mississippi, so this fall I have made a few trips to Oxford and this is at the center of the academic campus. The Lyceum and other buildings like Ventress Hall are 19th century buildings that provide character to the Circle.‬

‪The Lyceum and University Circle Historic District at the University of Mississippi in Oxford includes eight buildings and several monuments that form the centerpiece of the campus and were significant for their association with the Civil Rights Movement during the violent Ole Miss riot of 1862, which followed the enrollment of African-American military veteran James Meredith. The violence required the intervention of Federal troops to protect the safety of citizens. The focal point of The Circle is the Lyceum, with its grand facade of six tall columns, which was built in 1848 and is the oldest building on the campus. Once the only academic structure at Ole Miss, it is now used for the university's administration offices. The Circle also includes a metal flagpole in the center of the green that dates to 1962, Brevard Hall, Carrier Hall, Shoemaker Hall, Ventress Hall, Bryant Hall, Peabody Hall, Y Building and a Confederate Monument that dates to 1906. The Lyceum and the Circle were added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2008.‬

‪This is the icon that represents Ole Miss. Oldest building on campus. It was present pre Civil War and witnessed everything from the University Grey's leaving for battle to James Meredith's fight to enroll at Ole miss 100 years later. Beautiful landscaping and filled with tailgaters on football weekends in the Autumn. Lovely place‬

‪Fabulous view after the sun sets and darkness slowly creeps up on you. The lighting for the Lyceum really makes the viewing of this historical site amazing.‬

‪I visited Ole Miss and the Lyceum specifically to see the statue of James Merideth, the first black student to be admitted to the university. The statue shows Mr. Merideth striding confidently toward the building, which was the site of the first classes he took when, following rioting, violence, and destruction by angry mobs, he was finally able to attend school.

The statue and monument near it include quotes from Mr. Meredith and Myrlie Evers Williams, widow of slain NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers, among others.‬
